Ethiopian Sport Hero and Legend Abebe Bikila

Abebe Bikila (1932 - 1973)

Abebe Bikila was exceptionally talented at the

marathon, winning two gold medals, setting
world records, in the process heralding a new era
in marathon running, one in which speed was the
key to victory, rather than raw strength and endurance. More than three decades after his running career ended, Bikila is widely recognized as
the greatest marathoner of all-time.
Abebe Bikila was born in 1932 in a town called
Jato, outside of Addis Ababa. According to tradition, he spent most of his childhood as a shepherd and a student. In 1952, young Abebe was
hired by the Imperial Body Guard. In 1954, he
married W/t Yewibdar W/Giorghis with whom
he had four children.
Bikila spent a number of years with the Imperial Guard before he distinguished himself as an
athlete. His defining moment came when he was
watching a parade of Ethiopian athletes who had
participated in the Melbourne Olympics. Looking at the athletes who were wearing a uniform
with names written on the back, he asked who
they were. When told that they were athletes who
represented Ethiopia in the Olympics, he was de-

termined to be one of them.

In 1956, at the age of 24, he participated in the
national armed forces championships. Abebe
Bikila The hero of the time was Wami Biratu,
who held the national records in 5,000 and
10,000 meters. During the marathon, the crowd
at the stadium was waiting, expecting to see Biratu win the race. In the first few miles, Wami
was leading. After a while, radio broadcasters informed the crowd that a young unknown athlete
by the name of Abebe was leading. As Bikila was
extending his lead, the crowd waited anxiously
to see this new sensation. Bikila easily won his
first major race and later on went to break the
5,000 and 10,000 meter records held by Wami.
With those impressive results, he qualified for
the Rome Olympics.
Finally, Bikila's dream of wearing that outfit with
Ethiopia's name written on the back was realized.
Abebe's race in the Rome Olympics established
him as a running legend. Not only did he win the
race, he also set a new world record of 2:16:02,
running on the cobblestone streets of Rome with-

out shoes. He was also the first African to win an

Olympic medal. Commenting on why he had run
on bare feet, Abebe said, "I wanted the world to
know that my country Ethiopia has always won
with determination and heroism."
Bikila came to Boston in 1963, the heavy favorite to take the historic marathon. But cold winds
blowing in off the ocean in the late miles felled
the great Ethiopian, and he settled for fifth place
in a pedestrian 2:24. At the Tokyo Olympics a
year later, Bikila's fame had reached all corners
of the globe. Despite the Boston debacle, he

was favored to win the Olympic Marathon yet

again. Six weeks before the marathon however,
Bikila was taken ill with Appendicitis. He underwent surgery amid a public outcry for a proper
medical treatment. The day he arrived in Tokyo,
he hadn't fully recovered from the surgery and
limped down stairs. However, the reception Abebe received from the Japanese people helped him
recover quickly and unexpectedly. Along with
teammates Mamo Wolde and Demssie Wolde,
Bikila resumed his regular training a few days
after his arrival in Tokyo. The marathon, particularly the way Abebe won it barely six weeks
after his surgery, was astonishing. This time he
wore shoes, but still won the race easily. And
the gymnastic display he showed right after finishing the race is now a classic image engraved
in the minds of hundreds of millions of people.
This was also the first time ever that the Olympic marathon race was won consecutively by the
same athlete. The new world record of 2:12:11
that Abebe set was icing on a cake for this remarkable race. Bikila trained hard for the Mexico City Olympics of 1968. Unfortunately, he had
to withdraw from the race after 15 kilometers.
His compatriot, Mamo Wolde would later finish
the race victoriously. Bikila competed in more
than 26 major marathon races in his illustrious
athletic career.
The world championships he won in 1960 and
1962 deserve special recognition. In 1968, The
legendary Bikila was involved in a car accident
in the city of Sheno near Addis Ababa that left
him paralyzed below the waist. Over the next
several months, he was treated both in Ethiopia
and abroad. Even while in a wheelchair, Abebe's
competitive spirit and helped him compete and
win several races. In 1970, he participated in a 25
Km cross-country competition in Norway where
he won the gold medal. The illustrious life of the
legendary Abebe Bikila came to a tragic end in
October of 1973 when he finally succumbed to
a disease he had battled for many months. This
eternal Ethiopian hero was buried in the grounds
of the St. Joseph church in the presence of a huge
crowd and the then emperor, Atse Haile Selassie.
His life was over, but the memories remained.
Bikila ushered in a new era in marathon running
- and he made it look easy.

Tell me about your current position or

most recent position and how you helped
the organization accomplish its goals and
mission.

Ato Liben:TAIBU Community Health Centre was operationally established in 2008. The history of TAIBU goes back to the early 2000s
when the Black Health Alliance a membership of black individual health and other professionals as well as black grass root
community and social agencies is the
founding/parent organization that worked
tirelessly to get the approval from the Provincial government. TAIBU is very unique.
As far as I know, it is the only Community
Health Centre that has a specialized mandate and focus on one population and the
Black population at that, in Ontario, Canada and possibly North America.
As it is very well known the Black community is disproportianetly impacted by various health and social barriers and issues.
For example:
The Black community is two to three
times at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes
when compared to the White population.
Also at greater risk of developing High
Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
The Black community is impacted by
mental health disproportionately when
compared to the white as well as other racialized and immigrant populations
Even though the Black community is
not being diagnosed with different cancers
more than the white population the mortality rate for Black community members is
much higher than the white population or
other racialized groups
When looking at other social determinants of health we observe similar trends;
we have over representation of the Black

