oming off an improved 2010 when most coatings companies began to experience recovery, 2011 continued the trend toward regaining nancial ground from
the economic downturn across most markets and regions. While most of the
paint companies proled in this years Top Companies Report (page 40) posted positive
sales growth over 2010, full recovery to pre-recession levels is still likely a few years
away. Still it is a very positive sign that overall protability was restored in most companies and the industry is again growing outside the mature markets while also continuing to invest in the R&D pipeline.
Several companies are gone from this years report including Denmarks Dyrup, acquired by PPG; South Africas Freeworld Coatings, acquired by Kansai Paint; South Koreas
SSCP, acquired by AkzoNobel; and Chinas Yips Chemical, which did not meet sales revenue criteria. As high growth markets continue to redene the dynamics of all manufacturing-based industries, domestic suppliers in these regions continue to gain prominence on
the world stage. In this years report we say hello for the rst time to several companies:
Betek (Turkey); Taiho Paint (China); Kapci Coatings (Egypt); and PACHIN (Egypt).
In 2011, the global coatings market hit about $100 billion. Building decorative coatings
accounted for nearly 50 percent of the total market, the most among all coatings. Vehicle
coating presents the second largest application area, making up roughly 15 percent, of
which, oE and renish coatings occupying about 50 percent and 45 percent respectively. Protective and marine coating represents the third largest application eld, accounting for about 12 percent. General industrial coating makes up roughly 10 percent,
followed by powder coating, wood coating, coil coating, packaging coating, etc.
Geographically, China topped the world in terms of infrastructure and real estate investment, and helping make it the worlds largest coating market, worth about $18.9
billion in 2011, 54 percent of which was attributable to decorative coatings. From Jan.
to Sep. 2011, domestic real estate investment increased 32 percent year-over-year. During the ve-year period (2011-2015), the Chinese government plans to complete 36 million suites of affordable housing. While China is the worlds largest coating market, its
domestic coating enterprises are small-scale. The number of domestic coating companies
surpasses 2,500 while their revenue together only accounts for 11 percent of the Chinese
coating market. Among them, Guangdong Carpoly Chemical Co., Ltd. is the largest.
With 2011 revenue of $325,000 million it ranks number 43 on this years list.
AkzoNobel is once again at the top of this years diverse list of companies. It is the worlds
largest coating manufacturer with the most complete product line. AkzoNobel is well-known
for its Dulux paint in China which occupied the second largest share in the Chinese market
and ranked No.1 in the real estate pre-decoration area. A lot of the top coating enterprises
are century-old ones, and DuPont and Valspar have a history of more than 200 years. BASF,
DuPont, PPG, Kansai, DAW and KCC attach a lot of importance to automotive coatings.
Sherwin-Williams maintains more than 3,000 paint chain stores in the United States, while
runner-up AkzoNobel only has roughly 500 chain stores. Valspar, Sika, Comex, Masco and
Asian Paints focus on the building eld and have their own advantages. For instance, Sika specializes in waterproof coatings for roofs. Valspar is the controlling company of Guangdong
Huarun Paints, one of the largest coating manufacturers in China. Asian Paints is the largest
Indian paint company. Jotun, Chugoku and Hempel are the magnates of marine coatings
while Beckers is skilled in coil coating and RPM specializes in general industrial coating.
I hope you enjoy learning about these companies and many others in much more detail.

EZ-Prime Premium Exterior
Wood Primer
Dunn-Edwards has improved its EZ-Prime
Premium Exterior Wood Primer, an exterior acrylic primer touted for its adhesion,
hide, enamel holdout and tannin stain resistance on woods that are subject to stain
bleeding. The new and improved EZ-Prime
Premium still provides adhesion to wood,
and now its tannin stain resistance is improved, making it an ideal primer for
woods such as redwood, cedar, T1-11 siding, exterior plywood, doors, windows,
trim and fences the company said. The
resin used in its formulation provides better tannin stain resistance by either blocking out or locking in the tannins present in
the wood so that it does not bleed through
to the nish coats. EZ-Prime Premium is
eco-friendly, ethylene glycol (EG)-free and
produced in the companys LEED Goldcertied paint manufacturing plant. EZPrime Premium is ultra-low VOC at 50

