You Asked for It, You Got It

This month Coatings World is announcing a number of exciting changes.
We pride ourselves on listening and responding to reader feedback, and we
regularly commission independent readership studies by outside research
firms to get unbiased feedback. In a recent readership survey, a number of
participants suggested that while they are big fans of our market and business reports they would like to see Coatings World publish more technical
papers. Well you asked for it, and starting in September, Coatings World
will be publishing one technical paper a month. These papers will be vetted
by our newly appointed technical editor and will need to meet a number
of requirements. We will be posting the details on all our social media accounts in the coming weeks. Please feel free to email me with any questions.
Two Industry Veterans Join the Coatings World Team

Coatings World is pleased to welcome Donna Campbell and Darlene
Brezinski to our team. Campbell will be joining Coatings World as an advertising sales representative. She has 35 years of publishing experience,
beginning her career at Technical Publishing Company as a field editor
for Highway & Heavy Construction magazine. From there she moved
into advertising sales roles for Irving Cloud Publishing and eventually East
Coast sales manager at BNP Media. Most recently she served as group publisher at BNP Media, directing Paint & Coatings Industry (PCI), Adhesives
& Sealants (ASI) and Ceramic Industry magazines. She is highly skilled
in both print and digital media sales. During the 23 years with BNP
Media she also assisted in launching the Coatings Trends & Technologies
(CTT) conference, and is also involved in the Southern Society for Coatings
Technology (SSCT), the Chicago Society of Coatings Technology (CSCT),
and the Philadelphia Society for Coatings Technology (PSCT).
Darlene Brezinkski, Ph.D. is a highly regarded expert in the field of
coatings and will serve as Coatings Worlds technical editor, a newly created position. A chemistry and biology graduate of Mundelein College in
Chicago, Dr. Brezinski earned both her Masters Degree and Ph.D. in chemistry from Iowa State University. She has served as an assistant professor at
Mundelein and as chair of the chemistry department. She has held a variety
of positions at DeSoto, Inc. including technical manager of chemical and
instrumental analysis and director of analytical and computer applications
research. In addition, she served as president of Consolidated Research,
Inc. Most recently she served as technical editor of PCI.

PPG to Acquire IVC Industrial Coatings
PG Industries has reached a definitive agreement to acquire IVC

Industrial Coatings, Inc., a U.S.based specialty powder and liquid coatings manufacturer with 2014 sales of
more than $100 million. The transaction
is expected to close in the third quarter,
subject to customary closing conditions.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
IVC is a privately owned company
founded in 1870 as the Indianapolis
Varnish Company. The company, based
in Brazil, Indiana, focuses on the development, manufacture and sale of powder and liquid coatings for the general
industrial segment. Its industry-leading
coatings are used on a wide variety of
products, including metal office furniture,
material handling and storage products,
automotive parts, motorcycles, industrial
containers, small appliances and electronics such as printers, servers and audio-visual equipment. IVC employs more than
300 people and operates five plants in
the U.S. (two in Brazil, Indiana, and one
each in Grand Haven, Michigan; Atlanta,
Georgia; and Casa Grande, Arizona), one
plant in Guangdong, China and a small
development lab in Manchester, England.
The company also has operations in
Malaysia through a joint venture.
Acquiring IVC, which has a large,
global distribution footprint, will
strengthen our ability to serve a variety of end-use markets and enhance
PPGs supply positions in the U.S. and
China, said Shelley Bausch, PPG vice
president, global industrial coatings.
The addition of IVCs high-quality
products and industry expertise will
further enhance PPGs ability to deliver
a robust portfolio of industry-leading
industrial coatings solutions.
AkzoNobel Expands
Performance Coatings
Research Facility in Houston
AkzoNobel Performance Coatings is investing approximately 3 million ($3.4
million) to expand its research and development facilities in Houston, Texas.

The upgraded facility will support the
companys Protective Coatings, Marine
Coatings and Specialty Coatings businesses. Completion is due in early 2016.
The expanded facility will provide
a central, state-of-the-art technical resource for our businesses in the U.S., creating the critical mass for effective R&D
to efficiently support our customers,
said Aidan Mernin, RD&I Director for
Protective Coatings.
The expanded facility will be able to
house up to 35 laboratory staff, with 30
skilled technologists employed initially.
Key capabilities will include a dedicated
area for experimental paint making, a

modern paint application laboratory
and environmentally controlled drying
areas for conditioning of test panels.
Enhanced chemical resistance testing
will also be available to support the
Ceilcote and Enviroline linings ranges
in North America.
This investment underlines our focus
on technology and product innovation
and providing technical support for our
customers, said Mauricio Bannwart,
managing director of AkzoNobels
Protective Coatings business. It will be
an integral part of our global RD&I function and will directly contribute to our

PPG Reports Growth in Sustainable Product

Sales, Progress on Sustainability Goals
PG Industries has announced its

progress toward achieving its 2020
sustainability goals, which are outlined in the companys 2014 Corporate
Sustainability Report.
In 2014, the company increased
energy efficiency and improved employee safety, health and well-being.
The company also achieved 27 percent
of its sales from sustainable products
during the year, increasing from 21
percent in 2013.
Sustainable innovation has driven
PPGs research and development portfolio throughout our history, said
Charles F. Kahle II, PPG chief technology officer and vice president of coatings research and development. Our
customers are seeking coatings products that address a variety of sustainability considerations. From the very
beginning, weve been positioned to
find solutions that make customers
lives easier and benefit the environment
at the same time.
In addition to growth in sustainable-product sales, the company noted
progress toward achieving its 2020 sustainability goals such as:
Reducing energy intensity by 15 percent since 2012.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
by 12 percent since 2012.
Reducing its illness-and-injury rate
by 17 percent since 2012, including
a 5 percent decrease in the injuryand-illness rate since 2013.

Implementing wellness programs
at more than 85 percent of PPG
manufacturing facilities by the end
of 2014, a 10 percent increase over
2013.

Implementing the companys community engagement framework at
more than 52 percent of PPG sites,

Wins Australian Defence
Force Contract
Australia operations of Axalta Coating
Systems has signed an agreement with
Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles
Australia (RMMVA) to provide coating products for more than 2,500
Australian military logistic vehicles being produced as part of the Australian
governments LAND 121 Phase 3B
Defence Project. Rheinmetall is a global
leader in the supply of military vehicles. The agreement was reached based
on Axaltas capability to develop and
manufacture specific end-use coatings
required especially by the project.
This is the first defense contract of
such magnitude for Axalta and signals
another important step in our companys
growth strategy, explained Sobers Sethi,
vice president for Axaltas South and East
Asia region. Backed by a century and a
half of product innovation and thought
leadership, Axalta is well-placed to meet
the critical needs of this important project
and we look forward to a strong working
partnership with RMMVA.
To win the bid, Axalta demonstrated
its ability to develop customized product solutions for this highly specialized
market. In addition to providing special
end-use coatings, Axaltas technology
includes application techniques designed
to improve cycle times and coating productivity. Under the contract, Axalta will
provide the entire supply chain from production and supply of coatings as well
as warehousing and distribution within
Australia and also will provide technical
support to optimize application.
The agreement with Axalta Coating
Systems Australia showcases RMMVAs
ongoing commitment in engaging commercial companies to support the defense industry sector, said RMMVA
managing director Peter Hardisty. This
partnership creates cost efficiencies for
the entire program.
Axalta will produce in Australia and

export the full suite of components for the
paint, which includes hardeners, thinners,
primers and the different colors required
for the camouflage pattern. All coating
products comply with the Australian
Paint Approval Scheme (APAS) and will
be produced in Australia, generating flowon benefits into the Australian economy
through localized trade and employment.
LAND 121 Phase 3 was established
to replace the current fleet of Australian
Defence Force (ADF) field vehicles, modules and trailers and will enhance the
ground mobility of the ADF. RMMVA
signed the Land 121 Phase 3B contract
in 2013 to supply the Commonwealth of
Australia with more than 2,500 medium
and heavy military logistical trucks, all of
which must be pre-treated and painted
with APAS certified paint.

Innovative Digital Color
Measuring Device in Korea
Axalta Coating Systems has introduced
the latest digital spectrophotometer, the
Acquire Plus EFX for car refinish body
shops in Korean market.
About 30,000 digital spectrophotometers are in use by Axalta customers
around the world. Now this most advanced spectrophotometer in the global
market is being introduced to refinish
bodyshops in Korea.
The handheld digital color-measuring
device enables body shops to achieve the
best possible color match quickly, reliably and efficiently. As a result, the risk
to refinishers of costly re-work due to a
poor color match can be greatly reduced.
This technology is designed to make the
refinishers jobs easier by speeding up the
repair process and thus help bodyshops
be more efficient.
When the Acquire Plus EFX is
placed on the vehicle near the damaged area, it takes color readings from
three angles in a patented process. The

devices also measures pigment

effects including sparkle and
flake size. Once the device is
connected to a computer, software uses these readings to determine
matching color formula. If the color to
be matched is different to the standard
formula, the color matching software
automatically adjusts the formula to
find the best possible match. A camera
integrated into the instrument allows
the analysis of effect pigments, resulting in a significantly improved matching of color and appearance.

AkzoNobel Adds Baleria in

its Program to Reduce CO2
Emission by Using Biocidefree Coatings
Spanish ferry operator Baleria has
signed up to AkzoNobels landmark
carbon credits program. The company
has enrolled its passenger ferry Martin
i Soler into the scheme, which financially rewards ship owners by enabling
them to generate income in the form
of carbon credits earned by reducing

CO2 emissions.
The landmark program was developed in 2014 in conjunction with the
Gold Standard Foundation. It is based
on ship owners converting existing vessels from a biocidal antifouling system
to a premium, biocide-free advanced
hull coating such as Intersleek, part of
AkzoNobels International line of marine coatings. Intersleek products are
proven to reduce fuel consumption, and
hence reduce CO2 emissions.
The Martin i Soler was converted
from an existing silyl biocidal antifouling to Intersleek1100SR in November
2013. The vessels performance was
monitored over the following 12
months and showed a 12 percent

Axalta Coating Systems has provided the coating for a monument erected by the town of Pau, France, to honor the Tour de
France and its history. Pau, the capital of Barn on the northern edge of the Pyrenees, has been a stage town of the Tour 66
times. This year will mark its 67th time as a key stage of the Tour.
The impressive and permanent monument has been built in
the heart of the city, in the Bois-Louis park. It comprises 104 twometre high totems, in the form of a circle, reminiscent of the historic Stonehenge monument in Wiltshire, England. Three of the
totems are made of bronze and are uncoated the presentation
piece and a pair dedicated to the two World Wars while the
other one hundred and one totems have been cast from aluminium and glass and are dedicated to the winners of the Tour.
To reproduce the legendary yellow jersey of the champions, the
totems have been painted with Alesta powder coating RAL
1018 Yellow Zinc, the yellow of cheerfulness, the yellow of victory, according to Franois Bayrou, the Mayor of Pau.
The primer and powder coating were supplied by Axalta and
applied by its customer Job Coater, Sedam, who was commissioned to paint 111 totems in total: 101 for the current installation
to represent the champions of the Tour, and 10 more for the future
winners. A new totem will be added to the monument each year.
Alesta ZeroZinc primer was used for the pre-treatment of the
substrate. This innovative next generation of zinc-free anticorrosion primer from Axalta offers excellent adhesion and degassing properties and is ideal for improving the finish on irregular
substrates. Axalta powder coating RAL 1018 Zinc Yellow from
the Alesta Fine Textured collection was then applied to provide
the iconic yellow. This powder coating has fast curing properties,
which was very useful for these large pieces, and its textured finish hides small surface defects to perfection. It has a fine matte
effect finish to help to beautify the substrate and to provide an
excellent scratch resistance. It is also highly compatible with Alesta ZeroZinc primer.

