Whats the story?
This is the only ocial game based on the iconic American series, Prison Break.
Its being worked on by the relatively unknown ZootFly, who some of you may
remember got busted in 2007 for making a Ghostbusters prototype without
permission from Sony. Not any such problem like that here though, as Fox happily
gave the go-ahead for this title months ago and its shaping up rather well. Its the
kind of traditional stealth game you remember playing years ago, yet it feels
refreshingly dierent to the usual third-
person action adventure. This promises to
be one of the few TV-to-game adaptations
which is enjoyable to play.
What do we know?
ZootFly have paid careful attention to
emulate as much as they can from the
excellent source material. All the stars from
the show have been painstakingly
recreated and look absolutely brilliant. The
games plot has also been penned by one
of the series scriptwriters, so this will be an
immersive and authentic Prison Break
experience. You play as Max Paxton, an
undercover agent for a mysterious
organisation known only as the Company.
Youve been sent into Fox River Penitentiary
to investigate Michael Scoeld and ensure
that his brothers execution continues as
planned without any hitches.
Anyone aware of the series will relish
seeing key plot points play out in front
of them from a drastically dierent

perspective. If you arent a fan of the franchise then you really dont
have to worry, as the game never shows you anything without an
explanation in due course.
As youd expect, due to the protagonists military background he
has excellent close combat skills and most of the games ghts will
only involve using what god gave you. You can punch, kick and
block foes before unleashing bone-breaking nishers when their
health is diminished.
It sounds rather restrictive but adhering to the source material
makes ghts feel extremely earthy, raw and realistic. Speaking of
raw, youll have to negotiate with some of the most vile and
despicable game characters weve seen for a very long time
including white supremacists and other thoroughly vicious inmates.
Arkham Asylum has nothing on these lot.
Due to the games linear plot, most of your time will be spent
running errands for key characters, which
will involve spying on certain targets and
stealing weapons. As a result, knowing
how to avoid guard patrols and disabling
CCTV cameras is key. Exploration is also a
factor, as the protagonist is able to climb
onto pipes, traverse up buildings and
navigate ventilation shafts.
When do we get more?
Prison Break is out in March, so well have
something more on this very soon. Deep
Silver are looking to crack the console
audience with this one, so expect a
hands-on look at the game next month.
Anything else
to declare?
No word on a demo yet, but ZootFly want
this in the hands of as many of you as
possible. Were condent that it will

What exactly is supCom?
Rather than being another ugly name-shortening in the vein of SuBo or
Brangelina, Supreme Commander, or SupCom, is an RTS on the grandest
scale. You can scale the whole map outwards so you can see the entire
planet, or zoom all the way into your troops. Its quite something.
Whats happening with the sequel?
Gas Powered Games have decided to focus more on delivering a strong,
narrative-driven experience on top of the games massive battles. Players
will take control of one of three enigmatic commanders, three former
friends who get dragged into an intergalactic war between the United Earth
Federation, The Illuminate and the Cybran Nation. Square-Enix is promising
rich storytelling. This could add some texture to enormous battles.
the battles are where its at, though?
Unquestionably so. As with the original Supreme Commander, its all about the
scale here. You can create and customise huge armies to battle across the planet.
You can even customise your troops and machinery in real time on the battleeld,
so youll not only have to have a keen mind but also quick reactions. After all, a slow
general is a dead general.
Anything else to declare?
The multiplayer is probably the most exciting thing of all. Taking on another
human mind in such an epic, grand-scale war is going to be fairly exhilarating,
and a far cry from the usual crawling pace of an online RTS. If Gas Powered
Games can overcome the traditional crutch of the console RTS which is the
controls system then this could be the rst must-have genre entry since Halo
Wars. And a damn sight more in-depth, too.