instant adhesives Loctite 406 and Loctite 454 can likewise withstand elevated temperatures of up to 120 C. Loctite 406 is particularly suited
to the bonding of rubber, plastics and elastomers. Following surface
treatment of with the polyolefin primer Loctite 770, even substrates
made from polyethylene, polypropylene and polytetrafluoroethylene
(PTFE) can adhesive-bonded. This clear, transparent product reaches its
initial fixture strength within two to ten seconds.
The multi-purpose instant bonding gel
Loctite 454 is a general-purpose instant bonding gel that does not drip,
making it ideal for applications on vertical and overhead surfaces. It
will bond paper, wood, cork, foam, leather, cardboard, metals and plastics.
Until now its service temperature lay between 40 C and +80 C.
Now, with the improved formulation of Loctite 454, service temperatures of up to 120 C are likewise possible, which means a huge expansion in the range of applications for which the gel is suitable, not
to mention the boost in confidence that naturally occurs where the
service temperatures are at or around the previous limit of 80 C.
Quick and easy production upgrades
Customers can continue using their already installed dispensing
equipment to apply the new adhesives. Conversions take no time at
all as the product containers are unchanged. Consequently, new applications can also be implemented with all three products without
problem.
Loctite 401 and Loctite 406 are available in 20 gram, 50 gram and
500 gram bottles, while Loctite 454 instant adhesive gel is sold in tubes
of 3, 20 and 300 grams.

espite the booming prots of TiO2 producers in Europe, they still want to diversify their portfolio into speciality

This switch into specialities is causing concern among Europes coatings producers at a

These anxieties have been heightened after

Analyzing value
stages and types
of value.
www.coatingsworld.com
July 2012
Stages of Value Shift, we took the Slywotzky Flow Chart and plugged in some of
the familiar technologies in the coatings and
adhesives industries.
Within this chart space we can see just
a few examples of Business Technologies
in our industry. When considering the
www.coatingsworld.com
Business Corner
Value Inow sector to the left we can understand that successful technologies such
as ultra-thin, porosity lling, quick curing
semi-structural nano-coatings will initially
enjoy limited competition, high growth
and exceptionally high prots. This was
and is also the case for PPGs PowerPrime
2- Coat Auto E-Coat system that replaced
a signicant portion of the labor content
in some auto plants by, in many cases, displacing itself in the process.
We can also observe that E-Coat in
non-auto applications has shifted (right)
into the Value Stability sector but, is on
the far right portion. This shows that
competition is getting stronger, while
margins and market shares are stable for
the time being. Note that coil coatings
occupy a precarious position, teetering
on the edge of the Value Stability/ Value
Outflow sectors.
The Value Outow sector is where talent, resources, and customers leave at an accelerating rate. Such is the case for several
technologies. Powder coatings, one-coat ECoat and Auto Sealants are examples of
such technologies that are far into the mature range of the Life Cycle accompanied
by all the negative trappings
such as extremes in low margins, great numbers of competitors, slow to no growth,
and new technologies replacing them.
This Value Shift approach and other models
can be tools to quickly understand where you and
your competition ts within
the market spaces you covet
and more importantly, help
you see the dynamic potential shifts and movements
within it. By mapping out
the potential shifts, one can
then develop several strategies and sometimes tactics
that will both counter competitors and compliment
your own advancements.