USGBC Announces International Rankings of Top 10 Countries for LEED Green Building
Demand for sustainable building continues to grow throughout the globe
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced its international rankings of the Top 10 Countries for LEED, the worlds
most widely used and recognized green building rating system.
The Top 10 list highlights countries outside of the U.S. that are
making significant strides in sustainable building design, construction and transformation, illustrating the ever-growing international demand for LEED green buildings. The 10 countries
that made the list for 2015 are geographically and culturally diverse, representing seven of the worlds 20 largest single-nation
economies by gross domestic product (GDP), as well as six of
the top 11 emitters of greenhouse gases. While Canada tops
the list, Brazil and the Republic of Korea have moved up in the
rankings and Turkey and Sweden are new to the Top 10 this year.
The analysis used to develop the list ranks countries in terms
of gross square meters (GSM) and numbers of LEED projects
to date. LEED-certified spaces use less energy and water resources, save money for families, businesses and taxpayers,
reduce carbon emissions and create a healthier environment
for residents, workers and the larger community. The U.S., the
birthplace of LEED, is not included in this list but remains the
worlds largest market for LEED. The U.S. is the worlds largest
economy by GDP as well as the worlds second largest emitter
of greenhouse gases.
Canada ranks number one on the list as the largest user of
LEED outside of the U.S. with 26.63 million GSM of LEED space.
There are now over 4,814 LEED-registered and LEED-certified
projects representing 63.31 million GSM of LEED space in Canada. China (21.97 million GSM), India (13.24 million GSM) and
Brazil (5.22 million GSM), three of the four BRIC economies,

finished second through fourth on this years list, respectively.
These three countries currently represent more than 33 percent
of global greenhouse gas emissions, with China and India representing the largest source of projected growth in global emissions in the coming decades.
The Republic of Korea (4.81 million GSM) and Taiwan (3.84
million GSM) join China in providing a strong East Asian contingent to the 2015 rankings. Having two of the original tiger economies join China, India and Brazil on this years list demonstrates
that LEED is taking hold in some of the worlds fastest growing
economies, and that green buildings have enormous strategic
value in terms of controlling emissions in countries that many climate watchers have noted hold the key to staving off the worst
impacts of climate change.
Germany (4.01 million GSM) and Sweden (2.54 million GSM)
represent Europe on this list, with Germany finishing sixth and
Sweden making the list for the first time in 10thplace. Both nations are routinely cited for their innovation and leadership in
international efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Middle Eastern countries, United Arab Emirates (3.13 million GSM) and Turkey (2.95 million GSM) have both had strong
green building years. The UAE increased its total amount of
LEED-certified space by 72 percent over last year, and climbed
from ninth place overall in 2014 to eighth overall in 2015. Turkey made the Top 10 list for the first time in the nations history,
finishing ninth overall.

a Wonder of the Medieval
World
AkzoNobels Decorative Paints business
is helping to recreate one of the Seven
Wonders of the Medieval World the
Porcelain Tower of Nanjing in China.
Built during the Ming Dynasty, the
original pagoda was mostly destroyed
in the 19th century. But a highly anticipated construction project is underway
which will revive the cultural icon, with
AkzoNobel making a key contribution
through its color expertise.
Phase one involves constructing the
main Buddhist temple, featuring the
distinctive porcelain pagoda. After being selected for the prestigious project, experts from AkzoNobel carefully
selected a light yellow shade for the upcoming painting work on the temples
porcelain walls. This color reflects the
buildings heritage and symbolizes the
regaining of former glories.

group dedicated to support the use of its

RPM International Inc. has announced
that its RPM2 Group has acquired
Morrells Woodfinishes Ltd., the UKs
largest manufacturer of high-performance wood finishes.
Based outside of Manchester, Morrells
has annual net sales of approximately
$33 million and nearly 150 employees.
The company will remain a stand-alone
operation within RPM2s Wood Finishes
Group. Terms of the transaction, which
is expected to be accretive to earnings

within one year, were not disclosed.
Morrells
designs,
manufactures
and distributes a portfolio of high-performance wood coating systems. The
Morrells product line includes proprietary wood stains, lacquers, colorants
and adhesives for niche applications in
the furniture, cabinetry, and building
construction and restoration sectors.
Among its specialty coatings are finishes
that provide protection from fire, weather and bacteria. The companys products
are sold under the Xerofire, Induro and
Omnia brands. Morrells also provides
professional application equipment and
accessories under its Sprayshop brand.

Sika AG acquired the remaining shares
of the Italian based Addiment Italia from
its joint venture partner Buzzi Unicem.
The company manufactures concrete admixtures and cement grinding aids. The
transaction will strengthen Sikas production set up in Italy. Addiment Italia generated sales of 14 million in 2014.

will grow to around $2.7 billion by 2020.
The report is the latest from n-techs

and smart surfaces. n-tech believes that
self-healing materials are now one of the
most commercially promising smart materials products.
This report quantifies the markets for

Need 7.4 Years to Launch
First Chemical Product
Synthetic biology start-ups developing
technologies to convert biomass and other non-petroleum feedstocks into chemicals and materials need, on average, 7.4
years to launch a product, according to
a Lux Research analysis. Using this data
to project the output from the current
crop of young synbio companies suggests
most are likely to launch first products
between 2017 and 2022, with a peak occurring between 2019 and 2020.
While each companys approach
is unique, the lessons learned from the
first wave of bio-based materials and
chemicals scale-ups and product launches
provide valuable insights and lessons,
said Julia Allen, Lux Research analyst
and lead author of the report titled,
Synthetic Biology: Applications and

Lessons Learned in the Field of Bio-based
Materials and Chemicals.
Todays start-ups still have years to
go, but this historical view can give us
an early indication of which companies
are ahead of the curve and which are behind, she added.
Lux Research analyzed and quantified
the scale-up timelines of 23 synbio companies, and used it to predict the likelihood of youngest startups launching a
product. Among their findings: Oakbio,
Global Bioenergies are nearing the average time for launches. There is also a
crop of companies nearing the peak likelihood of releasing their first product in
2015 and 2016. Watch for scale-up and
product announcements from firms like
Oakbio and Global Bioenergies as an
indicator of whether these companies
will keep pace with the industry or fall
behind. Nucelis is ahead in the race.
Among recent synbio entrants, some
firms are set to scale and launch ahead
of schedule. Nucelis aims to launch its
first product several years ahead of the
industry average, while Lygos is tracking to meet the industrys average for a
product launch. Laggards include Kraig
Biocraft, Metabolic Explorer. Other companies are behind the industry average in
launching their first product, including
Kraig Biocraft and Metabolic Explorer.
Still, both these groups are at pilot scale,
with varying levels of momentum, so

PPG Industries industrial coatings business has introduced SPECTRACRON
SEP primer, a fast-drying, two-component (2K), wet-on-wet epoxy primer that
is designed to help heavy-duty original
equipment manufacturers (OEMs) increase production throughput without
sacrificing corrosion resistance.
Scott Laney, PPG product manager,
liquid coatings, said PPG developed
Spectracron SEP primer to meet OEM demands for primers with faster flash times.
Before the introduction of this product,
typical application times for primer and
coating on a pretreated metal substrate
were 30 minutes, with state-of-the-industry wet-on-wet flash times of five to eight
minutes, he explained. By reducing
flash times to two minutes, Spectracron
SEP primer is enabling OEMs to increase
production rates without sacrificing quality while achieving cost savings in other
areas of their operation.
Spectracron SEP primer can be used
on production lines with 5-, 10- and
30-minute flash times, enabling OEMs to
simplify stocking and reduce inventory.
The product also provides higher-gloss

257, a near-neutral descaler solution that
removes weld scale, light oxide and other

ULTRAX metal conditioner 257 is a

Product & Project Management

roject management is designed to make better use of existing resources by getting work to flow horizontally as
well as vertically. You might ask how this could work
since there are line managers responsible for P&L functioning
in these same channels. It works when all persons understand
their respective rolls. This approach does not destroy the vertical,
routine flow of work, but simply requires that the line organizations
talk to one another horizontally so work will be accomplished effortlessly through the organization. The vertical flow of work is still the
responsibility of the line managers. The horizontal flow of work is
the responsibility of the project managers, and their primary effort is
to communicate and coordinate activities horizontally between the
line organizations.
IN EVERY ORGANIZATION, there are natural gaps that
occur between both vertical and horizontal functions. These
gaps can and will create business operational islands. One
of the key roles of successful Project Management is to figuratively & functionally, link these islands. Fundamentally,
Project Management success is dependent on the completion
of an action within the constraints of time, cost, and performance. However, the definition of the projects success should
be expanded to include an additional four elements:

With acceptance by the customer/user
With minimum or mutually agreed upon scope changes
Without disturbing the main work flow of the organization
Without changing the corporate culture
Some resources would contend that there are no real differences between Project and Product Management. CHEMARK
would certainly disagree based on the one extremely important
exception . . . . . the Project Manager must focus on the end date
of his or her project. In other words theres a beginning and an
end to a project for the Project Manager.
Comparatively, a Product Manager usually views his or her
task as a never-ending one and really not willing to admit that
the product line will ever be brought to an end. The Product
Manager will always attempt to keep the product line alive by
creating product line innovation spin-offs as well as attempting
to establish demand in adjacent markets.
It is important to understand that once the product has been
developed the Product Manager takes control through the entire
product life cycle . . . . from the total roll-out market introduction; pricing; organizational functionality, etc.
Additionally, a very competent Project Manager, once the
product has been fully developed, could become the Product
Manager going forward.
Finally, the Project Manager and the Product Manager do,
in fact, share in the element of control. Although they are both
measured and held responsible for how well (relatively speaking) they control all elements essential to their success, they both
have little, if any direct control.
They must control these important elements through direct
influence and top-management support.
For example, Product and Project Management functions do not
directly control the following elements important to their success:
Money; Manpower; Equipment; Facilities; Materials;
Information; Technology.
These resources are controlled by the line managers, functional managers or resource managers. The two (Project &
Product) managers must, therefore, negotiate with line managers for all resources. The mortar between the bricks holding up
a success Activity Wall and critical substance for Both Project
& Product Managers are:
A solid routine effective relationship with the line managers
who directly assign resources to projects.
A capability of the functional employees to report vertically
to line managers at the same time that they report horizontally to one or more project managers.
The Project Managers manage projects that are finite while
the Product Managers usually are infinite . . . . . most all other

he short-term outlook for biomaterials

in coatings and related sectors in Europe
has been looking grim in the wake of the
fall in the oil price. However companies along
the biomaterials value chain in the region are
not overtly concerned. In the long-term they
think social and market trends are working in
their favor. In the second half of last year oil
prices dropped by 50-60 percent in dollar terms.
This widened the cost differential between biochemicals and mineral oil-based materials after
a period in which the gap has been narrowing.
Oil prices started to creep up again in Europe
to a level of $60-70 per barrel earlier this year.
But by the end of July they had dropped back
to around $50. For the 18 eurozone member
states the overall cost increase over the past

year has been higher because of the depreciation of the euro against the dollar.
Prices for agricultural feedstocks for biomaterials have also been declining but not as
sharply as those for crude oil. Over the past
year world agricultural commodity prices have
gone down by an average of around 10 percent.
But the cost of some key feedstocks decreased
more steeply for example, soyabean oil by
15 percent and corn/maize by 18 percent.The
world price of sugar, which is an important
feedstock for a range of new biochemicals used
in coatings, has plummeted by a third over the
last 12 months. But in the European Union the
fall has been half that because of EU restriction
on sugar imports.
The widening of the price difference between biochemicals and petrochemical-derived materials is a disadvantage in the market
at the moment, even though the biochemicals

have a similar performance, said a
chief executive of an SME supplier of
coatings biomaterials.
With some coatings biochemicals the
price premium can be as high as 30 percent, giving them only a 5-percent share
of the market, he added. If that premium could be brought down to around
5 percent then the market share could be
pushed up to 30 percent. With a much
higher volume of biochemicals we could
achieve that change in at least parts of the
coatings sector.
However some coatings companies
are finding that the price gaps between
petrochemicals-based chemicals and biomaterials is gradually having less of an
impact on purchasing decisions.
The oil-price and the price difference
between biomaterials and petrochemicalderived products is in a sense related, although not interlinked or depending on
each other, said Sjaak Griffioen, director,
innovation, strategy and sustainability at
DSM Resins & Functional Materials, a
major user of biomaterials in the production of coatings resins. Economics are
important but not a key driver for decision makers, he continues.
A preference for plant-based polymers is much more driven by environmental awareness and what he calls
responsible consumption, which takes
into account both environmental effects
and social concerns.
(It) is quickly spreading across different markets and is expected to have a
growing impact on the paint and coatings
market, he claimed.
Analysts reckon that green corporate
strategies are among a number of underlying forces which over the next several years
will gradually increase the share of biomaterials in coatings and other sectors, particularly those in which the key customers are
large international brand owners.
Some leading brand owners are now
using biomaterials as part of a long-term
sustainability strategy, explained Petri
Vasara, head of biofutures at Finnishbased Poyry Management Consulting,
which at the beginning of this year published a report on bio-based chemicals.
These brand owners are a major factor
behind the steady growth in demand for
biomaterials, particularly since they tend

to be very good at influencing and managing value chains.
Since the market for biomaterials is so
small at the moment in Europe and elsewhere their development tends to be driven by partnerships between players along
the supply chain from the processors of
the basic chemical building blocks through
to the coatings producers themselves.
With some coatings

Demand for bioplastics, which has
the largest end-use by volume among
biochemicals, amounted to only 900,000
tons globally in 2013, according to Poyry.
European Bioplastics, the European
producers trade association, estimates
the total was two years ago 1.6 million
tonnes but that includes bio-based PET,
the biggest product category, with a biobased content of only 30 percent.
Only a tiny proportion of these bioplastics are used to make coatings resins,
the main outlet for biomaterials in the
coatings market.
Partnership is the name of the
game in what is not yet a large market, said Vasara. Even the big
companies are teaming up with others
because of the difficulties of going it
alone in such a market.
DSM has been among the frontrunners in creating development and supply partnerships in biomaterials. It has
combined with Roquette Freres, a French
producer of starch and other plant-based
raw materials, to form a joint venture for
the production of sugar-derived succinic
acid for making polymers and resins.
Among coatings producers in
Europe AkzoNobel has been involved
in the creation of a number of partnerships and alliances in the development

of biochemicals, usually with the aim of
sharing costs or assuring a sales outlet
for a new biomaterial.
One of the first of these was a deal
reached two years ago with Solvay of
Belgium for the supply of a bio-based
epichlorohydrin to make epoxy resins for use in AkzoNobel coatings and
other products. AkzoNobel has recently extended an agreement with the
US biotech company Solazyme for the
annual supply of 10,000 tons of algaederived oils being jointly developed by
the two companies.
It has also teamed up with the
Colorado-based biorefining technology
company ZeaChem Inc in exploring the
potential in Europe for a large-scale plant
for making bio-based acetic acid as a
building block for a range of derivatives.
In order to lead the deployment of
biomaterials materials in our markets,
we have been setting up partnerships
across our supply chain, explained an
AkzoNobel spokesman. This supports
the emergence of a new bio-based industry, and at the same time enables
AkzoNobel to tap into alternative feedstock sources.
The
main
objectives
behind
AkzoNobels use of biomaterials in its
products is the lowering of carbon footprints and the achievement of greater resource efficiencies.
A considerable share of AkzoNobels
environmental footprint is embodied in
the raw materials we buy, and most biobased materials exhibit lower footprints,
the spokesman says.
Market research reports have been
forecasting that European bioplastics
demand could grow by as much as a
35-percent compound annual growth
rate (CAGR) to 2030. But BIO-TIC, an
European Union -funded project for
promoting industrial biotechnology, has
argued that a CAGR of 10-15 percent
may be more realistic. But, because of the
sectors lack of cost competiveness , that
growth rate may not be achievable without government iniatives such as quotas
for biobased plastics and bans on certain
petrochemical products. CW

sia-Pacific is the key market for marine coatings due to

a high level of new shipbuilding activity, as well as drydockings in the region. Market research firm TechNavios
analysts forecast the global marine coatings market to grow at a
CAGR of 11.29 percent over the period 2013-2018. One of the
key factors contributing to this market growth is the expansion of
the oil and gas market. The global marine coatings market has also
been witnessing the growing consumer preference for eco-friendly
products; however, strict environmental regulations could pose a
challenge to the growth of this market, the report stated.
AkzoNobel reported that it has seen generally positive market developments, which is reflected in the performance of its
marine and protective coatings reporting unit, which includes
the oil and gas industry. The company reported that marine and
protective coatings revenue was up 15 percent in the second
quarter, to 418 million.
This was due to favorable currencies and positive volume development within marine coatings, partially offset by weaker demand
in protective coatings due to lower capital spending and delayed
projects in the global oil and gas industries. In the first half of the year
overall, revenues were up by 13 percent, to 771 million. Marine
volumes have driven by strong demand from projects in Europe and
Asia, tempered by continued weakness in the Chinese shipbuilding
industry, a spokesperson for AkzoNobel stated.
2015 has so far been a reasonably good year when it comes
to demand for marine coatings, said Geir Boe, vice president,
marine coatings, Jotun. Deliveries of new buildings show a slight
increase, while low levels of new orders make the outlook less
promising. We have also seen an increased number of dockings as
quite some owners will dock their vessels before January 1, 2016
where the requirement for ballast water treatment will demand
investments in new equipment.
Growth in the marine coatings market can be attributed
to a number of factors. The basic factor is increase in world
GDP, which implies more trade and higher demand for transport by sea and tonnage, said Boe. Still high growth in China
is fundamental. Demand for more tonnage will create cyclical

demands for new buildings and a steady increase in coatings for
repair and maintenance as the merchant fleet grows.
Asia Pacific Region Drives Growth

The Asia-Pacific region by far represents the most important
market for marine coatings due to new shipbuilding industry
and dry-dockings.
According to AkzoNobel, demand for marine coatings is highest
in areas of new construction of ships and offshore structures, notably
Korea and China, although the market in China has softened recently.
Asia has increasingly become more important for marine
coatings, said Boe. Korea, China and Japan are dominating
when it comes to new buildings. China is also by far the country where most dry dockings take place. The main reasons for
the growth are lower cost and acceptable technology level and
workmanship. We also see that Singapore is growing as a hub
for ship owners. We believe that the importance of Asia for marine coatings will continue to increase where also new countries
like India might enter the arena more strongly.
Environmental Legislation
Environmental regulations are becoming increasingly stricter in
the coming years. This is very evident in Europe, said Boe.
The regulations will set the agenda for the R&D for the coating manufacturers and limit the scope of development. Costs
related to testing and approval for new raw materials and products will increase dramatically. We also see that regulations in
China and Korea become stricter year by year in China often
with short notice time for implementation.
Both the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) and
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and
Restriction of Chemicals) will have a significant impact on the
marine coatings industry.
At the heart of these regulations is the requirement to
demonstrate the safety of our products for our customers and

the environment, said Gareth Prowse,
Product Safety and Regulatory Affairs
manager, Performance Coatings at
AkzoNobel. This approach is at the
core of our product development ambitions and our own Product Stewardship
initiatives such us the Priority Substance
program, an industry leading approach
to managing hazardous substances in our
products. As such we are well prepared to
manage any possible restriction on individual substances.
The BPR will affect the availability of
biocides for use in the antifouling coatings industry. We expect that the core
biocides used in these products will still
be available after the BPR evaluation
period (for example, Econea, Zineb,
DCOIT and Copper Pyrithione have all
been approved for use), said Prowse.
However, the cost and risk involved
with registering a genuinely new biocide
not used in another sector such as pesticides or pharmaceuticals is unlikely.
To that end the BPR is stifling innovation
which means that the industry may lose
out in the long run as we miss the opportunity to use potentially undiscovered
environmentally benign substances with
excellent performance.
There is also significant uncertainty
about how each country will manage the
authorization of individual products, he
continued. The ambitious protection
goals of individual Governments may ultimately create a patchwork of regulation
in which products are restricted from use
in some countries but approved in others.If antifouling products arent regulated in an appropriate and consistent way
across the EU then there is a very real
threat that the construction and maintenance industries will be pushed outside
of the EU. Meanwhile, certain markets
outside of the EU are currently facing an
increase regulatory activity. South Korea
is starting its Korean REACH program,
similar to EU REACH, which will affect
how products are classified and managed.
China has also tightened up on its local
chemical Inventory systems, whilst Japan,
Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and
Vietnam all have regulation in place to
control the use of chemicals in their respective countries.
As yet no specific regulatory framework for managing biocides has been

implemented in these countries, instead
merely listing biocides as prioritized
hazardous substances requiring scrutiny
early in the work plan for the regulations.
Whats New
According to AkzoNobel, one of the key
trends in the marine market are the current and impending environmental regulations such as the new Emission Control
Areas (ECAs) where operators must
invest in more costly distillate fuels or
scrubbers to ensure compliance with the
new 0.1 percent sulphur limits and the
need to increase operational and cost efficiencies, combined with the pressure to
improve sustainability.
AkzoNobel is at the forefront of
bringing new innovations to meet those
needs, particularly in hull coatings, which
are the most widely used eco efficiency
technology, said Jim Brown, market
development manager, Marine Coatings

at AkzoNobel. We have seen a significant increase in demand for products such
as our multi-award winning biocide-free
anti-fouling product Intersleek1100SR,
part of the International range of marine
coatings. We alsoappreciate that not every owner and operator may want to use
a premium product, but still want to improve the operational efficiencies of their
fleets. Herefore, we continue our commitment to providing a comprehensive
choice of products that guide customers
through the sustainability value chain.
For example, we have seen an uptake in our Intercept 8000 LPP, a biocidal linear polishing polymer antifouling
featuring patented Lubyon technology
that delivers predictable long-term performance for in-service periods of up to
90 months, he noted. Although it is
priced below Intersleek 1100SR, it still
provides an average five percent fuel and
efficiency savings.

