    Seventh Grade Pre-Algebra Ms. Hamlow

    Mission Statement: Our mission at the Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership
    Development School is to create college bound students with a deep commitment to public
    service and a true understanding of their leadership skills within the global community.

    Course Overview: Pre-Algebra is a course designed to facilitate the learning of Algebra I.


    Students will develop algebraic understanding and skill using expressions and equations,
    recognize linear and non-linear patterns in graphs, develop an understanding of functions,
    analyze data with rates and ratios, increase understanding of the structure and properties
    of the systems of real numbers. Problem solving techniques for various types of real world
    and algebraic problems are developed. Equations, inequalities, graphs, polynomials, and
    slope are some of the topics that will be simply yet thoroughly treated. Discussion of a
    variety of ways to solve problems is strongly encouraged. Successful completion of this
    course is based on student organization, assignments, assessments and teacher judgment.

    Student Evaluation:
    ≈100 points Assignments– 5 points
    ≈100 points Quizzes– 5 to 30 points each quiz (announced and pop)
    ≈300-400 pts Tests- 3 to 4 each quarter, 100 points each
    ≈100 points Projects- 25-50 points each (detailed instruction and rubrics will
    be given)
    50 points Binder- neat, complete and in order
    200 points Final Exam- Accumulative for the quarter

    Grade Point Average (GPA) = Total points earned ÷ Total points possible
    Any extra credit offered will be offered to the whole class, not individually.
    Projects accepted late will receive a letter grade reduction per each day.

    Homework Policy:
    All assignments must be written neatly and in PENCIL!
    All problems must be written out and all work must be shown. In other words,
    when your parents or teachers read your work, they should be able to understand
    how you came up with the solution to the problem. Students will receive full credit
    for all problems written out and work shown, even if the problems are wrong. So
    please do your best at solving each problem! Compass Odyssey and GIZMOS will be
    assigned and counted as a homework assignment.

    Incomplete but more than ½ 3 points
    No assignment 0 points
    Using ink 0 points (if redone in pencil, 5 points)
    No written problem (answers only) 0 points

    “Late work” is not accepted. Math skills are building skills therefore it is
    imperative that assignments are completed and turned in on time.

    Make-up Work Policy: It is the STUDENTS responsibility to refer to my math blog


    for work missed when absent. Students are expected to make-up missed
    assignments and to turn in them in at the beginning of class on the day they return.
    Grades will suffer when missed assignments are not completed and submitted. It is
    THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to talk to teachers and/or classmates about
    what was missed during an absence. It is a good idea to have the name and
    telephone number of a trusted classmate to contact about missed assignments
    when absent.

    For each day absent, an equal number of days are allowed to complete make-up
    assignments. If an absence is due to planned travel, parents should notify teachers
    in writing at least two days prior to the absence to request assignments that will be
    missed.

    In case of illness lasting three or more days, assignments may be requested through
    the Guidance Office at 346-5650 ext.114. Please allow 24-hours for work to be
    compiled.

    Grade Recovery Policy: Students will be assigned Compass Odyssey for grade
    recovery as outlined in the Duval County Pupil Progression Plan found on the Duval
    County Public Schools web page.
    Parent/Teacher Conferences: Please contact guidance at 346-5650 x 114.

    Tutoring: Peer tutoring is encouraged throughout the week in class. In addition all
    students will have a 50 minute team time/resource class each day of the week. I
    will be available during this time if a student needs additional help. If a child needs
    extended tutoring time, High School students from Stanton and Paxon tutor for
    Community Service hours. Please call either school for more information. Stanton

    Grading Scale: Students will be evaluated in accordance with the standard Duval
    County Public Schools’ grading scale. Quarterly averages are computed using test
    grades, projects, homework grades and daily performance grades. Letter grades
    will be assigned based on numeric averages as indicated:

    90-100 A
    80-89 B
    70-79 C
    60-69 D
    below 60 F

    Progress Reports: In addition to report cards issued at the end of each quarter,
    students will receive progress reports on September 22 , December 3, February 24,
    and May 6. Students earning “D” or “F” on a progress report will be required to
    return the progress report signed by the parent/guardian within two days.

    information on guidance services, attendance, morning tardy policy, dress code and
    more.