Whats the story?
Traditionally, Final Fantasy games mix traditional fantasy with science to
create something odd and unique. In this instance the 13th ocial
iteration the story revolves around strange beings who are governed by
crystals, and who live on a paradise world which overlooks a darker, more
dangerous planet called Pulse. Theres an obvious sociopolitical metaphor
from the start, along with dragons and giant ice women.
What do we know?
The games actually out now in Japan on PS3, and while completely
incomprehensible to anyone who isnt up on their Kanji, its clear that it
looks stunning. The active battle system which mixes real-time elements
with the traditional turn-based structure appears to be a success among
Japanese Final Fantasy fans, and the early sales gures are very promising.
When do we get more?
Its not appearing over here until the Spring, so theres enough time to get all of
your current games out of the way before you lose your life in this. And remember,
even though its a six month wait, it used to take over a year for Final Fantasy to get
the full localisation treatment.
Anything else to declare?
The Xbox version appears on more than one disc, with Square
aiming to get all that content onto 3 DVDs in order to match up to
the size of a Blu Ray. Whether or not this will mean painful disc
swapping or the more user-friendly install system we saw put to
good use in Forza Motorsport 3 is not yet known. Fingers and Elfen

Whats the story?
In 2013 Moscow is destroyed by a terrifying but unspecied nuclear event, forcing
any survivors to move underground. 20 years on, and an entire generation of
Russians have been born and raised in this subterranean society. As time goes on,
though, the mutated horrors of the world above attempt to besiege these
peaceful settlements. You play as Artyom, a young man who was born
during the res, but was raised underground.
What do we know?
Artyom takes on a desperate mission to the surface, for a reason that THQ is
keeping under wraps, but its a good enough excuse for a post-apocalyptic
FPS set in freezing Russia. The overworld is overrun with mutants, much like
Fallout 3s capital wasteland, and youll have to explore the ruined plains of
Russias once proud capital city on your mission. Expect a slow burning,
creeping dread to the atmosphere. Metro 2033 promises to be as much
survival horror as it is shooter. Youll also be able to venture into the pitch-
black tunnels of the citys subway systems, but who knows whats lurking
down there? Doesnt sound like much fun to nd out
When do we get more?
Its due for release fairly soon, although we wouldnt be too surprised to see that
pushed back. Fans of STALKER on the PC will know what to expect, and while
Metro 2033 doesnt look to have the depth of that game, it certainly shares much
of its atmosphere.
Anything else to declare?
The Xbox is overrun by shooters at the moment, but Metro 2033 appears like a
serious change of pace from what weve been used to. If it can live up to its
promise and deliver a cerebral and thoughtful take on a society in ruin, then it
could be a contender to give the mighty Fallout 3 a sizeable run for its money.

of possible combinations of Plasmids,
upgrade tonics and weapon power ups
that youll come across throughout the
course of the game, BioShock 2s
gunplay is a marked step up from that
of the original.
In many ways though, that was the
worry that a focus on blasting would
mean losing sight on what made
BioShock a subversive masterpiece in
the rst place, namely the moments
where you werent shooting. If
anything though, the atmosphere and
sense of place is amplied here.
Perhaps being able to see Rapture from
the outside during the staggeringly
well-realised ocean walks lends it a
deeper coherence, making more
sense of its network of hubs and
aquarium-style tubes.
Regardless, BioShock 2s Rapture
is an even nastier place than you
remember. Paupers Drop, the
dilapidated hotel that hosts the rst
proper plot details, is a genuinely
unpleasant example of an objectivist
dream turned into a realist nightmare.
It houses a fanatical religious group
known as The Family, and tales of
despair and gut-wrenching remorse lie
hauntingly around every corner.
In BioShock 2, as before, the devil is
in the details. Its in the hopeless
scrawlings on a distant wall, in the
dashed hope of an audio log, in the
very creaking and heaving of the city
itself, weighed down under the
pressure of the ocean and its own
fatal shortcomings.
And then, of course, theres the Little
Sisters. The lifeblood of Rapture, and
once again the center of this second
story. The choice to rescue or harvest
them is a moral dilemma once
more, but do you have the heart to
murder a child when shes sat on your
shoulders and called you Daddy?
Maybe in the murky depths of post
Ryan Rapture, you do. Its just that kind
of place, and to be totally honest, we

