    Rough Drafts will be due A Day, April 15/16 YOU NEED TO TURN IN TWO ROUGH DRAFTS, ONE FOR ME, ONE FOR THE PEER REVIEW. IF YOU DO NOT BRING IN TWO DRAFTS, THEN THE DRAFT YOU BRING IN WILL BE USED FOR THE PEER REVIEW AND WILL NOT RECEIVE COMMENTS FROM ME. Drafts turned in late will not be looked at for

    comments, so take care of business and get them in. Final Drafts are due Monday April 21

    Resume Layout Tips


    Your resume should have substantial blocks of white,

    or, negative space. Negative space does not imply that you have nothing to write about. Rather, it should be used to highlight the positive space (the words) Each listing (category title, job title, dates, bullet points) should be vertically aligned to match the corresponding listing, e.g. you should be able to draw a straight line through the first letter of each category title (see the two resumes you picked up).

    Resume Layout
    We are going to examine the resumes from the blue

    packet. You will view each resume for 30 seconds. Afterward, you will have one minute to answer the prompts below. Answer each question in your notebook. Do not review the resume as you answer the questions.

    What categories did the author use? List the skills the author wrote about? What skills match the objective? Choose one highlight of the resume and explain why you chose it.

    Resume Layout
    Take 3 minutes to discuss with your partner which

    resume was laid out better. Be able to explain your opinion.

    Topics to be aware of:


    Does the authors name stand out? How the author uses negative space Do the skills and achievements match the objective? Which font type is better? Why? Is the writing parallel? Is there vertical and horizontal symmetry between the different elements (category title; dates; bullets)?

    Key Words
    Identifying key words, and then using them in your

    resume, is an important step to getting noticed. With the possibility for thousands of applications, companies need to streamline the hiring process. They do this with, what else, software. Specifically, software systems that identify the specified keywords. Key words are going to be

    Action verbs (organize, implement, strategize) Specific, job related nouns (cross-departmental, interior design) Adjectives and adverbs that correspond with the above nouns and verbs (tenacious, seasoned, professional, cooperative, creative)

    How to look for Key Words


    a. Make a master list of keywords that appear in the job description listed by the employer. b. Search the web, looking for that job. Pay attention to the words that pop up a lot. c. Go to Web sites that represent companies and associations related to the candidate's target job and industry. Look for key words in the home pages and mission statements of the companies. d. Cull keywords from specific job descriptions for which the candidate is applying. e. Search LinkedIn profiles of users who have similar jobs to see what keywords they're using. f. Go to association Web sites if there's a "find a member" directory; see what keywords other industry professionals have used.

    far. Were moving fast.

    Rate yourself, 4-1, on how well you understand the

    following statements.

    I understand the important elements of Resume Layout. I can work by myself and accurately and effectively search for keywords in a job posting.

    If you are anything less than a 4 for either of the

    statements, then brainstorm about how you could enhance your knowledge. Hint: ask questions.

    Spend the next five minutes reading through the next slide. In your notebook, create a list of keywords that you could use to write an application/resume.
