oanne Geldart is 14 years old and lives in County Durham, in the north of England. Like many other
schoolchildren in Britain she is the victim of bullying. For years, other children have called her names,
kicked her and punched her because she is tall and overweight, and because of her white hair. The bullying
started so long ago that Joanne cant remember when she could walk along a street without kids calling her
names. The problem was so bad that Joanne even thought about killing herself.
But in the end Joanne decided to take action of a different sort. She began to write a diary of her
experiences, which she sent to a newspaper. She wrote a letter to the Prime Minister, saying You say that
you are doing lots of things for education. But children who are bullied cant do their schoolwork and do
badly in exams. The Prime Minister agreed to meet her, and she went to see him in London with her
mother and head teacher. They talked for half an hour. Joanne wants the government to appoint a
childrens commissioner someone who can listen to the victims of bullies and do something about the
problem. The Prime Minister has promised to help.

In the 1970s Uri Geller was famous all over the world for bending spoons! It isnt difficult to bend
spoons if you are strong, but Uri had a different technique he could bend spoons just by thinking about
them!
He developed this special skill after a strange experience when he was only four years old. He was playing
in a neighbours garden when he saw a strange bright light. Not long after this experience a spoon bent in
his hand and broke when he was having dinner. His parents were very surprised, but Uri didnt speak about
it to his friends.
However, as he grew older, he found that he could bend metal objects like knives and forks just by
touching them, and thinking hard. Scientists became very interested in Uri. They examined him and did
lots of experiments on him. They found that he could do many strange things, like reading other peoples
thoughts (telepathy), repairing broken clocks and watches, making plants grow a few centimetres in just
seconds and making computers crash all by the power of thought.
Uri Geller became famous and appeared on television, bending spoons in front of the television cameras.
Some people didnt believe their eyes. They thought that what Uri did was impossible but at the same time
they thought that it really happened.
Today Uri Geller has his own website. You can find out more about him at www.uri-geller.com