portfolio, particularly in led but unpublished patent applications that would disclose trade secrets upon their publication,
and suggest options as how to proceed for
optimal intellectual property protection.
Such an evaluation would likely include in
depth interviews with your inventors,
trade secret creators, corporate counsel,
managers, and IT, security and human resources personnel to help delineate the
separation of your IP into the two categories, and honing your procedures for
keeping the two separate and secure.
Clearly auditing both types of assets will
also allow their application in determining your businesss value and enhancing
your balance sheet.
Though an open review of security
procedures will often identify weak areas
for improvement, a more stringent test
can be applied. A professional trade secret
audit may include a mystery employee
hired to work at a company to see if trade
secrets, whether access was given to the
employ or not, can be downloaded,
copied, emailed, obtained in conversation,
or otherwise removed from secure locations, and the effectiveness of the procedures in place to prevent or determine if a
security breach occurs. If someone suspects that a colleague has misappropriated
July 2012
materials, who do they report their concerns to that person who would be in
charge of the investigation? Given the
technical nature of such trade secrets, the
mystery employee will be selected by
the audit rm to possess the necessary education and work experience to be placed
in a position where access to trade secrets
would be granted.
Once the audit is complete and improvements made, the security procedures in place and documentation of the
audit itself are evidence for use in court
of the reasonable efforts you use to
protect your trades secrets. Why is this of
value to you? When the dark day occurs
that you run to court to prevent use of a
misappropriated trade secret, you will
need as much evidence as possible preprepared for immediate use in arguing
that preliminary injunction to stop the
thiefs use of it that day is appropriate to
protect your interests. The case you make
for this type of suit is usually built on circumstantial rather than direct proof of
misappropriation. And, obtaining a preliminary injunction is generally considered by courts as extraordinary relief
which means the burden is on you, the
applicant/plaintiff, to convince the judge
in short order of: 1. the likelihood that
the applicant will prevail on the merits at
the final hearing; and 2. the extent to
which the plaintiffs are being irreparably
harmed by the conduct complained of.
From some past court cases, you must
first meet the burden of these two points
before the court considers other factors
used in issuing an injunction. Regarding
point one, remember, a trade secret must
be a secret, and all that evidence of secrecy protection will help in establishing
the quality of the case you will make at
the final hearing. And, when asking for
preliminary injunctive relief, an unexplained delay can fatally damage your
assertion of irreparable harm (criteria
2 above, and generally the most important), so spending a week to document
your secrecy procedures after the fact is
not a good plan.
The other criteria considered by the
court includes: 3. the extent to which the
defendants will suffer irreparable or
greater harm if the preliminary injuncJuly 2012
tion is issued; and 4. whether the injunction serves the public interest. Given that
injunctive relief may impose some pretty
stiff economic disruptions on the defendant, such as in the case of preventing a

uPont Performance Coatings (DPC) is the worlds leading motor vehicle coatings supplier. Products offered include high performance liquid and powder coatings for
motor vehicle OEMs, the motor vehicle after-market and general industrial applications, such as coatings for heavy equipment, pipes and appliances and electrical insulation.
Nearly half of DPCs $4.281bn of revenue in 2011 came
from the auto renish segment while auto OEM turned in
roughly 30 percent of sales. The remaining sales were split between liquid and powder coatings segments serving general industrial applications. Sales were up from $3.8bn when
compared to prior year.
After-market coatings products are marketed using the
DuPont Standox , Spies Hecker, Cromax Pro and Nason brand
names. Standox , Spies Hecker and Cromax Pro are focused on
the high-end motor vehicle after-markets, while Nason is primarily focused on economy coating applications. The segment
has several large customers, primarily in the motor vehicle OEM
industry supply chain.
Performance Coatings segment sales outside the U.S. accounted for 75 percent of the segment's total sales in 2011.
The segment experienced continued recovery with auto
builds across the globe increasing three percent in 2011, primarily driven by an improvement of nine percent in North America. Volume growth primarily reects increased demand for
OEM motor vehicle coatings and industrial coatings, particularly in the North American heavy-duty truck market.
During the year Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) launched
its nationwide Nissan Certied Collision Repair Network, a new
certication program open to both dealer-owned and independent collision shops. Nissan teamed up with DuPont Performance
Coatings to assist in the implementation of the programs certication process and I-CAR, the Inter-Industry Conference on
Auto Collision Repair, to conduct technician training. Once a facility has successfully completed the application process, the shop
manager will be contacted to set up a meeting to review the enrollment and inspect the facility. A DPC representative will conduct a comprehensive inspection of the facility to ensure that all
standards will be met. For participating collision shops, the Nissan Certied Collision Repair Network delivers the opportunity