AkzoNobel also noted in the offshore market, there is a notable shift in demand, with a decline in floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units being replaced by significant
investment in Norwegian oil and gas assets.
The floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) segment is also
gathering pace, and there is increasing demand in the floating
storage and regasification (FSRU) market as countries look to regasify larger volumes of LNG offshore instead of onshore, said
Toby Stein, market manager Upstream Oil and Gas, Protective
Coatings, AkzoNobel. With offshore margins tighter, there is
continued demand for fire protection coatings with lower applied
weight and which will give high levels of performance and protection against hydrocarbon fires. This reflects the increased focus on
improving productivity and reducing cost of application.
For corrosion protection, pure epoxy universal primers
continue to be the solution of choice to provide long-term asset protection, and customers are seeking to reduce coatings
complexity and provide long-term performance across a wide
range of operating conditioned, Stein added. The contraction in capital investment in the offshore market has resulted
in a more careful analysis operational expenditure. There is
an increasing requirement for coatings companies to provide
a holistic approach to managing assets using state-of-the-art
IT technology to link corrosion surveys to enable operational
budget planning.
Jotun has been instrumental in developing an ISO standard
for measuring hull performance. This standard is expected to be
finally approved within a years time. This method of measuring hull performance makes it possible to measure the performance of the antifoulings throughout the vessels sailing period
and is a good basis for a ship operator to select the right hull
coatings solution for each vessel. Jotun has launched a solution
which comply fully with this standard including an antifouling
SeaQuantum X200 with guaranteed maximum speed loss
over a vessels sailing period.
PPG Industries protective and marine coatings business
offers PITT-CHAR XP coating, a dual-performance cryogenic
spill protection (CSP) coating that guards substrates against
extremely high and low temperatures in marine and industrial environments. Designed as a flexible epoxy-based intumescent passive fire protection (PFP) coating, PITT-CHAR
XP coating can prevent steel structures from heating up rapidly in the event of a fire by providing insulative protection
against high temperatures.
With growing interest in LNG (liquefied natural gas) projects balanced with budget cuts widespread across the oil and
gas industry, owners and engineers need to minimize fabrication
and construction spend wherever possible, Donald Le, PPG
global offshore segment manager said. He added that when it
comes to PFP and CSP, using PITT-CHAR XP coatings patented flexible resin system can dramatically enhance production
schedules while reducing costs against traditional duplex systems and avoiding cracking and damage during transportation
and erection. PPGs comprehensive protective coatings range
features tank linings, zinc-rich primers, general-purpose epoxy
primers, splash zone and subsea coatings, and durable finishes,
combined with its hydrocarbon PFP/CSP offering.
AkzoNobels latest offerings are Intersleek 1100SR, Intercept
8000 LPP and Chartek 8E Intersleek 1100SR. Intersleek1100SR
is the shipping industrys first biocide free, fluoropolymer technology that tackles slime. Every year it costs the shipping industry an estimated 44 million extra tons of bunker fuel and
an extra 134 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, said Brown.
Development of the fluoropolymer included a three-year research program involving a multi-discipline team of marine
biologists, hydrodynamicists and polymer scientists. The team
was supported by world renowned independent academic institutes, four years of laboratory testing and in-service and full
vessel performance data from some of the worlds leading ship
owners and operators.
Intersleek1100SR delivers fuel-saving performance throughout the entire docking cycle of a vessel. Designed for all commercial vessels, even when slow or ultra-slow steaming,
Intersleek1100SR delivers outstanding macro and micro fouling control with good static resistance, even in warm waters.
Intersleek technology has been proven to increase a vessels efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions and associated fuel costs by
an average of nine percent, Brown noted.
Intersleek1100SR is biocide-free and has higher volume solids and lower film thicknesses than antifouling systems. This
typically results in a 40 percent reduction in paint volume and

It has been adopted by the shipping industry since its launch in
February 2013 with almost 500 vessels coated.
The benefits of Intersleek1100SR in reducing fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions can also create additional
bottom line benefits for ship owners and operators who enroll
their vessels into AkzoNobels carbon credits program, the first
methodology of its kind developed for the shipping industry in
conjunction with The Gold Standard Foundation.
The methodology is based on ship owners converting existing vessels from a biocidal antifouling system to a premium,
biocide-free advanced hull coating such as the Intersleek range
of products. Based on the 100 eligible ships already converted
from a biocidal antifouling to Intersleek technology, there is an
estimated $2.8 million worth of carbon credits potentially available to ship owners and operators. The first claim, worth almost
$500,000 for 17 vessels is being audited now and we anticipate the first credits to be issued shortly.
Intercept 8000 LPP is AkzoNobels latest biocidal linear
polishing polymer antifouling technology that delivers a consistent and predictable long-term performance for in-service
periods of up to 90 months. This helps ship owners and operators to plan and budget effectively throughout the dry-docking
cycle of a vessel.
It can increase efficiencies and reduce fuel costs and associated emissions by five percent in comparison to controlled depletion
polymer antifoulings, said Brown. This is because it is based on

patented LUBYON polymer technology, which gives the coating
a superhydrophilic surface; when the coating is immersed this
creates a lubricating effect, which results in less friction.
LUBYON technology reacts with seawater via a constant
surface active zone releasing only the optimum amount of
biocide over the scheme life to control fouling settlement.
Critically, this biocide release rate is largely unaffected by
seawater temperature meaning Intercept 8000 LPP has total
trading flexibility and can operate across global routes and
through all seasons.
Chartek 8E is a high-performance two-component epoxy intumescent passive fire protection product aimed at
the offshore oil and gas industry. Chartek 8E provides a
significant reduction in applied weight, addressing a key

Asia Pacific Report

A
sia is the largest of all continents on the earth. Asia has

30 percent of the worlds land mass with over 60 percent of the worlds population. Its population almost
quadrupled during the 20th century. Depending upon how one
defines it, Asia is comprised of 51 countries with a population of
nearly 4.4 billion people.
Asia has the two most populous countries in the world
China and India. China is the largest country with an estimated
population of 1.4 billion in 2014. It accounts for almost one-third
of Asias total population. India runs a close second to China with
an estimated population of 1.3 billion in 2014 and represents
nearly 30 percent of the continents population. It is estimated
that Indias population will surpass Chinas before 2030.
In 2013, the total sales of coatings in Asia Pacific were
$56,241 million, on approximately 18,543 million liters. Part of
Asia Pacifics coatings industry is comprised of large, fast-growing countries. Two of the largest and fastest-growing coatings
markets in Asia Pacific are China and India. In fact, China and
India together represent roughly 75% of Asia Pacifics total coatings volume in 2013. In addition to these large countries, Asia
Pacific is also comprised of many smaller, fast-growing countries
in terms of coatings consumption such as those in Southeast
Asia - Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. Asia Pacific
also consists of mature, slow-growing countries such as Japan
and Australia which have struggled over the years to hold onto
their respective market shares of the region. Japan is the second
largest Asian market in value for coatings and the third largest
market in volume. In stark contrast to China and India, Japan
actually experienced negative coatings volume growth over the
past five years. Australia also experienced negative coatings
growth over the same timeframe.
For this report, the Asia Pacific region has been segmented
in the following manner: Australia,China India Japan, South
Korea, Central Asia, Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Philippines,
Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, etc.) and Other Asia
Pacific Countries
Volume and Value

It is estimated that the market value of coatings in the Asia Pacific
region was $56,241 million in 2013 on a volume of 18,543 million liters. This represents a 9.8 percent annual increase in volume and a 10% annual increase in value since 2008.
Growth over the next five years is forecast to be less robust
than the previous five years. Volume growth is projected to be
about six percent for the next five years as compared to 9.8 percent for the previous five years. Value growth of the Asia Pacific
region is projected to be 7.4 percent between 2013 and 2018
as compared to ten percent for the previous five years. Despite

this forecast slowdown in growth over the next five years, the
Asia Pacific region is forecast to grow approximately 1.7 percent faster than the global average in volume and 1.9 percent
faster than the global average in value. This will result in a 2018
value of $80,465 million on a volume of 24,842 million liters
for Asia Pacific.
Country Distribution
China:
China is the second largest economy in the world behind the
U.S. Many economists and global organizations, such as the
World Bank are forecasting that China will surpass the U.S. as
having the largest economy in the world within the next five
years. China has enjoyed unprecedented GDP growth over the
past two decades. It is therefore of no surprise that China is
now, and has been for years, the largest coatings producing
and consuming country on the face of the earth. In 2013, the
Chinese coating market was estimated to be $31,331 million on
a volume of about 10,681 million liters. China alone accounts
for 58 percent of the volume and 56 percent of the value of the
Asia Pacific coatings market. China also represents 29 percent
of the global volume and 24 percent of the global value of the
coatings industry. The size of the Chinese coatings market has
grown by over 5,600 million liters since 2008. China is viewed
by industry observers and participants as being the engine of
growth for coatings, not only within the Asia Pacific region, but
also for the world.
For years, economists have been predicting a slowdown in
the Chinese economy which will have a direct impact on the
growth of the coatings industry. That economic slowdown has
occurred. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has forecast that
Chinas economy will have slowed to 7.5 percent growth by
year end 2014 and to 7.4 percent by the end of 2015. Key activity indicators of the Chinese economy have recently weakened,
causing other economists to forecast more modest growth for
China over the next several years. It should be noted that even
if the Chinese coatings industry grows at a rate of seven percent