Of course, this is the sequel to Red

maintains the Dead Eye mechanic that
proved so popular before, meaning
Marston can slow down time and
occurrences that happen as you trot
through the open world atop your
trusty steed. We saw a horse-jacking
attempt, a cougar attack, a prison
escape and an outback execution in
just a few short in-game hours, all of
which happened without any scripting
or prompting at all.
Rockstar is promising some 200 of
these events that can happen at any
point, serving to esh out a true living,
breathing, violent and intimidating
version of the West. Every single one of
these events could be interfered with,
should you wish, from skinning an
animal for its pelt to shooting the
prisoners or the guards during the
escape. You take on Red Dead
Redemption how you see t, with only
an honour system and a fame meter
governing how civilians, lawmen and
bandits react to you on your travels. Its

quickly mark targets, before snapping
back to realtime and hitting every one
of them with his faultless aim. Its
probably the most videogamey conceit
in the whole thing, but adds spice to
the shootouts.
The actual gunplay is reminiscent of
GTA IV, with cover, a subtle blend of
auto-aim and free shooting, and of
course the sublime NaturalMotion
ragdoll animations, which give
everything such weight and realism.
Even the animals.
Missions on show
The story missions on show involved a
Mexican rebel leader who had to be
rescued from a heavily guarded
impound. It was exciting to see the
gunplay, physics and even a horse-back
chase in action, but without proper
hands-on, its hard to judge how well
the combat handles.
Instead, let us revel in the open
world. The charming little town of
Chuparosa, with its lively market place,
grimy bordello and bounty bulletin
board covered in wanted posters
(which of course, you can choose to
take on). The treasure maps that dont
just mark an X on your map, but give
you an impressionistic sketch of the
location of who knows? Or how
about the thunderous clatter of hooves
as you gallop across the outback atop
your horse, just looking for America. For
someone who has grown up with the
imagery and iconography of the West,
this is already a truly staggering
achievement. If Red Dead Redemption
can live up to the promise of John
Marstons rst day in our company,
then this is already going to be a strong
contender for 2010s game of the year.
As the night draws in though, the
desert becomes a dangerous place,
and Martsons day comes full circle. He
sets up camp again. The re is lit, the
stars are in the sky and the horse is
safely tied up. Wherever he lays his hat
is his home. Game saved. Time to
exhale. A new dawn is coming.

have gone into the co-op. This is a
completely independent story,
specically structured and designed for
two players to tackle in tandem, and it
adds hours of gameplay to an already
impressively chunky package.
The whole thing acts as a prequel to
the events of the single player. Third
Echelon has received intel that a rogue
element in the Russian military has
acquired a small number of nuclear
warheads, and intends on selling them
on the black market. Step up, then,
Archer and Kestrel, two super agents
who are primed and ready to get the
warheads back.
Archer and Kestrel, though, have
never met. Archer is an American and
Kestrel a Russian, and much of the
narrative tension comes from their
begrudging trust of one another
during a politically volcanic time. What
youll quickly nd out though, is that
banter is kept to a minimum. This is
all about professionalism.

As in the single player, much of the
combat operates on the predatory
mark and execute system. Either player
can activate sonar goggles which
allows them to see all the enemies in a
room. As soon as an enemy can be
seen, it can be marked with a red
arrow, with the idea being that the
team of two marks all threats before
formulating a plan.
Using communication, stealth and
the environment (many walls and pillars
can be scaled), Kestrel and Archer must
take down the enemy however they

one and take them hostage, or if youve

earned the right by racking up a few
kills, carry out a dual execute, a
cut-scene that immediately eliminates
all marked targets.
Its all about risk/reward. Do you
move forward and grab enemies in
order to earn executes, or simply hang
back in the shadows, messing with the
enemy AI in true Splinter Cell fashion?
Each time we played through the
bunker scenario with a member of the
Ubi team, the AI reacted dierently.
There are no set paths or routines, so
everything has to be reacted to on the
y. This creates some fantastic drama
particularly if one of your party is
spotted. The agents cant take much
punishment, and if shot a few times,
will go down and need rescuing. The downed player can even fake death
in this situation before sitting up and
popping o a few shots, but thats
another risk, as any other guards will
blast the resurrected agent.
Getting through Splinter Cell
Convictions six-hour co-operative
campaign is going to take patience,
planning and an instinct for fast,
reactive stealth. Although if that doesnt
work, you can always go balls-out and
embark on a shotgun charge with your
partner. The game doesnt discriminate
against your play style, but wed still
recommend sticking to the shadows.
Its what Sams been teaching us all

