I hope you are well and enjoying the beautiful season. We have some great news.
We recently celebrated our 24th Annual Capoeira Festival honoring the achievements of 92 children and 56 adults. As a result of our
growth, the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center awarded us with a second studio to expand our programs.
We have a number of renovations to complete in order to have the studio ready by August 1, in time for the new school year. We plan
to install a sustainable bamboo floor, electrical work, lighting, fans and air conditioning. Built in 1898, our current home is in a building
that was once a public school. Our studios, which are beautiful spaces with high ceilings, used to be classrooms. Though gorgeous
spaces, they are in need of plenty of work to be brought up to code and made safe and comfortable for our classes. In an effort to
reach this goal, we have launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise the funds needed by July 16. Please consider making a generous

About Afro Brazil Arts
After a year in Salvador, Brazil, studying capoeira with many grand masters, I returned to New York in 1988 and began teaching in two
high schools in the Bronx. In 1989, I opened classes for adults and children at a community center in the East Village. Two years later,
Afro Brazil Arts (ABA) was formed as a non-profit organization to support our youth programs, bringing capoeira to underserved
communities throughout the New York area. ABA continues to be a pioneer in bringing the benefits of capoeira practice to young
people and training future generations of teaching artists.
Our achievements include
Capoeira Angola Quintal (CAQ) Academy Since 1989, teaching classes for children and adults
and developing teachers and leaders
ABA Troupe has performed nearly one thousand shows mostly in schools, including colleges and adult venues.
ABAs teaching artists have taught capoeira classes to boys and girls in grades K-12, including
special needs children.
CAQ is a leader in mindful capoeira practice, making capoeira accessible and safe for people of
all ages and abilities.
Our plans as we expand are to increase our scholarships for children passionate about capoeira though unable to afford it, to create a
teen program, to offer annual teaching artist training seminars and host school trips for students to experience capoeira in the
academy.
