TANDBERG philosophy for DSNG
Confidential | www.tandbergtv.com
TANDBERG DSNG design principles
• All models based upon our standard broadcast MPEG-2 encoder platform
• Same core software for all products
• Same core hardware platform for all products
• Using common hardware and software provides greater reliability and easier
maintainance than a multiple-product portfolio with many hardware and software
varients
• One software version across the range recognises the option cards in the chassis and
presents the appropriate options and menus.
• This approach provides the customer with almost infinite upgradeability as well as
a very long product lifespan.

E5710 / E5720 MPEG-2 SD Encoder

E5714 notes:
• IF model uses a single card-slot modulator leaving one option slot free for extra
audio or REMUX
• This IF version cannot do DVB-S2 and only supports DVB-S QPSK
• L-band version uses full, 2-slot card. It is DVB-S2 capable as standard
• L-band version has no free option slots and so cannot have any other option cards
• If you only have 1RU of rack space, the E5714 is great but for the larger display
and host of possible upgrade options the 2U E5740 is often the best choice

E5720 base encoder…. the starting point for all
TANDBERG 2U DSNG
The base 2U encoder (E5720) has 6 free option slots. An E5740 DSNG will have a
satellite modulator fitted as standard in slots 2 and 3. Other cards can be chosen but
many need to fit into specific option slots. You can choose from the following common
options to create the ideal product for you. Only the most common options have been
listed;
In development:
•New option to support very high bitrate point to point terrestrial links using DVB-S2 for
ultra high quality HD contribution

MPEG-4 HD:The easy way to save up to
55% bandwidth
•For HD, the benefits of h.264 are still at the
lower bitrates.
•Many broadcasters are struggling with low-
bitrate MPEG-2 HD, which means 16 –
20Mb/sec for contribution
•MPEG-4 can help cut this by up to 55%
making 1080i look good at say 10Mb/sec.
•EN8040 combines the benefits of h.264 HD
compression with DVB-S2 for maximum
efficiency.
•Saves transponder cost and the need to
upgrade other very expensive equipment in the
truck (HPA’s, power supplies, dish antenna
etc.)

Introducing ICE3 Ultracompression
• Evolution of Intelligent Compression Engine family
– Same form factor enables upgradeability
• Upgrade option to 20,000 E57xx and E59xx encoders deployed in field.
Chargeable option
• Module upgrade for existing iPlex & MediaPlex customers
• [Competition lacks upgradeability]
– Same chassis and motherboard
• Control, system wiring, audio, muxing, encapsulation etc unchanged
– proven technology and implementation = LOW RISK for customers
– Continuation of system and STB interoperability engineered into existing
products
• Lower risk for customers to deploy with TANDBERG rather than with
competitors new first generation products which are unproven

Introducing ICE3 Ultracompression
• Common platform for SD and HD
• Upgrade in future from SD to HD with no hardware change on EN8000
• SD / HD switchable operation from same hardware on EN8000
• Will become standard offer in 2007 (EN80xx range) for continuing development
• Provides MPEG-4 AVC SD Ultra compression and HD compression solutions for
Plex products

AVC and latency
• Broadcasters often see AVC working with many seconds of encode / decode
latency
• This has made it impossible to use H.264 for contribution
• TANDBERG has engineered a solution and has new low latency modes in the
encoder and RX1290 decoder
• This should achieve a useable latency of 0.55s (encode / decode) with many of the
H.264 encoding efficiency benefits still in place.
• Delay same for HD and SD modes.
• For example, good quality HD contribution at 10 to 12Mb/s is possible with 0.55s
delay!

DVB-S2 – A new MODULATION technology

DVB-S2 The easy way to save 35%
bandwidth
• Only E5714IF and E5745 models
cannot support DVB-S2
• All other products built in 2006 have
the new DVB-S2 hardware as
standard.
• If a customer needs to use DVB-S2
then follow this checklist;

Questions you will be asked:
DVB-S2.
• Can I upgrade my Voyager • As long as it’s an E57 or EN59 series
product, the answer is almost always
to DVB-S2? “Yes”. First, check to see if the
modulator is DVB-S2 capable. If not, it
will need replacing at our factory. With
the correct hardware, a software
upgrade to 3.10 or later will be
required to make it work. This is free
of charge if the customer performs the
software upgrade themselves. Then,
the customer must buy the licence.
• The customer must have a DVB-S2
compatible receiver. Note that our
TT1260 / 1280 does not support
16APSK! However, this will not be
used for mobile applications.
• Older than E57xx is not possible and
the older equipment must be traded
in.
• Can I upgrade older non
E57xx equipment to DVB-
S2?