Thankfully, it does only take about an
hour to readjust. Bayonetta is insane, no
doubt, its about a witch who has guns
on her hands and feet, and uses her

this is what games used to be like when
the industry was more Japan-centric,
and nobody batted an eyelid, save for a
confused mother here and there. Its like
T
he rst few hours of Bayonetta
are some of the most
overwhelming in any game this
generation. After a steady stream of
Western FPSs and stat-heavy RPGs, its
quite a transition to go back to Japan.
And crazy Japan at that.
Within 60 minutes, Bayonetta has
staged a battle on top of a plummeting
clock tower, made you witness the
funeral of Dr. Robotnik and forced you to

Perhaps the key to the games

Screen-lling bosses appear with
terrifying regularity, but theyre not just

Every level is dierent, every

To be totally honest, the plot makes
little sense to anyone other than
Platinum Games, but it matters not, as
the cutscenes are funny, baudy and

Thats not to say Bayonetta is
impenetrable, far from it in fact. While it
does get tough towards the end, it also
does a fantastic job of coaching you
through its mechanics. Its not as
demanding as some of the other
examples of the genre, and theres even
an incredibly easy mode if you just want
to stare at Bayonettas bare arse for a few
hours. Fair enough.
Playing like that, though, is really
missing the point. Platinum Games have
created a playground for us to treasure.
The satisfaction that comes from
clearing a screens worth of enemies
without being hit is pretty much second

second playthrough and youll want to
play it again youll be switching
weapons mid-combo, throwing in Witch

This is the pinnacle of third-person

developers trying to ape this
increasingly popular genre. Theres a

This is his world youre playing around in,

Of course, it cant all be perfect, or

with pacing issues. Too often it will grind

Also, despite being an admirable

A
twelfth century Italian poem may not form the
most obvious basis for a videogame, but the
concept the tale of a man forced to venture
through the depths of Hell to nd salvation is
certainly one of the most intriguing ideas yet realised on
Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. And so with that in mind,
weve devised this supplement to introduce you to one of
the best action/adventure games youll likely play this
year, and certainly one of the most unnerving.
You see, the phrase Welcome to Hell would likely be
seen as more of a compliment by developers Visceral
Games than a derogatory statement, such are their
remarkable efforts in bringing Dante Alighieris interpretation
of Hell to life. Joining Dante as he battles through the Nine
Circles of Hell to stop Lucifer from seducing the soul of his
true love Beatrice, Dantes Infernos delicious blend of
third-person adventure, gloriously gory combat and
captivating dialogue offers an experience unlike any other.
And with the variety of beasts and imaginative
environments displayed within each Circle, as well as the
head-scratching puzzles and epic boss ghts, we think
Dantes Inferno could well beat God of War at its own
game and become a title that could, just like the poem,
go down in history as a classic of its time.
So, pack your scythe and join us on a journey through
the depths of Hell as we plunge you into the devilishly
good world of Dantes Inferno.

So when our brush with death in
the opening ve minutes of Dantes
Inferno had us duelling off against
the Grim Reaper himself, we knew
that Visceral Games was more than
prepared to go against the grain of
typical gaming standards. Even
more satisfying than that
knowledge was the end result of
the showdown, which saw the most
intimidating gure of our culture
decapitated by his own scythe. Its
simply the most powerful opening
to a game weve seen in months
and a start by which Dantes Inferno
means to go on.

Dantes Inferno, then, is a
no-holds-barred adaptation of the
rst chapter of Dante Alighieris
The Divine Comedy, that follows
the plights of veteran Crusader
Dante as he journeys through the
Nine Circles of Hell in an attempt
to win back the love of his wife
Beatrice, herself slain in the
opening moments of the game
and summoned to the underworld
by the seductive Lucifer.
And thus were thrown into the
ery pit of Dantes Inferno, a
compelling tale of anguish and
despair as our hero ghts off
against the sinners condemned to
Hell in an attempt to stop the devil
himself from seducing his love, all
the while shaping his own
destiny towards either
redemption or damnation.