It is with the aim of addressing these health

and social issues that TAIBU as an organization was established with the support
and funding from the Ministry of Health
and Long Term Care. By 2008, the Black
Health Alliance had completed all the
necessary government processes and they
had advertised for the position. I applied
and was finally offered the position as the
first Executive Director of TAIBU. At the
time we did not have an office, a desk or
a phone. I use to hold my meetings in Tim
Hortons Caf or Libraries. After some
time, we secured a temporary office and
started employing staff.
In 2011, we moved into our permanent and
new facility that cost close to $3 Million
(internal leasehold improvement).
We provide primary healthcare (medical)
services delivered by Physicians, Nurse
Practitioners, Nurse, Social Workers, Dietitian, Chiropodist and other allied health
professionals. In addition we have a dedicated Diabetes Education Team consisting
of a Registered Nurse, a Registered Dietitian and a Social Worker. Furthermore, we
have several health promotion and community programs delivered in the community (e.g. physical activity sessions, older

adults programs, youth programs etc...).

We also ensure that we develop and deliver specialized programs focusing on health
issues and concerns particularly affecting
the Black community. I have mentioned
about the Diabetes program. We also have
a Hypertension program and a specialized
Sickle Cell clinic and program.
By the way, TAIBU is from the Swahili
language and it is a wish or greeting that
translates as Be in Good Health. In Amharic, we can translate it as Tena Yistlign.

TZTA:-

What is your greatest strength and weakness?

Ato Liben:-

I dont know if I have great strengths!

I like to work with people. That is my
strength. I have now spent almost half of
my life time working with people in different capacities and there is nothing more
rewarding than this. To be part of peoples
life journeys (hopefully in a positive way),
to learn from them and their experiences.
Over my professional experiences I have
had the greatest opportunity of meeting
people from literally all over the world.
An area for improvement for me, I would
say, is keeping a good balance between
home and work life.

TZTA:-

I recently read about you accepting the

award. What can you tell me about this?
Congratulations? How did you feel, when
you found out that you'd won?

Ato Liben:-

Thank you

Yes, I had the greatest privilege and most

humbling experience of receiving the Development Award from the Planet Africa
Group. It was such rewarding to note that
TAIBU and its effort was being recognized. TAIBU has only been operational
for the past 6 years and half and during
this period we made significant strides. We
have over 6000 registered clients receiving
a variety of programs and services. We deliver around 30 health promotion programs
in the community. We also ensure that our
programs and services are culturally appropriate and encompass the Anti Racist
and Anti Oppression Framework from the
time it is conceptualized to the time it is
delivered and evaluated.
For instance about 2 years ago we were
very fortunate to have received funding
from the Ontario Trillium Foundation
to deliver an older adults program called
Ubuntu. This is a Zulu word that means
I am who I am because of who we all are.
The majority of the older adults/seniors in
our community come from a background
where there are no formal social structures
that provide support. It is the responsibility
of the village to look after each other. The
Ubuntu project is based on this philosophy
and we have engaged over 200 older adults
in this program where they are empowered
to facilitate programs by themselves and
for themselves. This is a great social network for the older adults and it has proved
to be promising so far in ensuring that older adults age successfully.

TZTA:-

How will the award affect your work?

AtoLiben:-

Firstly, I would like this award to act as an

encouragement to my two daughters who
are both in University. Next, I would also
like for this experience to be an inspiration
and motivation to other young members of
our community. If our young generation
can envision and believe that if they work
hard, if they persist and persevere they can
realize their dreams and aspirations.
8

As it relates to my current position and

work, it serves as a reminder and further
inspiration that, if we were able to do so
much in such a short period of time, it is
possible for us to achieve more and realize
greater success moving forward.

TZTA:-

Have you won other awards in the past?

Ato Liben:-

Yes.
I was awarded the Emerging Leaders
Award from the Association of Ontario
Health Centres in 2012.
In 2013, at the Black History Event organized by TAIBUs members and clients, I
was awarded the Community Recognition
Award.

TZTA:-

What do you think is the big thing happening in the next ten years?

Ato Liben:-

Personally, in 10 years I would like to retire and spend time reading books and travelling all over Ethiopia to learn about my
country and myself.
As it relates to TAIBU and my professional
world, my vision is to continue to fulfill the
mandate and vision of the founding members of the organization as well as the direction provided by the Board of Directors.
The rationale and mandate of TAIBU is
wide in scope large geographical area of
Toronto and the GTA and profound in its
extent addressing and reducing the health
and social challenges and barriers faced by
the Black community. This is also a historical and political mandate. It is not difficult for one to imagine the responsibility
that TAIBU is entrusted with. Hence, for
the next 10 years and more, the vision that
my staff and I have is to continue our progress towards this goal. If within 6 years we
were able to achieve so much, there is no
reason why we cannot achieve even more.

. -

In addition, I also have a personal vision

for my community as an Ethiopian. Now
as well as before TAIBU, I have been given the greatest privilege and honour of
working with members of the Ethiopian
community (with individuals as well as organizations). I would like to capitalize on
this opportunity to work much closer with
my community. Given that we are part of
the Black community and as pointed out
earlier, given the health outcomes data
clearly show that we are at greater risk of
developing serious and chronic conditions
disproportionately. We can prevent these
conditions. We can educate and support individuals who are already diagnosed with
these conditions so they can lead a quality
life style. As the spirit of Ubuntu reminds
us, if I am not well then we all are not well.
If I can be made well then all of us can be
made well.
TAIBU has partnered in past, for instance,
with the Ethiopian Community of Toronto and the GTA and delivered some health
promotion programs. We are currently
working closely with Ethiopian doctors
to provide dedicated Diabetes Education
support and management for their patients.
This is a good beginning. We have a lot
more to do.
So I am indirectly asking for the support of
and engagement from the members of our
community.

