Bullying and School Violence

Whether a child is the victim of name calling or physical abuse, bullying is

devastating to a child's self esteem.
Is your child the victim of bullying? Sometimes the signs are hard to spot,
but kids who avoid school, complain of stomach aches or headaches,
change their route to or from school, come home disheveled or missing
possessions, may be victims. Sybella Artz, a researcher in bullying behavior
and author of "Sex, Power and the Violent School Girl" says "if your child
tells you he is being bullied then it's very important to believe your child, to learn more about
the situation and become a very good listener, even if your child just insinuates that
something is happening." She adds that "it's important not to over-emotionalize your response
because children will feel responsible for, and overwhelmed by your emotions, and in turn
will try to minimize the bullying. So stay on a very even keel."
And don't expect your child to come home sporting a black eye as proof of bullying. It isn't
always physical. Emotional bullying like name calling and threats, and social bullying like
exclusion, can totally undermine a child or youth's self esteem. While both boys and girls use
these bullying tactics, it is more common among girls, explains Artz. "Because girls are
typically more verbal than boys, there seems to be more of a leaning towards verbal violence
and intimidation and behavior that is intimidating, particularly exclusionary. And that has to
do with being able to put things into words. Boys are more direct. They'll just smack you."
Artz adds that typically, when a girl is bullied, she finds herself at the receiving end of nasty
gossip and rumors. "They will create factions, groups or small cliques. And they will begin to
character assassinate by creating rumors and gossip and building a consensus that a particular
girl is in the wrong and deserves to be beaten and have retaliation. At the very least this will
show up as exclusion or shunning. A girl will come to school and suddenly find herself
excluded from a group that she once found she belonged to and she won't be told what it's
about."
No matter what type of bullying is being carried out and no matter whether it's being
perpetrated by a boy or a girl, Artz says parents must step in and "work closely with good
allies, perhaps a good school counselor, principal or vice-principal who is enlightened, and
begin to work in a concerted way. And stay with it until you've found a conclusion you can
live with."

activities.

Ways to Prevent School Violence

These steps should be implemented by parents as well as the school authorities, especially by the
school teachers. It involves monitoring student activities not only inside the classroom, but also at or
within the school premises to ensure prevention of school violence and provide school safety.
How to Prevent School Violence- Using Technological Aids
You can take the help of various devices like CCTV cameras and metal detectors to keep a check on
any unwanted material that is being brought into the school premises. Random checks can also help
keep a tab on such behavior. This needs to be done in schools that are at a considerably high risk of
school violence.
How to Prevent School Violence- Monitoring
Teachers should monitor student behavior within the classroom and also outside the classroom. If you
find any student at the risk of giving rise to school violence, keep a tab on the student's behavior and
also report this to the higher authorities at the school. Also, try and have frequent talks with the
student and report any drastic change in behavior. This method of early intervention can help prevent
school violence to a great extent.

School authorities must clearly specify all the rules, regulations and policies of the school to the
students as well as the parents, at the time of admission and also during academic meetings. Clearly
state the kind of behavior expected, the actions that would taken in case of misbehavior, what not to
bring to school, etc.
How to Prevent School Violence- Formation of Student Groups
School authorities can form student led anti-violence groups that keep a tab on violent behavior in
school. Have frequent meetings and implement strategies using suggestions from students and
teachers in order to prevent school violence. This can be one of the effective ways to prevent school
violence.
How to Prevent School Violence- School Violence Prevention Workshops
Conduct school violence prevention workshops in the schools with the involvement of all the school
students. Discuss the importance of prevention of school violence, consequences of alcohol and drug
abuse and also ask the students about their view on this. Discuss the laws related to crimes, especially
juvenile delinquency and ask them to help any of their friends involved in any such activity.
Intervention may help revert such students back to normal behavior.
Implementing these steps will go a long way in preventing school violence and reducing the rate of
school violence. Parents should also know how to prevent violence and bring up children in an
atmosphere conducive to their growth and development.

School Violence Types

School violence is an issue that is posing severe harm to most of the schools in United States
of America. It is not only the United States of America but schools all around the world
which is gravely affected by this problem. The peculiar thing about school violence is that it
has taken many forms over the years. If the authorities try to arrest one type of school
violence then another type arises from the corner. It is indeed very difficult for a normal
school administration to take control of the situation if they do not understand the various
types of school violence.
School violence types are classified mainly into school violence by teachers and school
violence by students. We will learn about the contribution of students first. Bullying is one of
the common forms of school violence. In bullying, a dominant child or a gang of students
will try to harass or tease other students who are less aggressive. This type of school violence
is found in most schools and even with strict measures and policies the authorities are not
able to control it mainly because of the reason that it is natural for students in the same class
to tease each other. Bullying has several types in it as well. Verbal abuse, physical attacks and
terrifying are the types of bullying activities. Physical attacks may vary from the degree of
damage it does to the affected child.
Another type of school violence is to indulge in vandalism i.e. bringing thugs and other
ruffians to beat up other students. This is also very common in most schools where aggressive
students bring their outside friends to terrify the students who oppose them. Though these
thugs might not enter the school compound they will be waiting outside to lay hands on
innocent children on request of the aggressive students. This is also classified as school
violence though it is not exactly inside a school campus.
Sexual harassment is also one type of school violence. Girl children are always victims of
sexual harassment. Indulging in activities like sex, taking MMS clips of nudity and other
unethical behavior is also classified as school violence. The use of drugs and drug trafficking
is another type of school violence. Bringing knives and other harmful weapons is also a form
of school violence. Drugs, sexual harassment and weapons are not as common as that of
vandalism or bullying, but they do happen in certain schools. Thefts and burglary also come
under school violence.
School violence by teachers is a type of violence that needs to be discussed very clearly. It is
the punishments meted out to children by the teachers and school administration. This was
the first instance where the term School Violence was used. It was used to define the
excessive punishments given by teachers to their students for their mistakes. There are
numerous cases where the teachers have been merciless in giving beatings and punishments
which give severe psychological illness. Many children have been victims of such overboard
punishments by teachers.