annually over the next decade, the already largest coatings industry in the world will be twice its current size.
India:
Today, although the Indian paint and coatings industry is still a
relatively small portion (eight percent) of the global coating industry, it is certainly one of the fastest growing in both size and
importance. India has seen dramatic growth in coatings production over the last decade or so and is now the second largest
producer and consumer of coatings within Asia Pacific, increasing from 2,106 million liters in 2008 to 3,105 million liters in
2013. Although India is the second largest producer of coatings
within Asia Pacific in terms of volume, it actually ranks third
($5,701 million) in value behind China and Japan. While the
Indian economy was clearly impacted by the global recession, it
has still been growing at an enviable growth rate, far faster than
that of most developed nations. This is the result of the expanding economy and the fact that the Indian coatings industry does
not depend heavily on an export market. The Indian coatings
industry is dominated by the decorative segment which represents well over 75 percent of the market. Although the industrial
coatings segment is less than 25 percent of the total volume of
India, this portion of the market is growing rapidly due to increased commercial and government investment in sectors such
as automotive, infrastructure, shipping port projects and general
manufacturing.
Japan:
Japan now ranks as the number three coatings producing country in Asia Pacific in terms of volume, and number two in value.
Unlike some of its Asian neighbors, Japan has been experiencing
negative growth in both its economy and its coatings industry
in recent years. A contributor to the negative coating growth
in Japan has been the outsourcing of a large portion of Japans
manufacturing sector, shifting coatings consumption to new geographies. In 2008, the size of the Japanese coatings market in
volume was 1,532 million liters. Five years later, in 2013, it was
1,341 million liters a loss of more than 190 million liters. This
negative trend is expected to turn around and a small increase
in volume (18 million liters) is being forecast to take place by
2018. The disparity between developed parts of Asia Pacific
such as Japan and Australia versus the developing countries becomes apparent in the per capita GDP and paint consumption
data. The per capita paint consumption in Japan is on par with
Western Europe. At 10.5 liters per capita paint consumption,
Japan is well over twice the average (4.7 liters per capita) for all
of Asia Pacific.
South Korea:
South Korea is the fourth largest market (both in volume and
value) for coatings in Asia Pacific. The size of the South Korean
coating industry is $3,926 million on a volume of about 888
million liters. South Korea is a mature, slow growing marketplace for coatings. The largest segment of the South Korean

coatings industry is the decorative sector, representing less then
one-fourth of the total volume. This is a small percentage compared to most other countries in Asia Pacific. For example, the
decorative sector represents approximately twice that amount
(45 percent) of the total Asia Pacific coatings industry. The next
largest coatings segment in South Korea is a close second, general industrial, at 20 percent of the total. The marine coatings
segment is important for South Korea. South Koreas marine
coatings segment is second in size only to China. This segment is
the third largest sector for coatings in South Korean, representing roughly 15% of its total volume.
Australia:
Australia and New Zealand (Oceania) both have a mature paint
industry with a similar end use structure. Since they are mature economies, rapid growth within the Oceania region of Asia
Pacific is not expected. The coatings market in Australia is a
smaller and more mature market ($1,078 million on 198 million liters) relative to the leading countries in the region. The
Australian coatings industry resembles, in many ways, the mature markets of North America and Western Europe. Australia
has struggled in recent times with its negative coatings growth
(volume) occurring between 2008 and 2013. The value of
Australias coatings industry is forecast to grow from its 2013
value of $1,078 million to $1,251 million in 2018 growth of
about 16 percent over that five year period.
Southeast Asia:
This group of countries is often referred to as the ASEAN countries (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), which is a political and economic organization of ten countries including
Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar,
Cambodia, Laos, etc. They are, for the most part, high growth
countries where significant opportunities exist for paint and
coatings. These countries are experiencing positive growth in
the decorative, protective, industrial, wood, automotive and marine sectors.

Although China, South Korea and Japan represent close to
80 percent of the marine coatings industry, new shipping hubs
are being established in Southeast Asia, particularly in Vietnam
and the Philippines. Southeast Asia has been the beneficiary of
the rising costs in Chinese manufacturing operations. This has
resulted in OEM plants, and therefore coatings plants, being established in or relocated to Southeast Asia. The movement of
investment into low cost countries within Southeast Asia has
increased opportunities for paint companies in the region to
expand into ASEAN countries like Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar
and Cambodia. Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing economies in the Asia Pacific region. Vietnam has been attracting significant investment from industry in recent years. Much of this
investment is in construction and infrastructure. The accession
of Vietnam into the World Trade Organization (WTO) back in
2007 is proving to be a good move for Vietnams business sector. As a member of WTO, Vietnams commitments have been to
eliminate protectionism in terms of international trade and foreign investment. This has translated into accelerated industrial
development, especially in sectors such as automotive and other
manufacturing segments which have had, and will continue to
have, a positive impact on coatings growth.
Indonesia is also emerging as a strong growth market for
coatings. Indonesia has enjoyed an increase in confidence and
has been attracting investments from international corporations
in recent years, giving a boost to the coatings industry. The establishment of economic development zones, coupled with increased tourism to this country, will help to drive growth in the
Indonesian coatings industry over the next several years.
Singapore is also an attractive market for coatings. Singapore
actually has one of the highest per capita paint consumption
rates in the Asia Pacific region and in the world.

coatings segments in the ASEAN countries is forecast to continue over the next several years. It should be noted, however, that this part of Asia Pacific is not without its own set
of challenges. These challenges include such factors as poor
export growth, competition from China, terrorist threats and
the generally low investment growth in some of the countries
within Southeast Asia.
Central Asia:
Central Asia is the region of the Asian continent that is bordered by the Caspian Sea in the west to China in the east and
from Russia in the North to Afghanistan in the south. Central
Asia consists of the so-called stans countries which were once
all republics of the former Soviet Union including Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and
Azerbaijan. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan constitute over 80%
of the coatings industry in this region. Of these two countries,
Kazakhstan is the bigger, faster-growing market with a per capita paint consumption twice that of Uzbekistan. The Kazakhstan
building and construction market has been experiencing strong
growth in recent years which has fueled the growth of decorative coatings. Significant investment in automotive business has
led to growth in the automotive OEM and refinish sectors.
Other Asia Pacific:
The other countries in Asia Pacific are referred to collectively as
the Other Asia Pacific for the remainder of this chapter.

Competitive Landscape
Like all regions of the world, the multinational coatings companies are playing an increasingly more important role in the Asia
Pacific marketplace. However, unlike the mature regions such as
Europe and North America, the Western-based multinationals
constitute a smaller share of the total market in this region than
the large Asian players and the many smaller local players.
There has been some consolidation that has taken place by the
multinationals and larger Asian coatings companies throughout
Asia Pacific. For example, the China National Coatings Industry
Association (CNCIA) estimates that its roughly 700 members
represent over 80 percent of the total Chinese coatings industry.
This group includes companies such as AkzoNobel Swire Paints,
Axalta, Carpoly Chemical Group, BASF Shanghai, International
Paint of Shanghai, Guangdong Huarun Paints, Nippon Paint
China, PPG Coatings Tianjin, Shanghai Paints, SKSHU Paint
Corporation, etc. However, CNCIA estimates that there are still
more than 15,000 coatings manufacturers active in the Chinese
coatings marketplace. Most of these players are small, somewhat unsophisticated companies. As has occurred in Europe
and North America, it is anticipated that the rate of consolidation will accelerate and the number of players will decrease
throughout Asia Pacific over the next two decades. This will be
the result of (1) the best-in-class regionals being acquired by the
multinationals and (2) the weaker, under-financed players having to close their doors as they are not able to conform to environmental pressures and not able to meet the demand for higher
quality products by customers. For now and into the foreseeable
future, much of the Asia Pacific coatings industry will remain
fairly fragmented across many of the sectors.
The top 20 coatings suppliers in Asia Pacific are a blend of
the largest Asia-based paint companies and of the multinationals headquartered outside of Asia Pacific. These top 20 suppliers include 13 companies headquartered in Asia (Asian Paint,
Chugoku, Kansai, Nippon Paint, Nipsea, Sk Kaken, etc.), four
multinationals headquartered in Europe (AkzoNobel, BASF,
Jotun and Hempel) and three multinationals headquartered in
the U.S. (Axalta, PPG and Valspar). Of these, the top handful
of players, which account for well over 25 percent of the Asia
Pacific coatings industry, include AkzoNobel, Nippon Paint and
Nipsea, Kansai, PPG and Asian Paint.
AkzoNobel, combined with its 2008 acquisition of ICI,
holds a leading market position in the Asian coatings industry. This includes being a leader in the Chinese decorative and
industrial markets and having a very strong presence in powder coatings within the region. International Paint, a business
unit of AkzoNobel, gives the company a solid position in the
large marine & protective coatings segments in Asia Pacific. It
should be noted that over the last several years, Asia Pacific has
become the largest, fastest-growing market for marine coatings in the world.
AkzoNobel and Nippon Paint / Nipsea are the leading decorative paint suppliers in Asia Pacific, followed by Asian Paints.
Kansai, Valspar, Berger Paint (India) and Dulux (Australia) are
in the next group of suppliers of decorative coatings in Asia
Pacific. PPG continues to increase its share of the Asian coatings
market through organic growth and acquisitions. In addition to
the successes in other sectors, PPG and Axalta have carved out
leading positions in the automotive OEM and refinish markets
in China. Valspar has a large presence in the industrial coatings
market in China and is active in the decorative coatings sector
through its 2006 acquisition of Huarun Paints. Since its 2010

acquisition of Wattyl, Valspar has been increasing its share of
the Australian decorative coatings segment as well.
The Japanese companies, Kansai Paint and Nippon Paint, are
not only the market leaders in Japan but are also major suppliers in China and other countries throughout the Asia Pacific
region. Chugoku Marine Paints, another Japanese-based company that sells paint in the marine and industrial sectors, now
has three paint plants in China.
While many of the local and regional paint companies in
Asia Pacific concentrate on the low-end parts of the market,
an increasing number of the larger paint manufacturers are
offering high quality coatings that compete directly with the
multinationals, at least in certain end use markets. For example, Guangdong Carpoly Chemical Group, Guangzhou
Strong Chemical and Daoqum are Chinese companies that
offer high-end products, although none of them have very
large market shares.
The Indian paint and coatings industry is going through a
transition. As a result, foreign multinationals continue to make
large investments in the country and the pace of market consolidation is increasing. For example, historically India has had one
of the lowest per capita paint consumption rates in the world,
even compared to most countries in Asia Pacific. This per capita
consumption rate will surely increase over the next decade with
the ongoing rise of the middle class. A growing percentage of
Indias population, an estimated 1.27 billion in 2014, is able
to purchase previously unreachable items such as homes, major
home appliances, automobiles and other consumer goods.
Asian Paints and Berger are two of the largest paint companies headquartered in India, with Asian Paints being almost
three times the size of Berger. Participation by the large multinational paint companies is also growing in India as well.
AkzoNobel, Axalta, BASF and PPG are all active in the Indian
automotive refinishes, powder coatings and industrial coatings
markets. Two of the large Japanese companies, Kansai Paint and
Nippon Paint, have also been growing their positions in India.
For example, in 1999, Kansai Paint completed its acquisition of
Tata Forbes group and as a result, Goodlass Paints Ltd. became
a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kansai Paint Company. In 2006,
Goodlass Paints Ltd. changed their name to Kansai Nerolac
Paints Ltd. In recent years, Kansai Nerolac Paints has grown to
become one of the top three coatings companies in India.
The large Western companies are also increasing their investment in India. For example, a couple of years ago, PPG
Industries received the necessary approvals from Indian authorities to build upon its 15 year relationship with Indias largest
coatings company, Asian Paints, by expanding its existing coatings joint venture and establishing a second joint venture. PPGs
and Asian Paints first joint venture was expanded to include
marine, transportation, consumer packaging and industrial
liquid sectors. The second 50-50 joint venture in India (Asian
Paints PPG Limited) is focused on the powder, industrial container and protective light industrial sectors.
Within India, the so-called organized part of the Indian
coatings industry is the national, premium end of the market
with higher quality and higher priced products. This segment