TZTA:-

Do you have anything else to add?

Ato Liben:-

Tena Yistlign TAIBU!

Ruby Latif

Samuel Getachew
Toronto

Just South of Bloor, near a Shoppers
Drug Mart, was where I first met Ruby Latif for
the first time with her Liberal Don Boudria like
colleague, Zubair Patel, who, like the Liberal
legend, rose through the Liberal ranks to that of
an effective political machine in his own right.

I was new in town. I had sent an
invitation to the then Premier, Dalton McGuinty,
to attend an event I was helping organize in
the community. Since the event was seen as
an ethnic event, my invitation had reached
Latif, my Facebook friend instead. She was
then in charge of ethnic outreach in the office
of the Premier and Ottawa South MPP. It was
her who decided if one was worth the time or
resources of the Premiers office or the attention
of a junior staff member. Are you or your event
worth a cut-and-paste scroll from the Premier or
the attention of people who matter? It was her
who made that decision.

Not only did she want to know about
the event I was helping organize but she wanted
to get to know me and my own aspirations.
It seemed she wanted to have a long-term
conversation with me.

That rare meeting gave me a glimpse
of the people I needed to know at Queens Park
and within Toronto if I needed to be an effective
activist and build working relationships
myself. This was long before the National Post
described her as John Torys Jason Kenney.

Today, her unique way to connect
with the ordinary everyday people to deliver
results for her extraordinary chosen candidates
is being noticed in many high places by
powerful people. Nowhere was it apparent than
her involvement with the John Tory successful
mayoral campaign that ended 6 weeks ago for
instance. The fact of the matter was, by the time
Tory announced his mayoralty campaign earlier
this year, he was placed well behind the then
frontrunner Olivia Chow and Rob Ford.

One-time TTC chair, Karen Stintz,
was also a mainstream candidate seen as his
noted arch-enemy from the right. This was not
because she could actually win the race having
moved to the radical middle to accommodate a
slew of Ontario Liberals but because people like
Latif were one of her vocal supporters. With
here comes mainstream Liberal support and an
eventual endorsement from the powerful.

Arguably, it was her early departure
from the doomed campaign of Stintz to the
candidacy of John Tory that propelled him to
that of a contender.

This past weekend Latif was also
involved in the unlikely nomination win of
Ahmed Hussen, a Somali Canadian lawyer and
social activist in York South-Weston for the
right to run as a Liberal nominee. What was the
game plan?

In her role, as a volunteer coordinator
for Hussen on Election Day, she had helped
manage volunteers and ensure the members,
especially the Somali Canadians came out
in droves to actually vote. While the other
candidates discounted the large and often
neglected population and focused on the
mainstream residents that are historically are
likely to actually vote, it was Team Hussen who
exclusively focused on the Somali-Canadian
population and engage them like never before.
In a political nomination process that does not
require citizenship, every Somali-Canadian
was suddenly an entity, an equal instead of a
patronized group. By engaging the SomaliCanadian population, the Hussen team that
Latif was one of the visible faces on E-day,
along with a slew of newbie unpolished SomaliCanadian activists, discovered that in numbers
are strengths. It soon became clear that one does
not have to colonize and try to radically change
the community to engage them to the political
process and have them experience the thrill of
a political win.

In Torontos black population, whose
many political party milestone achievements
have come via political anointment by their
respective leaders instead of fierce nomination
battles Jean Augustine (Jean Chrtien),
Margarett Best, and Mary Anne Chambers
(Dalton McGuinty) Hussens success was a
historic moment.
It was Ahmed Hussen who uttered the
memorable words about the strength of his
community in speech he gave at a fundraising
event in 2010. He reflected how he wanted to
recognize the debt that we collectively owe to
the Canadian Somali women who constantly
exhibit resilience and a quiet dignity as they
overcome overwhelming odds. He added,
That is why we consider them the undisputed
backbone of our people in Canada.

I truly experienced that on the
weekend, not just in theory but practice, as one
of Torontos most visible but politically absent
community came out to support one of their
own in huge numbers. The rare historic win,
in large part because of volunteers like Latif
and many others, is yet another reminder that
politics is indeed the art of the possible.

The charity group - People To People
Canada celebrated its 15th anniversary with a sold-out fundraiser inside
Torontos Daniel Spectrum building in
Regent Park on November 29th.
The group founded by Dr. Haregua
Getu, Hezekiel Tasse and Gezahegn
Gonete, is involved in charity work
in Ethiopia. The story of P2P began in
earnest by way of a group consultation
in 2000 and was formally launched as
an organization during the Ethiopian
North American Soccer tournament

in Toronto. Its objective became clear

when the founders decided to focus on
and address the HIV / AIDS epidemic
in the East African country.
Then, it was decided to form a committee to help it organize workshops,
help design the direction of the groups
future and impact and ultimately focus
on fundraising via its new name - People to People International Operating
Committee (Canada). According of its
founding principles, it was decided to
focus on improving the health status
of Ethiopians, help improve the basic

The annual fundraiser that includes a

keynote speaker, an Ethiopian cuisine
buffet, cultural shows and a coffee ceremony has hosted the likes of CBCs
Brian Stewart and Richard Elliot, an
Executive Director of the Canadian
HIV / AIDS Legal Network, and had
an Ethiopian Canadian PHD student as
a keynote speaker this year. The theme
of her speech focused on education,
youth empowerment and the dream of
opening a school in her home country.
This year's event had particularly paid
attention to the youth segment of the
Ethiopian-Canadian population and
was entirely hosted by a slew of young
leaders in the community.
In the past, the group has hosted a very
exclusive event at the Bell Lightbox,
inside the Toronto International Film
Festival headquarters named People4kids, with strong Ontario civil servant
representation. The event co-chaired
by Pat Deutscher, Chief Economist
and ADM, Office of Economic Policy
in the Ontario Ministry of Finance has

managed to raise thousands of dollars.

