MARIE Curie Cancer Care provides free hands-on nursing care for people with all terminal illnesses either in their own home or in one of the charitys nine hospices. Marie Curie is best known for its network of more than 2,000 Marie Curie nurses, who provide care to patients across the UK, as well as emotional support for their families. The charity provided care to more than 38,000 people with terminal illnesses, and is the largest provider of hospice beds outside the NHS. Marie Curie has began a Great Daffodil Appeal this month. The appeal kicked off across the country on March 1. Volunteer collectors will be out in force throughout the month of March encouraging everyone to give a donation and wear one of the charitys daffodil pins. All the funds raised by the appeal will help Marie Curie nurses provide more care for
people with terminal illnesses, at the time when they need the most support. Since the first Great Daffodil Appeal took place in 1986, more than 70 million has been raised to fund the charitys work. The Great Daffodil Appeal doesnt just raise funds; it raises awareness of Marie Curie services and the need for high quality nursing care for people with terminal illnesses. Marie Curie wants people wherever they live to be able to have a peaceful death, provided with the care they want and need, with support available for them and their families. Research shows that 63 per cent of people want to be cared for and die at home, yet only 44 per cent, including those in care homes, do. This is because not enough or the right type of health and social care is available. Marie Curie enables more people to be cared for and die in the place of their choice,
surrounded by the people and things they love, and campaigns to ensure that those who are terminally ill have faster access to free social care. As people live longer, increasing numbers of people have long-term conditions requiring more complex support towards the final stages of life. Despite this, end-of-life care is an under-researched subject. Marie Curie invests in high quality research to provide real benefits to people with terminal illnesses, their carers and families. Marie Curie is the only charity exclusively funding end-oflife care research and invests around 3 million per year in research. The charity is asking people to support the Great Daffodil Appeal, and help it give people with terminal illnesses the care they need and at the end of their lives.
