This PhD position involves studying the Watershed W tungsten deposit in north Queensland, Australia to document its geological characteristics, mineralization patterns and structural controls to understand its genesis and potential. The successful candidate will receive a 3-year A$25,500 stipend and conduct research at James Cook University's Economic Geology Research Centre in Townsville, Australia. Applications will be reviewed starting August 15, 2014 until a suitable applicant is identified.

We seek an outstanding and motivated PhD candidate to study the Watershed W deposit, north Queensland, Australia.
The Watershed W deposit is located ~160 km NW of Cairns in north Queensland. It currently has an JORC compliant resource of 49.2 Mt averaging 0.14wt% WO3 and is among the top 10 undeveloped W resources outside of China. The deposit is hosted in Siluro-Devonian Hodgkinson Formation arenaceous and argillaceous meta-sediments. Tungsten mineralisation mainly occurs as scheelite in quartz-scheelite vein swarms, and as disseminations in vein halos, calc-silicates, albite-muscovite altered arenites, and albitised felsic dykes. The vein width and abundance generally increase downwards. More than 55km of drilling has been carried out in the deposit, yet the mineralisation is still open along strike and at depth.
The main aims of the project are to document the geological characteristics, particularly the spatial zoning patterns, the paragenesis, the fluid evolution and the structural control of the Watershed deposits and nearby prospects, and to understand the genesis of the mineralisation and alteration, and thereby infer the potential of mineralisation at depth and along strike. For details of the project, please see https://espaces.edu.au/my-space/available-phd-projects.
The project will be based at EGRU (Economic Geology Research Centre), School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, James Cook University, Townsville, Queensland, Australia. EGRU/JCUs research in economic geology is recognised internationally and is supported by world-class analytical facilities. Townsville is close to many world-class mineral deposits.
The PhD student, selected on a competitive basis, will receive a stipend scholarship of A$25,500 per annum for 3 years with a possibility to extend for half a year. For an exceptional and competitive international student, an international fee-waiver may be granted.
The PhD student is expected to start in late August early September 2014.
International students whose native language is not English need to meet the JCU English requirements (IELTS 7.0 with no components <6.5, or TOEFL 100 with a minimum writing score of 23, or equivalent; http://www.jcu.edu.au/international/apply/entry/JCUPRD1_073732.html Band 3a) to be eligible to apply.
To apply please send CV, informal transcripts, statement of research interests and career goals, English test results if applicable, and publications or thesis to EGRU@jcu.edu.au for initial evaluation before submitting scholarship applications. For enquiries, please email Zhaoshan.chang@jcu.edu.au.
We will start to review applications from 15 August 2014 until a satisfactory applicant is identified. The student is expected to commence shortly after.