The vice-chair of the group, Teferi Negussie, also reflected on the milestone
of the group's efforts as it increases its
sponsorship of orphans from 150 to
200 by January 2015. "We are delighted and appreciative with the efforts of
our supporters", he added.
In a world that still struggles to accept
an estimated population of17.8 HIV /
AIDS youth orphans, the United Nations estimates the number to go up
to 25 million people by next year. In
Ethiopia, where P2P excels, there are
almost 1 million children under the age
of 18 that have been orphaned by the
disease.
The noted efforts of P2P, in its advocacy and engagement, in its daring fight
to change the reality of the world's
vulnerable children is an important initiative worthy of our support. In its 15
years, P2P has truly come a long way
and is having a far reaching impact in
Ethiopia and has expanded its pool of
supporters among the emerging Ethiopian-Canadian populations as well as
friends of Ethiopians.

Ethiopian Dinner Raises Funds for Water

in Rural Ethiopia

The group, it seems, lives the old words

of Margaret Mead Never doubt that
a small group of thoughtful, committed
citizens can change the world; indeed,
it's the only thing that ever has. Congratulations P2P.

Nurturing hope in rural Ethiopia

Hope for Rural Children and Orphans
(HORCO) recently held its 7th annual Celebration
of Clean Water fund-raiser at Hillside Church in
London. The event has become popular with its
faithful supporters in part because of the unique
dining experience it offers in partnership with the
Ethiopian Community in London. The evening
features an Ethiopian buffet meal complete with
all the injera and wat you can eat! Top that off
with a cup of real Ethiopian coffee and highlights
of the years work in Ethiopia, and adventurous
diners are prepared to donate generously to help
raise funds to meet HORCOs annual budget
of about $50,000 for clean water and sanitation
work in rural Ethiopia. A key value of HORCO
is its promise to use 100% of gifts received for
implementation of the work in Ethiopia.

Currently, there are more people in
rural Ethiopia without access to safe water and
sanitation than the total population of Canada!
HORCO is a volunteer-based, registered charity
(2008) actively working in rural Ethiopia
to change that reality. It works directly with
the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (EKHC)
Development Office to partner with rural
communities who have asked for help, and who
are committed to resource-sharing in order to
carry out the work and sustain the completed
facilities.

In the last six years, HORCO has
worked in an area just 80 km east of Addis
Ababa. We have provided resources to empower
12 villages, a small town and a school to help
over 20,000 people gain access to clean water
and learn sanitary practices. Where previously,
women and children spent hours every day
fetching dirty water, clean water is now within a
10-15 walk to the community water point. People

are developing hygienic habits, and the use of pit

latrines is cleaning up the environment. All of this
has the capacity to reduce the terrible toll of waterborne diseases, which in turn reduces medical
bills, enhances school attendance, improves food
security, frees up time for economic pursuits
(e.g., micro-financing) and in general leads to
poverty reduction.

One woman in the Kersa Villages said,
No one has ever shown us this kind of love as
the Kale Heywet Church. We are drinking clean
water. Our kids are healthy and even our animals
are healthy. God bless you. We are grateful for
our corporate sponsors and our faithful donors,
who enable us to help make a difference in this
area where >50,000 people are still waiting for
help, and there are no other NGOs working.
Our EKHC partner says, HORCO is a small
organization with a large footprint!

If you would like to learn more about
us or support our work, check out www.horco.
ca and/or like us on facebook.com/horcocanada.
If you would like to become involved with
promoting HORCOs work in the GTA, contact
bob@horco.ca or phone 519-649-0271. We would
love to see the Ethiopian Community partner with
us to help rural communities in Ethiopia. Perhaps
the Ethiopian Community could hold their own
fund-raising dinner in Toronto. Or, imagine this,
if every Ethiopian family in Toronto gave us
just $5 each year, we could double our work in
Ethiopia! We invite you to catch the vision, join
the team and spread the word. Together we can do
this.

As an immigration lawyer, I come across

many who had suffered abuses in their
countries. Many still continue to suffer
abuse in Canada. This months article is
about being courageous when we face
adversities.
My favourite definition of courage is by
dictionaryreference.com thus: the quality
of mind or spirit that enables a person to
face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without
fear; bravery.

To many of us, courage means different

things. Some lack the courage to leave
an abusive relationship. Some lack the
courage to embark on a new profession
or business. Some lack the courage to
express love to their partners. Some lack
the courage to be themselves. Some lack
the courage to admit mistakes. Some lack
the courage to be truthful. Some lack the
courage to simply say no. One can go on
and on about many decisions we all refuse
to take due to lack of courage.

and be courageous. Take the bold steps and

conquer your fear.