Visceral Games talk to us about Dantes journey through the underworld
H
aving taken Dante on an

violent) voyage through
several of the darker layers
of Hell, we had a few questions
we wanted to ask the games
developer Visceral Games
Why did Visceral decide to try
and break into the third-
person hack and slash market
with Dantes Inferno?
Actually, under our former name
EA Redwood Shores, we
developed and shipped Lord of the
Rings: Return of the King, and
weve always made third-person
action games here. So there is a
tradition in the studio for this kind
of game, and several folks who
worked on LotR are on the
Dantes team (including the lead
programmer). In recent years,
weve made games in a variety of

genres, but we felt hack and slash
was a natural t, and part of the
studios tradition.
Dantes Inferno is launching at a
time surrounded by other
high-prole releases from within
the same or similar genre,
including Darksiders, Bayonetta
and God of War III. What do you
think will make Dantes Inferno
stand out from the crowd?
First and foremost, the game is
based on an existing piece of
literature, and has an incredibly
accessible and powerful storyline/
universe. The idea of descending
down into the medieval Christian
notion of what Hell is like, as
famously described by Dante
Aligheiri, is a really compelling
fantasy. The subject matter is dark
and fascinating. Secondly, we think
the environments and characters are
really spectacular; our art
department has worked tirelessly to
bring these worlds and creatures to
life, from the conceptual stage all
the way to the nal rendering. We
think the look of the game really
stands out. Third, the combat
system and game systems have
light-RPG elements to them. And of
course, its a highly polished and
well-crafted experience, something
people have come to expect from
Visceral Games.
Dantes Inferno seems to borrow
heavily from the God of War
series of games. Was Viscerals
intention simply to create its
own spin on the acclaimed God
of War series?
We certainly admire the combat
systems in games like God of War,
Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, etc. We
aspired to build a fast-paced highly
responsive melee combat system.
The dual nature of Dantes scythe/
cross combination (one melee,
one ranged) actually feels a little
more like Devil May Cry than God
of War to be honest, but the
magic system is quite different,
and the open-ended nature of
the upgrade system is unique
to Dantes Inferno.

modiers to Dantes arsenal. In
terms of how the player earns
Holy or Unholy experience, we
implemented a Punish/Absolve
feature that lets you choose how you
want to nish off your enemies (in
either a brutal fashion, or with a holy

further down one tree or the other.
Theres a lot of sexual imagery
in Dantes Inferno. Do you think
theres a place for sex in video
games? What purpose does sex
serve in Dantes Inferno?
Hell and sex have been interlinked
Are there any unique elements
or mechanics that you think
Dantes Inferno brings to this
specic genre?
Our goal was to bring a light RPG-like
system to the game, giving players
two paths to pursue (Holy and
Unholy), and then being very open-
ended about the way upgrades and
new abilities open up across the
game. Magics are themed Holy and
Unholy, and there is also a system of
Relics, which are equipable items
with their own upgrades, which can
provide a wide variety of passive
since the dawn of mythology, and
never more so than in the medieval
mindset. The damned are always
depicted as naked in Dantes poem
and the wider medieval tradition,
and Lust is one of the most
signicant of the mortal sins. Were
not making any kind of statement
or judgement about it, its just the
way things were.
In recent years, EA seems to
have been focusing its attention
on more mature, adult titles
like The Godfather, Dead Space,
and now Dantes Inferno. Why do
you think there has been this
shift, and what does Dantes
Inferno bring to the industry?
I think the original gamer generation
has aged and matured to a point
where its exciting for them to see
the medium exploring dark and
mature subject matter. This was a
natural progression for movies as

my profession to speculate on what
makes these dark fantasies so
appealing to people, but its the
reality of our core audience. What
we have done with Dantes Inferno
thats somewhat unique is to expose
how that dark fantasy has been with
us for a very long time. 700 years
ago, creative people were exploring
the same subjects in art and
literature, and that tradition
continues to this day.
Much of your audience may not
be familiar with The Divine
Comedy. Is that a concern, or
is Dantes Inferno accessible
enough for anyone to sit down
and enjoy regardless of whether
theyve read the poem or not?

At the moment we are most
comfortable with third-

are highly polished,
carefully crafted, story-

seems to be dark and

gamers with thick skins, so the
controversy is exciting. We love it
when people play the game and
are surprised at how solid it is. We
hope and expect to persuade
all the doubters when the game
comes out!