of the industry is served mostly by the large, well-financed coatings companies including an increasing number of multinationals as mentioned above. This organized part of the market is
estimated to be over two-thirds of the total coatings industry in
India. By contrast, the unorganized part of the Indian market
is still quite fragmented with well over 1,000 small participants.
This segment tends to be served by many of the local and regional coatings suppliers.
The rapid growth in Asia Pacific, and in particular growth
in China, India and much of Southeast Asia has really gained
the attention of the leading Western coatings manufacturers and
raw material suppliers over the past 20 years or so. Especially
given the slow growth in Western countries, many formulators
and suppliers have been focusing on the Asia Pacific region for
future growth.
Expanding economies, albeit at lower growth rates, increasing affluence and a broadening of the middle class in countries
such as China, India and many in Southeast Asia represent good
investment opportunities for coatings manufacturers and raw
materials suppliers. For example, in the fourth quarter of 2013,
AkzoNobel strengthened its manufacturing footprint in India
by opening a new, decorative coatings plant with an annual capacity of 55 million liters. This is AkzoNobels sixth factory in
India. With its Chinese headquarters located in Shanghai, PPG
now has 4,000 employees in Mainland China and operates fourteen manufacturing plants throughout China. In January 2014,
Axalta Coating Systems broke ground to expand its manufacturing capacity for coatings with the construction of a new $50
million eco-friendly water-borne facility in the Jiading district of
Shanghai. Axaltas Shanghai water-borne facility is expected to
begin production in 2015. This plant will supply up to 25,000
metric tons of water-borne products to support the long term
growth of the automotive OEM industry that is rapidly expanding into the western and southern provinces of China. This will
augment Axaltas flagship automotive OEM coatings plant located in Changchun, China.
As part of its expansion strategy throughout the rapidly
growing parts of Asia Pacific, in mid-year 2013, Nippon Paint
broke ground on its third paint plant in Vietnam, located in the
Vinh Phuc province. When completed, this plant will produce
general industrial paint coatings for the motorcycle and automotive industries, marine coatings and resins.
In the first half of 2013, BASF established a new, state-ofthe-art Coatings Technical Competence Center in Bangkok,
Thailand. This plant is designed to support technology transfer,
product development and other laboratory activities mainly related to motorcycle coatings within the ASEAN region including
Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia. One
can see that the recent drawback in the economies of emerging
Asia has not stifled the enthusiasm of, and investment by, those
coatings companies having a long-term view of the region.
It is true that the high level of activity in the region presents
good opportunities for Western suppliers. However, many of
these suppliers underestimate the differences in business culture

in the region, particularly between Chinese companies and their
Western counterparts. Furthermore, it should be noted that although emerging Asia will continue to represent solid investment
opportunities within the coatings industry, the competitive environment is becoming more challenging. As mentioned above,
there is an increasing awareness by customers and regulators
of the need for higher quality, sustainable technologies. While
Europe and North America are lagging on this issue, sustainability will likely become front-and-center within the coatings
industry over the next decade in emerging Asia. The multinational companies will continue to make major investments in
the region via acquisitions and greenfield investments in manufacturing plants and R&D facilities. At the same time, the larger state-owned and privately-held companies will continue to
ramp up to compete more aggressively and effectively with the
multinational players in their home markets. Asia Pacific, with
all of its diversity, will provide a tremendous stream of revenues
and profits for companies who commit the necessary resources
to capitalize upon the myriad of opportunities that exist within
this region.
Market Trends and Drivers

In comparison to most developed nations, China, India and
most of the Southeast Asian countries have historically been
more focused on the lower quality, lower priced coatings segments. Limited R&D expenditures by and capabilities of the
small, local and regional players have historically resulted in a
lower overall level of product quality in this region of the world.
Simply stated, price was often the first priority for customers in
many Asia Pacific countries in years past, followed by product
quality and reliability. Increasingly, an emphasis on lower quality coatings products in Asia Pacific, particularly in certain end
use segments (automotive OEM, protective, marine, etc.) has
become a thing of the past.
Many segments of the coatings industry within Asia Pacific
have been making significant strides in modernizing and meeting
the standards of the developed nations. However, there is still a
ways to go in many end use segments within most countries. At
its present pace of growth, most Asian countries will continue
the rapid path to technical and economic parity with the West.
New coatings technology migrating into, and being developed
within the region is having a positive impact on the Asia Pacific
market. Some of this is being driven by public pressure and government regulations. For example, smart coatings, nanotechnology and a range of green chemistries are all playing a role
in addressing the growing Asian demand for environmentally
friendly and sustainable coatings that have more functionality
for customers. Much of this trend in improved coatings quality,
particularly in the industrial sector, is being driven by the multinational customers of coatings with operations in Asia Pacific
that require suppliers to meet global coatings standards.
Throughout parts of Asia Pacific, a greater emphasis is being
placed on R&D efforts and higher technology formulations
due to the increased importance and growth of the industrial coatings sector. Many of these efforts are accomplished
through collaboration between the multinational and local/

regional companies.
Rapid urbanization and a more stable economy have spurred
the proliferation of home improvement supplies stores in
some Asia Pacific countries. For example, it is estimated that
across Indonesias largest cities Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya,
Bandung, Makassar, etc. a few thousand large and small retail
outlets now exist that supply home improvement materials. The
most widely available products, which are sold in 95 percent of
these stores, are paints. As more residential structures are being
built to meet the needs of a growing population in and around
the major cities in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and
other countries throughout Asia Pacific, a surge in demand for
home improvement supplies is expected.
A result of the diversity of the Asia Pacific region is the uneven distribution of demand within each of the end use segments. The automotive industry is now a focus for development
in China, India, Korea and Thailand. The demand for automotive OEM and refinish paints will continue to grow as the pent
up demand is fulfilled. Countries like China, India, Thailand,
Vietnam and Malaysia are also investing heavily in infrastructure, which increases demand for decorative coatings.
Developing Asia Pacific appears to be placing more emphasis on environmental issues and sustainability. China is
out front of the others with its Ministry of Environmental
Protection beginning to consider measures that address these
issues. Environmental concerns are getting more attention as
the Chinese government has put a VOC consumption tax and
a VOC emission fee on the agenda for discussion with coatings industry leaders, with the likelihood of being implemented
within the next one to two years. There is also a lead-contained
coatings elimination program being formed in China focused on
with implementation being targeted over the next few years.
The Asia Pacific region has clearly outpaced all other regions of the world since the global recession. The region has
posted well over seven percent growth per year in GDP since
2008 in contrast to the slower growing regions of Europe and
North America.
China has experienced tremendous economic growth since
the late 1970s. In part, the result of economic liberalization policies, the gross domestic product of China increased tenfold between 1978 and 2006, and foreign investment soared during the
1990s. In the first decade of the new millennium, China grew its
proportion of global manufacturing output from less than 10%
of the global total to more than 20 percent of the total. Greatly
contributing to this is the fact that Chinas economy grew nearly
four-fold from 2002 to 2013. After sustaining decades of annual GDP growth of ten percent or more, in 2007 China passed
Germany to become the worlds third-largest economy, and in
2010, it passed Japan to become the second-largest economy.
In the past five years, China has contributed significantly more
to overall world growth than any other country. Most economists agree that Chinas steady growth through the 2008 2009
Recession helped prevent the entire global economy from slipping into an even more destructive downturn. China heads the

economic class of the so-called BRIC countries of Brazil, Russia,
India and China. According to the McKinsey Global Institute,
China will have more than 220 cities with populations greater
than one million people by 2030, and more than 70 percent of
the Chinese population will live in cities with more than one
million people by 2025.
While not to detract from Chinas impressive historical
growth, there is no denying that there has been a recent slowdown in Chinas GDP growth compared to past years. According
to the official data released by the National Bureau of Statistics
of China (21 October 2014), GDP growth for China in the third
quarter of 2014 was the slowest growth since the first quarter
of 2009, during the depths of the 2008 2009 Recession. The
year-over-year growth for the third quarter of 2014, according
to Chinas National Bureau of Statistics, was 7.3 percent.
The massive factory sector within China has slowed dramatically. Economists believe that China has too much manufacturing capacity to satisfy the current, anemic levels of global
demand, which have still not been able to fully recover from
the financial crisis. As Chinas and Southeast Asias exports have
fallen due to sluggish Western economies, so too has the GDP
growth of their economies. While this occurred, there was a leveling off of middle class consumer demand across China which
has resulted in thousands of layoffs and tepid sales of products
for domestic consumption.
Chinas GDP growth is still likely to do better than most other countries. Since the 2008 recession, China, India and many
Southeast Asian countries have continued to grow much faster
than the global average rate. This is in contrast to other countries in the region, such as Japan and Australia, whose economies have struggled since the 2008 2009 recession similar to
many of the developed Western economies.
The expectation is that the disparity in growth rates will continue over the next several years. China and India are forecast
to experience the greatest growth in GDP per capita to 2018.

will significantly lag China, India and other parts of Asia Pacific.
Economic Influences
Asia Pacific is influenced by a wide array of economic factors.
Demand for decorative coatings is affected by new construction,
housing activity and overall affluence. Housing and construction markets has continued to flourish, albeit at a more modest
rate, in China, India and other parts of developing Asia Pacific.
As an example, new construction spending in the United States
and Western Europe since the 2008 2009 recession has still not
reached pre-recession levels. Over this same period, construction spending in China, India and other Asia Pacific economies
remains well above the global average. This trend in construction disparity is projected to continue over the near term.
At the most basic level, industrial coatings demand is a function of the production of end use OEM products such as automobiles, tractors, consumer electronics, furniture, packaging,
etc. It is important not to forget that coatings have continued to
get a boost from the investment in infrastructure development
being made throughout Asia Pacific, particularly in India and
China, including new bridges, landmark properties, alternative
energy facilities, nuclear power generation, hospitals, schools,
etc. Hosting world events such as the 2008 Olympics in Beijing,
the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and the 2010 Guangzhou Asian
Games has certainly continued to stimulate large infrastructure
projects. Much has been made of the changes in the automobile
market, with China supplanting the United States a few years
ago as the largest car producer in the world. But the transition
to the number one automobile market in the world is simply a
microcosm of the shifting manufacturing landscape.
The expansion of the global shipping industry including certain coatings advances made in this sector will continue to grow
the Asia Pacific marine coatings segment, already the largest in
the world, at approximately 70 percent of the total global volume. Ship building, maintenance & repair of ships and overall
sea trading have all declined in Europe and North America over
the past two decades which has also helped to drive these activities to the lower wage rate countries such as China and South
Korea. These factors will almost certainly secure Asia Pacifics
leading position in marine coatings for the next decade or more.
The overall trends in construction and manufacturing are apparent in the GDP data of the various regions. The data suggests
that Asia Pacific grew faster than North America and Europe
prior to the recession and significantly outperformed Western
Economies during the recession. Furthermore, recent data from
the International Monetary Fund, World Economic Outlook indicates that despite the slowdown in the Chinese economy as
discussed above, the disparity in growth is even greater in the
post-recession period than it was in the pre-recession period.