I am reminded of courage when I think

of the decision my mother took to leave a
relationship she knew would limit her and
her children and remain single. This was at
a time when it was not culturally acceptable
to be a single parent. I often think about
her fear, pain and the difficulty she faced.
I often remind myself of the struggles we
went through as children and her words of
encouragement to us: with hard work and
integrity, you will be successful.
Of course, you do not know my mother.
However, there are many of you reading this
that could relate with what she must have
gone though. Are you a single parent, new
immigrant, abandoned child, a struggling
parent, unemployed or underemployed etc
? Whatever your situation today, be strong

What giant is in your life as you read

this? You must be able to stand up against
the Goliath in your life: debt, abusive
relationship, unemployment, unhealthy
lifestyle, negative and unproductive
relationships, immigration issues etc.
It takes courage to: stop lying, leave an
abusive relationship (report abuses to the
Police if you are afraid to leave), have a
budget plan, regain your self-esteem, return
to school, embark on an employment plan,
eat healthy, attend to your marital needs,
stop being abusive, have integrity, start
a business, cut off some friends etc. My
friends, it takes courage and God to say
NO to the giants suppressing you and your
progress.

What Is Acupuncture ?
A Brief Introduction

Originating in China more than 3,000

years ago, acupuncture is one of the
oldest Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM) procedures. As an essential
part of TCM, acupuncture involves
the insertion of very thin, metallic
needles, (sometimes in conjunction
with electrical stimulus), on some
specific points (acupuncture points
or acupoints) of the body's surface.
The extreme thinness of the needles
ensures that little or no discomfort will
be experienced during the treatment.
At medical level, the insertion of these
very fine needles on the acupoints
influences the physiological functions
of the body, cures the diseases and
restores the health. (please refer to the
How Does Acupuncture Work section
for the theories of acupuncture).
Acupuncture is being widely accepted
as a supplementary healthcare service
to the mainstream health care system
across Canada. It has already been
regulated in British Columbia, Alberta
and Quebec. In Ontario, Traditional
Chinese Medicine Act, 2006, has been
passed by the provincial legislative
assembly in 2006. The transitional
council of the College of Traditional
Chinese
Medicine
Practitioners
and Acupuncturists of Ontario
(CTCMPAO) has been formed to
establish the regulation by-laws.
Please refer to http://www.ctcmpao.
on.ca for details.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Many researches have been done by
scientists about how acupuncture
works. The most widely accepted
theory is the energy theory called 'Qi'
in Chinese (pronounced as 'Chee').
In Chinese medicine, it is believed
that there is a universal life energy 'Qi'
in every living creature. This energy

is circulating in regulated patterns

throughout the body along specific
pathways that are called 'Meridians".
So far, 14 meridians have been
identified throughout human's body.
These meridians conduct the flow of
the vital energy 'Qi'. As long as this
energy flows freely throughout the
meridians, health is maintained. When
this flow is disrupted or blocked, then
pain and illness will occur, just like
rivers that are blocked and cause flood.
By inserting needles into the selected
points in the meridians, the normal
flow of the energy can be restored,
and thus the health brought back to the
body.
How Is The Treatment Carried Out?
In acupuncture, 10~30 very fine
needles are inserted into the
acupuncture points of body (called
"Shue Wei" in Chinese). The needles
are left in places for 20~30 minutes,
manipulated by hands or electrical
stimulations during the course of
treatment, producing a beneficial
effect on other related parts of the
body. The number of needles required
and the length of time needles left in
body depend on the problem and the
consultation with the acupuncturist.

Many of you are familiar with the story

of David and Goliath in the Bible. Could
you imagine what would have been going
through Davids mind as he prepared to
face Goliath? He knew he faced danger
and that pain could be inflicted on him.
Yet, courageously and knowing that God
was on his side, had stepped forward and
faced Goliath.

I recognize how difficult it is to face the

giants in your life. I encourage you my
friends, to take the first steps. Say NO to
your abusers while in a safe environment.
Pick up the phone and talk to someone
you trust about the issues you are
struggling with. Spend time with your
spouse and children. Be courageous to end
unproductive relationships. Go back to
school and do not be discouraged. Take the
right steps and regularize your immigration
status. Take the right steps and share love
and not war. Learn to smile and remind
yourselves that this day will pass.
Have courage my friends, and take the first
steps at the right direction. Remember that
a journey of a thousand miles starts with
the first steps. As you take those steps,
you will head in the right direction. Be
reminded that in our imperfection, we can
still take those steps. Good luck.

Boat With Ethiopian Migrants Sinks On Its Way To

Yemen, Killing At Least 70
By Sneha Shankar

migrants. Human traffickers are known

to overload rickety boats making for a
risky crossing over the Red Sea, Reuters
reported. According to an October report
by the United Nations Refugee Agency
(UNHCR), more than 200 people have died
at sea in 2014 alone while trying to reach
Yemen, which currently hosts 246,000
refugees from several countries.

At least 70 Ethiopians were killed when

a boat capsized off Yemens western
coast due to strong winds and rough seas,
officials said Sunday, according to The
Associated Press. The sinking, which
reportedly occurred on Saturday, happened

off the Red Sea port city of al-Makha.

The boat was bound for Yemen, which
typically acts as an entry point to wealthier
countries in the Middle East like Saudi
Arabia and Oman for poor East African

"There have been frequent reports of

mistreatment, abuse, rape and torture
and the increasingly cruel measures
being adopted by smuggling rings seem
to account for the increase in deaths at
sea," William Spindler, a spokesperson
for UNHCR said, according to the report,
adding: "We also call on countries of origin,

transit and destination in the region to step

up their cooperation in managing the flows
of migration. At the same time they must
pay due attention to the protection needs
of refugees, asylum-seekers and other
vulnerable groups such as women and
minors."
In October, 64 migrants and three crew
members travelling from Somalia died
when their vessel sank in the Gulf of Aden
between Somalia and Yemen, the UNHCR
report said. In June, 62 migrants and two
Yemeni crew members died when their
boat sank during a crossing in the Gulf
of Aden. In March, 42 migrants from
Africa died while attempting the passage,
according to Reuters.

