Reality shows.
Is the era of soaps and family dramas on
television coming to an end? Do people prefer a
reality show to a prolonged television drama?
Yes! The times are a-changing and the buzzword
today is reality shows. These shows are all about
formats and television programmed producers see a
huge opportunity in India for them.
So what are formats and how do they work wonders
for broadcasters? With the unprecedented success of
programmes like Kaun Banega Crorepati on Star Plus
and Indian Idol on Sony & sa re ga ma on zee TV. It
has been proven that formats are a huge success in
India.
"The best thing about a reality show is that it is real,
it is interactive: the viewers could decide who would
be the winner".
"Reality shows see the dreams of millions of Indians
come true. They relate to the characters who appear
on the shows, and this makes the shows more
meaningful than any tearjerker. The money-spinners
can be in the form of quiz shows, panel shows,
celebrity guest shows which give the
audience the power to decide the next move and
also be a part of the great show.
The concept of a format show has evolved over the
years; it varies from in different places. And yes,
formats work wonders.
"There have been shows like Khulja Sim Sim, a
remake of the American show, Let's Make A Deal.
Here the viewer could play and participate in the
show. Same with the case of Kismey Kitnaa Hain
Dum, a remake of famous British hit, Night Fever. It
featured a karaoke contest where viewers could sing
along.
"The best part about these shows is that the viewers
went through the trials and tribulations of the
participants.
The ingredients of an ideal reality show is simple, "It
must appeal to all. It is a craft, it is a drama that
unfolds in front of you," says Gavin Wood, director of
production, India Fremantle Media.
"The idea should be original and entertaining. The
best part of a reality show is that it guarantees
success and there are valuable lessons to be learnt
about viewer's tastes and preferences. The reality
shows makes sure that the dreams come true and
the risk of shattering the dreams of many

others," says Wood, who has tried and tested the

format in other Asian countries as well.
Wood says that the only thing to keep in mind is,
"The format should be tested and proven, the
content has to be localised, the format should not be
altered as small changes can bring far reaching
effects.
Indian formats have the potential to go global as the
passion and creativity in India grows in the years to
come. This will drive the growth of the television
industry in India."

Now I would like to give you the information

about popular Reality Shows.
Kaun banega crorepati
The first season of KBC had…
• 3,000 contestants
• 500 people on the hot seat
• 60,000 studio audience
• 90 million phone calls, and more than
• Rs 260 million given away as prize money
• 305 episodes
His voice booms out, "Chalo, hum khelte hain
Kaun Banega Crorepati". The camera zooms in. The
game begins. Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), the quiz
show that created history on Indian television, is
making a triumphant comeback exclusively on Star
Plus.
KBC is hosted by Bollywood’s biggest icon and ‘Man
of the Millenniums’ Amitabh Bachchan,. The big ‘B’
has proved to be an obsession with millions, and Mr.
Bachchan’s show provides audiences with an
enthralling mix of risk, nail biting tension and passion
which has inevitably captured the dreams and the
imaginations of the nation.
The show that received over 9 million calls from
aspiring participants caught the imagination of India
over 5 years ago and till date remains a jewel in
Star’s crown and the most popular quiz show in the
country.
Indian Idol.
Sony Entertainment Television is back with the
sequel to its super-successful talent hunt show.
Indian Idol 2 is all set to kick-off on November 21, to
be telecast at 8:30 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays.
As with the first season, Mini Mathur and Aman
Verma will be the hosts, and the returning panel of
judges comprises Anu Malik, Sonu Nigam and Farah
Khan.
Over a million participants registered from across the
country, and 30,000 made it to the national
auditions, held at Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and
Lucknow.
After the auditions, only 172 have made it to the
shortlist, and headed to Mumbai for the next round.
"There is a lot of talent in India. And to go through all
of them was a difficult task and I was very blunt
while selecting the candidates," Malik said on the
auditioning experience. "Therefore few people also
reacted very badly and some of them refused to
leave. But for me, either the participant is good or
bad."
When Sonu Nigam was asked how he feels with so
many talented singers entering the field, he said he
is very nervous, but he takes it positively and does
more of preparation and riyaaz.
He also added that the turnout of talent was better
this year. He was disappointed with Mumbai, but
says the response from Delhi and Kolkata was better.
He was pleasantly surprised by Lucknow, because it
brought forward a large number of very talented
female participants. "I personally felt that, last time,
girls didn't participate much because they were not
aware how serious this contest was," he said.
Sonu summed up the cities thus: "Mumbai was
careless. Lucknow was a new venue. Kolkata was full
of emotion: those who lost cried, but even those who
were taken in cried out of joy. And Delhi was full of
josh!"
Farah Khan talked about how a lot of contestants
gave away their jobs and studies just to participate in
Indian Idol.
Performing on the occasion, Indian Idol winner
Abhijeet Sawant said, "I had never dream of being so
famous, but Indian Idol changed my life totally. I was
not sure if I could be a singer, but today I am an
established singer."
He wished the Indian Idol 2 contestants all the best,
and sang an interesting variety of songs.

Nach Baliye.
10 Mashhur jodiya aur 1 anokhi jang. This show stole
hearts of quite a few of us & managed to meet
expectations. The kind of show put up was the first
time in the history of television, so it did a wonderful
job.

Concept of Nach Baliye.

10 celebrities are here to dance.

Choreographers are here to set them dance well.
Prize money is also huge as 50 lacs for the Jodi & 20
lacs to the Choreographers. Now about the judges.
There are three judges over here ---

1.Saroj Khan-
She did a wonderful job by judging the dance
performances & choreography as well. She did
admire, criticize, whistle & dance.

2.Faran Akther-
The sort of intelligent judge here is comment
were too good especially the way to did present his
comments.

3. Mallika Arora-
She is a beautiful woman. She gives a perfect
comment on each of the participants. Her way of
giving the comment was very good. Now about
the participants there are 10 celebrities as follows-

1. Sachin & Supriya

2. Poonam & Manish.
3. Varun & Rajeshwari.
4. Rajeev & Delnaaz.
5. Parmit & Archana.

There are many rounds in this show. In

every round one jodi be eliminated according to
public voting. Thus this show was the fantastic &
different type of Reality Show as compared to other
type of shows.

CONCLUSION.
While concluding , There are several reasons
that reality television has become popular today. The
three that I will focus on are the concepts of money,
i.e. the show provide us huge amount of money. The
second reason is that instant fame, i.e. when you
participate in any programme then you get instant
fame or popularity and The third reason is that guilty
pleasure phenomenon. The show like sa re ga ma pa
provides a huge platform for singer. The show like
Kaun Banega Crorepati improved the general
knowledge of the people. Reality shows are
interactive i.e. any lay man can participate in the
programme & viewers also get the chance that they
can actively participate in the show, by giving there
votes to there favorite contestants but there are also
some disadvantages that non deserving person get
more votes than deserving person due to some other
reasons & people like us wasted our money by
sending them thousands of SMS.
Thus there are some advantages &
disadvantages in case of Reality Shows. But we have
to consider only positive points like hardwork,
patience of the contestants & enjoy the show like a
entertaining programme.