Continued growth is expected thanks to emerging markets.

he high performance and special effects pigments market

is expected to continue steady growth over the next few
years. Smithers Rapra, a global provider of consulting
services, conferences, training and market reports, recently published a report titled The Future of High Performance Pigments
to 2017. According to the report, developing markets are largely
responsible for continued progress.
Despite a global recession and sky rocketing raw material
prices, the market for high-performance pigments (HPPs) continues to grow, particularly in emerging markets like China and
India, the report stated. Increased demand for differentiation
and appearance in the packaging sector is driving growth, and
emerging print processes such as inkjet are also having a positive impact on this market.
A Growing Market
Regionally there is a significant difference in outlook and performance for high performance pigments. Chinas growth
rate has slowed, but it still is growing, said Michael T.
Venturini, global marketing manager, Coatings, Sun Chemical
Performance Pigments. We see the implementation of VOC
regulations driving changes in paint technology and subsequent modifications in pigments. Brazils economy has softened and has affected all segments of the coatings market. It
may be some time before we see Brazils markets return to
growth. Europes automotive sector is showing modest signs
of recovery, but the overall market remains very fluid because
of currency shifts. The U.S., however, is performing better than
other regions as a result of improved home sales and automotive sales. The automotive sector is a particular bright spot because of the trend toward trucks and SUVs and the increased
popularity of chromatic colors.
William L. Baker, vice president of North American
Operations Industrial at Sudarshan, said that the market has
shown continued demand and growth in both specialty organic
pigments and special effect pigments.
This, of course, is region-dependent, and the currency
challenges have taken a toll over the past year, he said. In
particular, dollar based production is more adversely affected

than Euro based production, thereby making manufacturers in
Europe at a recent advantage.
Baker said that China is a focus for Sudarshan because of its
growth potential.
China is a large opportunity for Sudarshan, as we have a relatively small market share in a country with strong growth and potential, he said. With our existing channels to market, we are finding
this region to have particularly strong growth for Sudarshan.
Falko Orlowski, executive vice president sales & marketing
at Trust Chem, said that, in general, the U.S. pigment market is
relatively stable and shows small growth.
Most customers work on raw material cost reduction programs, and that is where pigment manufacturers can find opportunities. On the high performance side, Trust Chem has seen
growth with new products such as PR202, PV19, PBr25, PY185
and PY155, Orlowski said.
In terms of its focus on emerging markets, Trust Chem has a
global sales network that is headquartered in Hangzhou, China.
We are greatly imbedded into the Chinese market with four
production facilities there, he said.
Orlowski added, The U.S. automotive market is still one
of the largest users for high performance pigments. With the
largest independent pigment lab in China equipped with an
automated spray booth, Trust Chem is increasing focus in
this area.
Our sales grow with double digit increases year over year
due to our success at bringing customers high performance pigments at fair prices, said Frank Lavieri, executive vice president and general manager at Lansco Colors. Lansco Colors
was the leader in bringing alternatives to previously patent
protected products and has grown to a market leading supplier
for high performance pigments. 20 years ago Clariant, Ciba
and BASF enjoyed patent protected monopolies for high performance pigments which are now gone. Not coincidently all
of these company names either are already out of the pigment
business or have announced they will jettison their pigment
businesses by 2016.

Increased Costs, Increased Performance

According to Baker, raw material prices are heavily dependent
on Chinese sources, which have a relation to the U.S. dollar.
This has put a significant squeeze on margins for dollarbased producers, he said. While we are mitigating some of
the cost increases with long term RM contracts and purchasing
strategies, the industry is feeling the effects of this squeeze.
In spite of the high prices, Baker maintained that the investment in high performance and specialty pigments is a smart one.
High performance, as the name implies, means they perform
better in processing and/or application with heat, light fastness,
chemical resistance, etc., he said. The significant change in the
market place is that the higher performance products are coming down in price, and as a result are expanding their share of
the pigment portfolio as they displace some mid and classical
performance products.
Orlowski agreed that costs associated with high performance
pigments are worth it when considering the advanced properties offered. Light and weather fastness, opacity and heat stability, which
are often vital depending on the customers end application, he said.
Moving forward, Baker said that high performance pigments
will continue to encroach on the mid- and classical-market prices.
As they do, he said, there is an inevitable displacement of those
inferior chemistries to some degree.Therefore, HPPs are finding
inroads to non-traditional markets such as architectural coatings,
industrial coatings, plastics, and even some inks markets.
The pigment market is highly competitive and Lansco Colors
said it is controlling costs while continuing to maintain the high
product quality and on-time-delivery our customer expect.
High performance pigments are necessary in applications and
end uses which require better durability, heat stability, migration resistance or other attributes not found in the lowest cost pigments,
said Lavieri. High performance pigments also bring attributes to
a coating, plastic or ink which saves money. For example repainting a house each year is more expensive than using paint made
with the Lansco Colors high performance pigments with longer
light and weatherfastness. As another example most plastic parts,
especially the food packages found in your grocery store, could not
be colored with conventional pigments due the high temperatures
used in plastics manufacturing. Finally high performance pigments
are alternatives to more regulated conventional pigments so they
are replacing them in sensitive end uses as well.
New Products and Technologies

Trust Chem has recently launched following new high performance pigments: PR202 and PV19 for automotive, industrial
coatings and plastic applications. PBr25 for automotive and
plastic applications has been introduced as well as PO67 and
PY185 for powder coatings applications.
We are continuing to develop new products in our research
and development laboratories in China to serve the global pigment market, Orlowski said.
Baker, of Sudarshan, said that the industry has not seen a new chromophore since the introduction of DPP chemistry in the early 1990s.
However, Sudarshan continues to develop improved
processing functionality of many of its core HPP range, including: PR264 for Coatings, PO64 for Plastics, PY110 for
Coatings, PV23 for Plastics, etc.
Lansco Colors has brought several new high performance
pigments to market recently. We are particularly excited about
Lansco 2093 Disazo Yellow 93 and 1242 Disazo Scarlet 242,
said Lavieri.Both of these pigments are alternatives to former
protected monopolies. Lansco 2093 is a green shade transparent yellow with excellent durability properties ideally suited for
the coloration of synthetic carpet fibers and other applications
requiring long term durability. Lansco 1242 has similar properties in the yellow shade red color space. We also have recently
launched a high performance inorganic pigment, LANOX
Synthetic High Temperature Black Iron Oxide, which has heat
stability of 1300 oF and high color strength. We are promoting
this pigment for automotive and gas grill coating applications.
Lavieri also said he sees potential growth for high performance
pigments to replace conventional pigments to meet environmental
regulations. An often overlooked, but important attribute of high
performance pigments is there eco-friendliness, Lavieri said. This
positions them well to replace conventional pigments as regulatory
requirements or customer demands require this. Just as diarylide
yellow pigments replaced lead chromate in the printing industry 40
years ago so could Lansco 2574 Hansa Yellow 74 or Lansco 2155
Azo Yellow 155 replace diarylide piments in printing inks some
time in the future. In fact this is already starting to happen in the
most sensitive applications and where brand owners demand it.
This trend of using more eco-friendly raw materials, represents the
greatest potential for high performance pigments.
Sun Chemical has launched a number of new products. Fanchon
Orange 36 high performance pigments for coating and ink applications have a high level of opacity and durability capable of replacing lead-based pigments in industrial mono-coat applications.
Sun Chemicals new yellow shade Perrindo Maroon 179 features the benchmark transparency that is vital to producing modern, high chromatic metallic red finishes, the company stated. One
of the most yellow pigment red 179 shades on the market, Perrindo
Maroon 179 offers excellent light and weather fastness, rigorous
process and quality control, compatibility in water- and solventborne systems, and is easy to disperse. The intense color of Sun
Chemicals red shade Quindo Violet 55 is 10 units more chromatic
than a similar shade Pigment Violet 19, thus expanding the styling
color gamut for coatings formulators, the company stated.
Sun Chemical introduced new fine particle size aluminum
flakes to its Benda-Lutz MAXAL EC range. The two new
products offer a superior level of brightness that is unusual
for their small size, while providing the same stain resistance
offered by the lines state-of-the-art EC encapsulation technology. Benda-Lutz MAXAL EC encapsulated pastes add
enhanced gassing stability in waterborne paint and provide
superior resistance to alkali and acid staining without impacting the optical properties of the base aluminum flake,
for a wide variety of applications including the coating of
automotive parts and accessories and outdoor architectural
coatings in powder and liquid paints. CW

Solar Coatings Highlighted

At Intersolar North America

he 2014 Intersolar North American trade show held in

July in San Francisco included coatings from a number
of companies targeting glass, plastic and metal performance. Most of these products are being used to extend the
lifetime and reduce operations and maintenance costs of solar
panels, metal foundations and other elements of solar arrays.
One coating that was new to the show this year is the
Magnelis steel coating from ArcelorMittal, based in Chicago,
which provides a self-healing corrosion-resistant surface that
is superior to heavy grades of galvanization. Magnelis slows
zinc runoff in comparable weathering of galvanized steel by
a factor of four, thanks to a three percent magnesium addition. The Magnelis ZM310 coating is 25 micrometers thick,
between two and four times thinner than a conventional galvanized steel coating.
A leading solar racking company utilizing Magnelis for the
first time is Mounting Systems, of West Sacramento, which is
roll forming steel instead of using aluminum, according to Don
Massa, the product manager for the companys Sigma Steel line.
Because the coating is self-healing, we can apply it before the
roll forming, he says. The forming of the struts permits the
company to include a bolt-head slot that reduces parts. And the
strength of the engineered strut enabled them to substitute a
four inch steel strut for a six or eight inch aluminum purlin used
in older designs.
Later this year, a waterborne polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)
coating for solar panel back sheets will be developed by Solvay,
complementing the companys roll sheets, noted PhilippeJacques Leng, the companys global marketing manager for specialty polymers. Solvay, based in Brussels, produces a wide line
of fluorinated polymers used in panel manufacturing, coatings
for other balance-of-system components and for maintenance
of solar arrays.
Among related solar products, Solvay also demonstrated its
new Halar 500 ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene (ECTFE) resin,
which is being utilized to produce a plastic front sheet that replaces the traditional glass sheet of a solar panel. Melbournebased Amcor has used the resin to develop flexible front sheets
that will facilitate the integration of PV modules into more complex shapes, the company notes.
Arkema is also considering a waterborne version of its Kynar
PVDF back sheet product for use in final coating solar panels,
according to Bernard Schlinquer, the global business manager for photovoltaics at the company, based in Cedex, France.
Arkema holds a patent for UV curable PVDF, which would
typically be the outer layer of a solar panel back sheet, bonded
by a curable adhesive to an inner polyester terephthalate (PET)
layer on the solar cells. Arkema currently offers its resin-based
Kynar500 for aluminum, galvanized steel, and aluminized steel
surfaces in buildings.
Cybrid Technologies also displayed its spray-on self-healing
solution for scratch-damaged solar panels at the show. The
Wujiang-based company also offers adhesive tapes for sealing
solar panels in various stages of production, notes Eric Yang, a
company representative.
Other PVDF suppliers include: 3M; Shanghai 3F New
Materials; Zhejiang Juhua; Shandong Dongyue Chemical;
Jiangsu Meilan Chemical; Daikin and Kureha. CW