THE ACME OF EVIL IGNORANCE: THE WEYYANE

PROJECT FOR ETHIOPIA AND THE WORLD
Mesfin Wolde-Mariam

Thirty to fifty years ago the
TWINS, the shabia and the weyyane
discovered that one of their formidable and
impregnable enemies was RECORDED
HISTORY. In their boundless ignorance
they believed they could wipe out
RECORDED HISTORY by destroying
the books on Ethiopia. They started their
destructive campaign in London and
Washington DC. The University of London
and the Library of Congress were, I believe,
their first targets. This is a consequence
mainly attributable to IGNORANCE.

Now that the TWINS are
presumably incontestably in power they
have resumed their campaign of destruction
of accumulated knowledge. In Ethiopia the
campaign started with the libraries in the

Catholic Churches, The Municipality of

Addis Abeba and perhaps in less known
other organizations. Priceless books in
these institutions and organizations were
sold dirt-cheap by weight! Fortunately for
Ethiopia their ignorance when combined
with their greed led to a consequence
partially opposite to their desired purpose
of total destruction. Although some books
were bought by those who would destroy
them, some were also bought by those
would preserve them.

Now the weyyane possessed by
ignorance and greed attacked the most
important treasure of the country: THE
ETHIOPIAN NATIONAL LIBRARY. The
ancient books in this library were sold at
a price of ten Birr (US $0.50) per kilo. Is

this not a crime against humanity? Are the

Western Powers free from this crime? Does
this not demonstrate the TOTALITARIAN
TYRANNY under which the Ethiopian
people live? Is this not a war against
knowledge, against science? Is this not a
war against human progress? Is this not a
childish attempt to start Ethiopian, indeed
Human, history like animals from zero? Is
this not a solid proof for the fact that there
are no universities in Ethiopia?

Jean Paul Sartre emphatically
explains that every generation of all animals
starts from zero with no accumulated
experience to guide it. The weyyane project
is to reduce all Ethiopians to their level of
ignorance; however they fail to realize the
universality of knowledge and science.
Therefore, while they have American
dollars, European Euros and English
Pounds as well as Western war machines,
they may believe they will succeed in
keeping Ethiopians ignorant. Add to this the
stifling of freedom of expression, internet,
newspapers and other free and independent
media there is surely a tremendous weight
of ignorance on them; but they are not
giving up the pursuit of knowledge. In
fact the Project-Ignorance of the weyyane
has become a challenge for Ethiopians

to know more about themselves and the

world. Today, thanks to the weyyane and
the Derg there is inhabited continent where
Ethiopians are not found.

Most of all the Weyyane Project
forgets or ignores the fact that Ethiopia
was a symbol of FREEDOM AND
INDEPENDENCE and a BEACON OF
HOPE as well as an INSPIRATION OF
COURAGE. A proud history of a proud
people standing solidly for thousands of
years has been reduced to a mere collection
of tribes who were forcefully united by
Minilik. The Weyyane Project ignores or
forgets the tumultuous Sixteen Century that
brought challenges which the Ethiopian
people converted into opportunities. It is
these challenges and opportunities that
shaped present-day Ethiopia. The Weyyane
Project has no notion about the resilience
of the Ethiopian people. If the weyyane live
to regret their ignorance and their stupidity,
they will witness the rise of Ethiopia with
vengeance!

The above photographs of the
covers of some of these priceless books
are only a small sample of the consequence
of the Weyyane Project making money by
selling cheaply these books by weight.

Disagreements between Egypt and Ethiopia over the Dam Study

could not be held due to disagreements,
Bizuneh Tolcha, a senior official
with the Ethiopian Ministry of Water,
Energy and Irrigation, told The Anadolu
Agency.

The experts panel recommended that

two studies get conducted one on
the hydrological simulation model
and another on a trans-boundary
environmental, economic and social
impact assessment, which led to the
creation of the TNC by the three
countries to get those studies done.
Ababa, 15 December 2014 (WIC)
- Consultations among experts of
Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt aimed at
determining the impact of Ethiopias
$4.8 billion dam project on the Niles
upper reaches halted amid differences
between Egypt and Ethiopia, an official
said Sunday.
The Tripartite National Committee

(TNC) a 12-member experts

panel responsible of facilitating
implementation of recommendations
of the International Panel of Experts
concerning Ethiopias hydroelectric dam
project had so far held two working
sessions in Addis Ababa and Cairo.
The third session was supposed to be
held in Khartoum on December 4-6, but

During the last two meetings, the three

countries, according to Tolcha, were
able to produce a list of seven firms, out
of which only one would be selected to
conduct the studies.
Each country was supposed to come
up with its proposals that comprise
technical evaluation of the firms, but
during a preparatory conference in

Cairo on November 4, a disagreement

occurred as to the points to be included
in the studies, Tolcha said, declining to
give further details.
The matter has since been referred to the
relevant ministers of the three countries
so that they resolve the matter, he said.
Though minor, that disagreement has
come as a stumbling block against the
progress of the tripartite talks.
The two countries agreed to resume
tripartite talks which also included
downstream country Sudan after
Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam
Desalegn and Egypts President AbdelFattah al-Sisi met in Equatorial Guinea
in June.
According to the original schedule,
the TNC should meet in Addis Ababa
on December 16 to select the firm to
conduct the two studies.