In 2011 BASF Coatings saw its sales rise above 2010 levels
due to higher volume and prices to $3.956 billion. Broken down
regionally, 42 percent of BASF Coatings sales came from Europe while 28 percent came from South America, Africa and the
Middle East, with the largest chunk from South America. Asia
Pacic and North America are smaller markets for BASF Coatings with 17 percent and 13 respectively. Asia Pacic is growing
the fastest of all regions.
BASF said demand for its products grew in all business areas.
The favorable market environment in the global automotive industry, higher demand in South America and its strong business
with coatings solutions in Russia made a signicant contribution
to sales growth.
Its business with automotive coatings was very successful due
to growing demand from its customers in Europe and Asia, especially in China. Sales in the automotive renish coatings business also grew due to new customers and price increases.
BASF achieved a signicant increase in sales volumes of coatings for transportation and agricultural machinery. In Europe, the
company beneted from strong demand for coil coatings from
the Russian steel industry. Due to new customers in emerging
markets, sales volumes of coatings for wind turbines also grew.
In the decorative paints business area, sales were higher than
in the previous year, particularly in South America. In this region, BASF said it not only experienced greater consumer demand, it was also able to gain additional market share with
product innovations and targeted advertising measures.
BASF Coatings said during the year it plans to sell in the nearterm the decorative paints business of Relius Coatings GmbH &

markets in Asia and parts of the Middle East said the company.
The company reported revenues of $1.902 billion in 2011, up from

n 2011, Kelly-Moore Paint Company, Inc. introduced Enviro Coat Reective 1545, one of the industrys rst commercially produced architectural coatings designed to reect
the suns radiant heat, according to the company. This eco-functional, exterior 100 percent acrylic eggshell paint lowers external wall temperature, allowing homeowners and building
operators to minimize air conditioning usage and save money
on utility bills. When applied to vertical outside walls, Enviro
Coat Reective deects a portion of the suns radiant heat away
from the building. Its infrared-reective technology employs pigments preventing infrared radiant heat from absorbing into the
lm and wall thus keeping exterior walls cooler. This technology
has been used in the roof-coating industry, but is now being applied to outside walls. Also in 2011 Kelly-Moore opened a new

Re-chargeable Coatings:
Innovative Approach
to Functionalizationon-Demand
By Juan Carvajal, Matt Schwausch, Steve
McDaniel, Jon Hurt, Melinda Wales*
Reactive Surfaces, USA;
Abstract
Functionality is the most recent advancement in coatings technology that adds signicantly to the traditional role of a coatings system. Natural biomaterials, such as proteins and peptides,
provide an enormous resource of functional additives that are
non-persistent in the environment, non-toxic and renewable.
Biomolecules, such as peptides, antibodies and receptors, have
provided many distinct non-catalytic activities in natural environments. By focusing on the unique and specic binding properties of these non-catalytic molecules, biobased additives are
being created which will provide a new and innovative function
to coatings systems: recharge-ability. Being able to change or
renew a biocide or other functionality, without recoating adds a
new dimension to the coated surface. The current state of research in the development of biomaterials for functional coatings, including antifouling and antimicrobial surfaces, with
specic examples of recharging will be presented.
82 | Coatings World
In its most simple embodiment, the concept of a rechargeable coating can be a cross-linked polymer or copolymer that would absorb
a target molecule, release it under specied conditions and remain receptive to re-absorption of the target [1]. Nature has provided a
large number of molecules that already perform highly efcient small
molecule recognition and/or catalysis. These molecules, such as enzymes, antibodies and membrane receptors are molecular machines
that can contain a combination of small molecule binding, transport,
release, and/or catalytic functionalities. Current approaches in material science involve mimicking natural molecules to create articial
receptors and molecularly imprinted polymers that have a release/reabsorption property. Articial receptors are typically created by imprinting binding sites or receptor structures within a polymeric
surface, thus creating the ability to selectively and reversibly bind
molecules of interest. A target molecule is employed as a template
around which interacting and cross-linking monomers are polymerized to form a block that contains a number of cavities each with a
template molecule inside (Fig. 1). The resulting binding sites are complementary to Fig 1. A target molecule serves as a template around
which a cross-linked polymeric material forms a number of hollows
conformed to the target molecule. the target molecule in size and
shape [2]. After polymerization, the template is removed and the
binding sites that have been imprinted on the polymer are capable
of selectively rebinding to the target molecule.
Monomers with vinyl or acrylic groups are most commonly
polymerized and cross-linked to form imprinted material or arti-

