INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ROORKEE

ATTENTION:All UG/PG/Ph.D. Students

It has been observed in the recent past that students are making frequent request through their HoDs/Chairmen, DAPC for granting permission for the following:
a)

Self-study course in semester other than final semester of study and that too for more than one self-study course.

b)

Extra credits for more than two times in different semesters and that too much more than permissible.

c)

Registration for a back paper even if the time-table does not permit to attend all the classes of back paper.

d)

Request for granting permission for any of the above till the beginning of MTE.

Till now, these permissions were granted as recommended by the HoDs/Chairmen, DAPC but it has led to other problems in the system. At times, these students keep on
requesting the faculty to shift the classes in some odd hours so that they can attend the classes.
In order to stream-line the process for future, it has been decided that permission for any request will be accorded strictly as per rules and regulations. The rules related to above
problems are reproduced below and few points are explained:
R24.7 SELF-STUDY COURSE
One self study course may be offered under special circumstances from the list of regular courses of study, to a student in his/her final semester or thereafter. This course shall be
offered only if approved by the Dean, Academics on the recommendation of Chairman, DAPC/CAPC with the provision that the course evaluation process will not be diluted. The
guidelines for the allocation and evaluation of self-study courses are given below:
Guidelines for Allocation and Evaluation of Self-Study Course
a)

A student cannot claim to take a course as a self-study course as a matter of right.

b)

The course can only be offered to a student in his/ her final semester when he/she is likely to fall short by a maximum of 6 earned credits to become eligible for the award of
degree.

c)

Only a course from the list of regular courses of study for the programme, which the student has not cleared and which is not being offered in that semester as a regular course,
can be given as a self-study course. However, Group Discussion and viva voce cannot be taken as a self study course.

d)

The duration of the course will be a full semester.

e)

The student will apply to Dean, Academics through his programme advisor and the concerned Chairman DAPC well before the date of registration. The course will be offered only
if Dean, Academics approves it.

f)

If the course is approved by Dean, Academics, the Head of the concerned Department will appoint a course coordinator in consultation with Chairman DAPC. A teaching load of 1
hour/week will be counted in the time-table of the coordinator.

g)

No formal lectures will be held in the course but laboratory, design, and tutorial exercises will be conducted if they form an integral part of the course. The course coordinator will
assign tutorial problems / laboratory exercises to the student and monitor his/her progress weekly.

h)

The mid-term and end-term examinations for the course will be scheduled by the department like in other courses and the course coordinator will be responsible for the conduct of
these examinations.

i)

For the award of marks, various components, e.g., lecture, tutorial, and practical, will be given the same weight as specified in the curricular structure.

j)

The final grade will be awarded on the basis of Absolute Grading System and will not exceed B in any case.

k)

The grade moderation committee for the course will be the same as for other courses of the class.

l)

Normal attendance regulations will not apply to this course.

The following additional points need to be noted:

a)

Only the program core course comes under the category of self-study.

b)

If a student has back either in Institute Elective or in Departmental Elective, he/she can take another elective from these categories and complete the requirement.

c)

A course can be taken as a self-study only and only if it is not running in that semester.

d)

The registration for self-study course shall be done either before the start of semester or within 10 working days from the start of semester permissible to add any course so
that the evaluation of the course is not diluted.

e)

The teachers are expected to give tutorial sheets regularly and evaluate them as the student is not attending the formal classes.

f)

If one of the components is practical, the students are expected to do the practicals during the semester either with the help of teacher or teaching assistant.

R18.7 EXTRA CREDITS IN A SEMESTER

A student may register for a minimum of 15 credits and a maximum of 24 credits. But on the recommendation of the department/centre, Dean, Academics, may allow a student to
register for a maximum of 28 credits in not more than two semesters during the entire programme for fulfilling the requirements of minimum earned credits. However, the credits for
NCC/ NSS/NSO/Rangering, proficiency and discipline shall not be counted for this purpose.
The following additional points need to be noted:
a)

Extra credits are permissible only TWICE during the study of entire program.

b)

Normally students request for extra-credits in II Yr and III Yr with a hope that they will be able to complete the course in 4(B.Tech.)/5(B.Arch./IDD) years. These students
normally need to do extra credits again in IV Yr/ V Yr and request for the same which is not permissible. These students are advised to plan their courses such that they need
not to request for deviation later on.

R18.2 REGISTRATION FOR BACK PAPER:

Student should first register for the courses in which he/she has been declared failed in the previous year/semester as back papers and then register for the remaining courses of the
semester to make up the total required credits for that semester. However, a student shall not be allowed to register for the courses offered to students of third year, if he/she has not
cleared all the courses of first year and a student shall not be allowed to register for the courses offered to students of fourth year, if he/she has not cleared all the courses of second
year and a student shall not be allowed to register for the courses offered to students of fifth year, if he/she has not cleared all the courses of third year.
The following additional points need to be noted:
a)

If a student is registering for a back paper, he/she must ensure that the back paper slots are available and do not clash with the slots of other registered subjects. The student
are required to enclose back paper time-table with the subject registration for cross check.

b)

Only after registering the back paper(s) student are allowed to register for courses of the current semester provided time-table permits. It has been observed that students
register for back paper(s) even if the time-table does not permit and try to attend few classes of one subject and few classes of other subject so that somehow 75% attendance
is maintained in both which is not allowed.

The students are also required to check the time-table before registering for back paper(s).
Further, any request for extra credits, self-study course or back paper must come within first 10 working days of the semester.
All are advised to please adhere the deadlines given in the academic calendar and no request on what so ever ground shall be entertained in case it is not covered in the
existing Ordinances/Regulations. The current regulations have been provided to all students at the time of admission and also it is available on Institute Website.