Remembering the Anuak Massacre

TZTA: Page 24: December 2014: tzta@bellnet.ca / info@tzta.ca / www.tzta.ca.: Follow us on Facebook & Twitter

NA Post | December 13th, 2014

This year, members of the Ethiopian community in the Greater Houston, Texas, have sent a significant gift of
encouragement to the Anuak who have been uprooted from their land and homes.
(Vancouver, BC, Canada) December 13,
2014 will mark the 11-year anniversary
of the horrific massacre of 424 Ethiopians
of Anuak ethnicity in Gambella, Ethiopia.
Even though it has been over a decade, it
still seems like yesterday to the Anuak, especially to those who lost members of their
families. Some of the victims remain in unmarked mass graves. The Anuak as well as
the other people in the region have never
really recovered from this traumatic tragedy, let alone the fact that no justice has
been done.
Part of the reason for this is that the lives
and livelihoods of the people surviving the
tragedy have been in turmoil ever since.
Seventy-eight thousand Anuak and others
in Gambella have been forcibly evicted
from their ancestral land in order to lease
the land to foreign investors and TPLF/
EPRDF regime cronies. The Anuak have
never been consulted or compensated as
would be done in a country where there
was a rule of law.
Those who survived the 2003 massacre
and the following three years of destruction, harassment, and human rights abuses,
only had temporary relief before the TPLF/
EPRDF began a master plan to remove
them from their homes and land. Those
that resisted quickly discovered that their
lives were in danger. Those that complied,
found it nearly impossible to survive in the
resettlement sites designated to them by
the regime due to inferior land, difficult
access to water and absent services. Many
were forced to leave Ethiopia in order to
save their lives. They are now living in refugee camps in South Sudan and Kenya. Yet
the ethnic apartheid regime of the TPLF/

EPRDF continues to round up Anuak men

in Gambella who are now in prison in Addis Ababa. With all of these actions, these
past eleven years have been some of the
most painful for the Anuak.
Today, December 13, 2014 these Anuak
refugees and other Anuaks throughout the
world, namely in Europe, United States
of America, Canada and Australia will be
holding a memorial service to commemorate this tragedy. As they remember what
took place at mid-day eleven years ago and
as they reflect on the needless loss of the
lives of their loved ones, it will rekindle
much emotion.
Widows will try to describe what fathers,
brothers, sisters, or other relatives were
like to their now grown children and try to
explain how a regime that is supposed to
protect its citizens could do such a horrible thing to their own people. It is difficult
enough when you are in a stable environment, but it is all the more difficult being
in a refugee camp, trying to find ways to
move on with such few resources.

In the midst of this darkness, out of the

hearts of the Ethiopian community in the
greater Houston Area, has come an unexpected source of hope and encouragementa large monetary gift to help the
Anuak who have been displaced. In their
letter of explanation they say: We would
like to kindly request that this small token
be allocated to our fellow Ethiopians that
have been uprooted from their land and
homes by some greedy land grabbers who
have little to no regard to their fellow mankind.

LETTERS

Fire Fantino for his shameful

treatment of Canada's veterans

was given bonuses not for better treatment, but

for slashing services and staff.
Its no surprise that such reductions stymied
veterans access to critically needed services.
According to the Auditor General, many with
mental health issues had to wait months, even
years to get the psychological help they need.
On top of that, the government has failed to hire
the mental health personnel for those serving in
the Forces today that it committed to years ago.
Delayed and denying mental health services has
all too tragic consequences, up to and including
suicide, which claimed the lives of more Canadian Forces personnel than the conflict in Afghanistan, during the same time period.

Joyce Murray| MP Vancouver Quadra

Liberal Party of Canada Defence Critic
Dear Editor,
It is now abundantly clear that the care provided
to our veterans, who stood ready to give their all
for our country, has been shameful under Minister Julian Fantino.
The Conservative government claims its cuts
to the Veterans Affairs Department were to the
back office and did not affect front line services.
Yet nearly a quarter of the departments staff
nearly one thousand people have been eliminated; the vast majority coming from branches
that support disability benefits, pensions, health
and rehabilitation. Nine specialized veterans
service centres were closed. Over a billion dollars in veterans programming was approved by
Parliament, but left unspent by the Conservative government in recent years. Management

Instead of addressing these challenges head on,

Minister Fantino left the country. Instead of allowing the situation to be fully considered in
the Veteran Affairs Committee, the government
shut it down.
At a private company, negligence on this scale
would cause management to be sacked. Its high
time that the Prime Minister wake up, fire this
incompetent Minister and start giving our veterans nothing less than the best of care and support from a grateful nation.
Yours sincerely,
Joyce Murray

The funds will be divided between Anuak

in refugee camps in South Sudan and Kenya and Anuak in Gambella. The Anuak Justice Council (AJC) has chosen to distribute
the funds to both refugee camps in conjunction with the December 13th memorial
gatherings in both camps; but in Gambella,
no commemoration is allowed, other than
privately, so we are still working out the
best way to distribute the funds.

Mr. Ochalla Abulla, Chairman of the Anuak Justice Council (AJC) was very moved
by this generosity, This gift has been a
tremendous encouragement to the people
in the camps, but what these Ethiopians
did when they reached out to the Anuak
should now be an example to all of us, including the Anuak, to reach out to others
beyond their ethnic groups. The impact of
this could be huge and could inspire us as a
nation to help our peoplenot only those
from our own groups. There are some other examples of Ethiopians who are already
doing this. Some Ethiopians have formed
small groups of five members who all contribute $20 a month to support the family
of some of our Ethiopian political prisoners who used to be the breadwinners of
their families.
AJC Vice Chairman, Mr. Ojulu Lero, added his thoughts, This gesture is reconciliation in itself! These people have reached
out to the Anuak and now the Anuak can
reach out to other people like the Majangir or the Oromo who can reach out to the
Amhara or Tigray who can reach out to
the Southerners or the Afar and so forth. It
reminds me of the recent SMNE forum in
Washington D.C. that encourages us to talk
to each other rather than about each other.