Re-chargeable Coatings: A
Biobased Approach to Creating
Dynamically Functional
Coatings
There are many unique mechanisms developed in nature for metal absorption, accumulation or resistance. Currently, about
40% of all known proteins contain a liganded metal, Meq+ [5], which performs a
plethora of essential tasks from protein
structure stabilization and enzyme catalysis
to photosynthesis and respiration. Metal
ions such as Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Zn2+,
Mn2+, Ni2+, Cu+/2+, Fe2+/3+, and
Co2+/3+ are most frequently found to bind
to proteins via one or more metal-binding
domains under physiological conditions
[6,7]. Most metal-binding proteins (metalloproteins) bind a given metal with
specicity [12]. Using recombinant DNA
techniques, it is possible to create proteinbased biomaterials with both metal-binding and tunable properties that can be used
to selectively catch-and-release heavy
metals from environmental sources. These
biomaterials are environmental friendly, requiring no toxic chemicals for their synthesis, are easily produced in mass quantity.
The use of metal-binding domains of proteins has signicant advantages over chemical or polymeric chelators, including
higher specicity and afnity for selected
metals described above. The potential
lower limit for successful heavy metal binding from a dilute source of the metal in solution can be as low as approximately
Coatings World | 83

Re-chargeable Coatings
10-10 M, or in the parts per trillion, depending on the specic metal-binding domain employed [8].
Two common classes of metal binding
peptides are metallothioneins and phytochelatins [8-10]. Both of these are cysteine-rich peptides that bind divalent metal
ions through sulfhydryl groups (-SH). Metallothioneins are typically formed in mammals, plants and microorganisms in
response to the presence of cadmium [11].
Related proteins that are structurally similar can be associated with metal ions like
zinc, copper and cadmium [10]. Phytochelatin peptides are produced by enzymatic synthesis in fungi, algae, and some
prokaryotic organisms, worms, and plants
to bind heavy metals such as Ag+, As3+,
Cd2+, Cu+/2+, Hg2+ Ni2+, or Zn2+.
Peptides with unique metal binding
properties can either be pulled from nature, designed de novo or selected by
screening libraries. His6 is an example of
a peptide designed from a template in nature, and which can be used to functionalize metal binding coatings. (Fig 2)
Nickel generally provides good binding efciency to His6, but also tends to bind
nonspecically to endogenous proteins
that contain histidine clusters. Cobalt
ions, and even more so copper ions, exhibit a more specic interaction with histidine tags, resulting in less nonspecic
interaction. The research presented here
demonstrates that it is possible to selectively and reversibly bind metals to a coating containing metal binding peptides,
thus granting the coating anti-fouling and
anti-microbial properties.

Re-chargeable Coatings
Summary
This study demonstrates that it is possible
to create re-chargeable coatings for metal
ions used as antifouling agents. This platform technology will be used to create antimicrobial coatings that use metals as a
deterrent for biological growth. Our experience with other natural peptides that are
not toxic to the environment suggests these
metal-binding peptides can be used as
drop in additives for a coating to imbue
it with these functionalities. Peptides can
be chosen to interact with and bind to specic metals, to change these metals at will,
and to use combinations of metals or peptides with increasingly larger binding coefcients, making the system programmable.
When a specic metal binding peptide is
chosen, an assessment of the polymer system can be performed to optimize the performance of the peptide. Since metals are
so abundantly found in seawater, they can
be utilized by marine coatings to prevent biological growth from occurring without
adding metal ions to the environment (Fig
6). These approaches should reduce the reg-