In this case, these Ethiopians from Houston helped others rather than only helping
themselves. If we all follow this model of
action, it will be another way to unify the
Ethiopian people. Once the people are unified, the leaders will be more unified.
As the Anuak in South Sudan and Kenya
come together on December 13, 2014, they
will know they are not alone. They will
be thinking of those fellow Ethiopians far
away who have torn down a wall of isolation through their gift of love. These funds
will be put to good use, but the impact of
it will live on as building blocks to a New
Ethiopia. The power of love can break the
walls of hostility and division like nothing
else.
May the actions of these and other Ethiopians like them, inspire our people to reach
out to others with love, humility, and generosity. May God deeply comfort the Anuak during this time of remembrance of the
massacre of December 13-15, 2003 as well
as all Ethiopians who have lost loved ones
over these past years at the hands of the
TPLF/EPRDF. May He also bring freedom
to all political prisoners from every region
throughout the country who are locked up
simply for trying to bring justice and freedom to Ethiopia.

Economic growth set to

decline year-after-year

Dear Editor,

Buried in the federal governments fall

fiscal update was some major news:
economic growth in Canada will decline
year-after-year for the next five years.
Let me say that again: from 2015 to 2019,
growth will decline each and every year.
Faced with this sad prognosis, the
Conservatives are putting all their eggs
in the income splitting basket, a plan that
will consume $2.4 billion borrowed dollars
this year and $2 billion every year going
forward, squeezing out room for a growth
agenda.
The Conservative income splitting policy
is unfair: it does nothing for 85% of
Canadians. And for 15% who do benefit,
the largest gains go to the wealthiest.
Single moms and dads, parents with similar
incomes within the same tax bracket, those
on low incomes, those without children
or whose kids are at the expensive postsecondary levelall get nothing from
Income Splitting.
Income splitting is too expensive, its
unfair and its anti-growth at a time when
growth is what Canadians need.
Instead of lavishing benefits on those who
need them the least, we need to help our
economy expand and give all Canadians
a real and fair chance at success. Two key

elements of that agenda are infrastructure

and education.
Investments in infrastructure will create
jobs today and lay the foundations for
greater prosperity tomorrow. By helping
our cities build durable tools like better
transit and water systems, we will reduce
traffic gridlock and give a substantial and
sustainable boost our productivity and
quality of life.
Seven out of ten future new jobs in Canada
will require post-secondary education. If
we can raise our post-secondary education
attainment rate to 70 percent, well have
a workforce ready to meet our future job
market needs.
We dont have to settle for gradual
economic decline. Investments in
education and infrastructure are two
essential components for the prosperity of
our middle class and our collective future.
Yours sincerely,
John McCallum, MP
Liberal Party of Canada

Ethnic Council Celebrates The Holidays

Ontario and Quebec Call On the Federal

Government to Join In Building Canada's Economy

Today in Ottawa, Ontario and Quebec Finance Ministers made the case to the federal government that the time is right to make
additional investments in public infrastructure to support job creation and economic
growth in Canada.

By Samuel Getachew
With an appropriate motto of Canadas
other voices, The National Ethnic
Press and Media Council of Canada,
celebrated the holidays with the likes
of Mayor John Tory, Premier Kathleen
Wynne in attendance, Toronto Deputy
Police Chief Peter Slowly, civic
and elected leaders, members of the
diplomatic communities as well as
royalties from Ghana in attendance.
With an over flowing capacity of
attendees and special guest at a
banquet hall in Thorncliffe Park, the
President of the council, Thomas
Saras, reinstated the importance of
the ethnic media in Canada and why it
continues to need help for it to grow
and prosper. With memberships of 750
media groups and personalities among
its members, Mr. Saras, repeated how
a multicultural country like Canada
is still in need of the services of its
members and why government should

give them the support they deserve by

advertising in its pages.
Newly elected mayor of Toronto, John
Tory, also celebrated the works of the
community and asked them to join him
in making the city fair and equitable
for all. Deputy Chief, Peter Slowly,
also echoed the theme of the speech
and described how much the ethnic
media is needed to make the police
force reflective of the multicultural
city and also to have the force become
more engaged and accountable to all of
its residents.
The evening ended on a high note
with beautiful dances from Brazil and
a special dance performances from
an Ashanti Prince and Princess from
Ghana. The Premier went to every
table to greet the hundreds of guests
and pose for pictures.

Ontario and Quebec are encouraged by the

federal government's recognition of the
critical role infrastructure plays in building Canada's economy. Together, they
urged the federal government to increase
its funding for provincial-territorial public
infrastructure in its upcoming 2015 budget
to build a stronger economic union. Provinces and territories are doing their part by
making the significant, forward-looking
investments necessary to build Canada up.
Provinces and territories currently invest
about three times as much as the federal
government in public infrastructure. De-

spite this, the federal government receives

almost an equal share of the revenue generated from these investments. A federal
commitment to partner with provinces and
territories to increase investments in public
infrastructure would address this misalignment and will boost Canada's economic
potential.
The economic case for greater support for
infrastructure is strong, supported by business and municipal leaders, and well documented by third parties.
The federal government has the fiscal room
to make these necessary investments. Finance Canada's own long-term economic
and fiscal projections demonstrate that the
federal government is fiscally sustainable
over the next decades. The evidence is
clear, and the time to act is now.