Art and heritage are key to creating strong cities that people want to live in.

y the end of the decade, as many as 100 million Chinese

people will migrate from rural areas to live in cities.
According to Chinas State Administration of Cultural
Heritage, more than 900,000 villages have disappeared in the
past ten years as cities prepare for the influx, with high-rise
buildings, huge street blocks, industrial parks, multi-lane highways and shopping malls dominating the city-scape of cities
from Beijing to Shanghai and Chengdu.
These changing demographics come with a high cultural
price. Since 1990, more than 1,000 acres of historic alleys, traditional quadrangle houses and street shops have been demolished
in Beijing alone, accounting for 40 percent of the citys central
area. And its not just a Chinese problem: our heritage is at risk
of being wiped out in cities throughout the world, for a multitude of reasons and with far-reaching consequences beyond that
simply of the physical loss of objects, art or buildings.
But lets take a step back and ask ourselves first: why arent we
protecting our heritage? I believe that, the trouble is, heritage does
not really have an owner. Our post-Second World War culture of
subsidizing art, culture and architecture has created a negative
situation in which, as civilians, we no longer feel responsible for
maintaining our collective cultural heritage. This development is
compounded by the shrinking civic budgets to support the arts
and culture in the wake of the 2008 economic crisis, particularly
in Europe. For example, between 2012 and 2013, Dutch government funding for arts and cultural programs dropped 22 percent.
Through AkzoNobels Human Cities Initiative, we are trying
to redress the balance, encourage citizens to be proud of and
embrace their local heritage, and help preserve the places, spaces
and objects that make our cities unique. For example, through
the AkzoNobel Art Foundation set up to create an outstanding contemporary art collection for tomorrows generation we
open our art spaces up to local communities in and around our
sites and offices. It offers people a chance to engage with amazing works of art and inspires them in a way that only art can.
Heritage is not, of course, just about conserving the past; it is also
very much about the present and the future. In a 24-hour, always-on
digital world in which people prefer to order their groceries online,

rather than venture to their neighborhood stores (according to PwC,
almost 6,000 UK stores closed in 2014) local communities are being eroded and people are losing touch with those around them. Art,
culture and heritage can bring people together once more, installing
in people a sense of pride and belonging.
More practically, heritage can also help pay the bills. In fact,
making it to the UNESCO World Heritage list can increase per
capita income by more than ten percent in certain regions, according to data from the International Monetary Fund. In Amsterdam,
where AkzoNobel recently helped with the restoration of the
Rijksmuseum, tourist numbers have jumped to 2.45 million making it the most visited museum in the Netherlands in 2014.
Heritage also attracts talent. Take a look at this years Monocle
Quality of Life survey which ranks the top 25 cities in the world
which are considered to be the most attractive places to live and
you will see clear trends connecting the success of the winning cities, from Tokyo in first place, to Copenhagen, Vienna, Stockholm,
Munich and Zurich among the rest. Yes these cities embrace innovation and enable citizens to reap the full benefits of 21st century
living, but they also put a lot of effort into preserving their historical assets, creating real but relevant places that people want to
live, work, invest and raise a family.
So the next time a city or government thinks about cutting
its culture budget, I would urge them to seriously consider the
many additional benefits of having a strong physical and cultural heritage. They will certainly find the consequences go beyond
the past and stretch far into the future. CW

Emerald Kalama Chemical to Break Ground

on $40 Million Expansion at Rotterdam Site

Performance Materials, announced
that the companys board of directors has
approved the plan to add a second benzoic acid purification and finishing process
at its facility in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
The new process will add an additional
100,000 metric tons per year capacity of
high purity benzoic acid (Purox B) and
also provide an increased production capability for benzaldehyde. The project is
slated for completion in late 2016.
The company previously announced it
had begun engineering the expansion in
April, which would focus on high purity
benzoic acid to support growing demand
for the companys Kalama and Purox
brands of benzoic acid flakes, sodium
benzoate granules and liquid benzoic
acid, which it provides for food and beverage, personal care, pharmaceutical and
a variety of industrial applications. The
main products from the companys reactor train benzoic acid and benzaldehyde
are key intermediates used for the production of important downstream products, notably K-FLEX plasticizers and the
Kalama aroma chemical line.
Reassessing our long-term strategic
plan for our key intermediates, our expectations for benzoic acid continue to
show strong growth and track according
to plan,said Hubert Degens, vice president of the Emerald Kalama Chemical
Benzoates and Intermediates business.
In addition, our recent acquisition of
Innospec Widnes Ltd.s aroma chemical
business and growth plans for that
platform are in line with our increased
production capacity for benzaldehyde.
The company has been producing benzoic acid at its Rotterdam and
U.S. operations for more than 50 years.
Emerald Kalama Chemicals portfolio of
benzoic acid products is FDA-approved
and GRAS-classified. The Rotterdam operation is also certified to meet or exceed
a number of important quality standards,
including ISO-9001, ISO-14001, HACCP,

the launch of a new hyperdispersant reactor at its Avon Lake, Ohio facility. The
unit will be used for the manufacture
of Solsperse hyperdispersants. Through
excellent dispersion stability, Solsperse
hyperdispersants enable premium levels
of appearance and performance while
driving improvements to manufacturing
efficiency and quality in the production
of a wide ranges of paints, coatings, colorants and inks. The launch follows recent
expansion of hyperdispersant capacity in
Europe. Taken together, the recent actions
in the U.S. and Europe will significantly
increase Lubrizols ability to produce
Solsperse hyperdispersants to meet growing demand worldwide.
Commenting on the new U.S.-based
capacity, Tom Keir, director of product
management, said, Our investment in
this new manufacturing unit underlines
our commitment to bringing high-value
dispersant chemistry to the global market. The improved efficiency and operational flexibility offered by this added
capacity, coupled with our recent expansion in Europe, will enable us to provide
our customers with a diversity of options
to meet their needs.
The addition of the new reactor required additional operator resources as
well, growing the number of employees
at the Avon Lake facility by five percent.

a vacant 96,000 square foot structure
here and transformed it into a state-ofthe art Business and Innovation Center,
DelGuercio said. We expect to grow and
add 50 jobs over the next five years. In
addition, by locating the Center in the
Greater Richmond area, Evonik preserved 125 local full-time jobs.
With the new facility, Evonik more

(GBU) combining all of its pigments activities effective January 2016. In the second half of 2016, BASF intends to carve
out its pigments business and establish
separate legal entities.

WACKER Honors Chemist

with Alexander Wacker
Award for Production of
Silicone Films
WACKER, the Munich-based chemical group, presented Dr. Andreas
Kllnberger with the 2015 Alexander
Wacker Innovation Award. The 41-yearold chemist had developed a process for
producing ultrathin silicone films. As thin
as 10 micrometers, the precision films
are very versatile. Due to their dielectric properties, they are ideal for use in
electronics, robotics, sensor systems and
medical technology, and enable the development of innovative products. The
award ceremony took place during the
Groups annual research symposium at
its plant in Burghausen, Germany.
This year was the fourth time that
the 10,000 innovation award had been
presented for product innovation. Dr.
Kllnberger and his team developed a
process to produce silicone films that
are only 10 to 400 micrometers thick.
The high-precision films are extremely
uniform, their thickness not varying by
more than five percent over their entire
area. The production process is fully automated and takes place in a closed system under cleanroom conditions. For the
first time, it is possible to produce silicone
film of very high quality and purity as roll
stock on an industrial scale.

properties, silicone films are
suitable for numerous industrial
applications. Since silicone is selectively permeable to gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, silicone films are
ideal for gas separation and for producing wound dressings. Moreover, silicone
films are of interest for developing novel
sensors and actuators. Due to their dielectric properties, they can be used as electroactive polymers in intelligent sensors,
artificial muscles, energy-saving electrical
relays and valves, and in the generation
of electricity.
Few companies have influenced silicon and silicone chemistry from the outset as much as WACKER, said Executive
Board member Auguste Willems in
his speech at the award ceremony in
Burghausen. Our portfolio of silicones
has grown to include thousands of
products. The outstanding work of Dr.
Kllnberger and his team has now added
another highly promising product.
Willems handed over the award during the 43rd R&D symposium, which, as
in previous years, was held at WACKERs
main plant in Burghausen, Germany.
The 2015 Alexander Wacker Innovation
Award attracted entries from 48 employees, including from sites in China, India,
Japan and the USA. Examples of the product innovations submitted ranged from a
terpolymer for formulating low-emission
tile adhesives through to new polyvinyl
acetate solid resins for gumbase and a
silicone fluid emulsion developed specifically for Asian hair-care products. This
year, the standard was again extremely
high, said Willems. All submitted product innovations are very promising, with
strong profits likely.

Micro Powders Announces

Laboratory Expansion
Micro Powders has completed an expansion of its Tarrytown, NY product development laboratory that triples the size of the
previous space. The new laboratory is flexibly designed to support product development activities for both the industrial and
personal care divisions of the company.
The new laboratory includes stateof-the-art ductless fume hood technology as well as a high-efficiency
downdraft booth to collect dust during dry powder transfer and handling.
Additional investments have been made
in new instrumentation, including a
high performance differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and additional
test equipment. These changes improve
MPIs abilities to design novel new
products, solve customer problems, and
perform application studies.

Union Process Builds

Larger Combination Laboratory Mill
nion Process, Inc. has built its first

combination mill comprised of an S1
batch mill combined with an SDM05 mill designed to operate as a bead mill.
Much like the companys HD-01/
HDDM-01 combination mill, this laboratory mill is a larger version of the same
principle. For customers who want the
versatility of being able to process both
fine and coarse material without purchasing two complete mills to accomplish this, the S1/SDM-05 combination
lab mill provides the option to run at
slower speeds (approximately 100 - 500
RPM) and uses media ranging from 1/8
to 3/8. The SDM option runs at higher
speeds (300 - 2000 RPM) and utilizes
grinding media as small as 0.25mm up to
2mm. The SDM option features a shaft
with specially designed agitator disks,
which are available in tool steel, stainless
steel, plastic, or zirconium oxide, and a
side discharge with screen.
Changing of the shaft speed requires
three steps:

Releasing the belt guard and motor tension (equipped with quick
disconnects)
Changing the belt
Restoring the motor tension and replacing the guard.
Changing the mill configuration requires the following:
Changing the tank assembly, which
is done by removing 4 bolts
Also changing the shaft.
This system is built on the S1 frame,
which offers many advantages, such as:
A shaft that moves up and down to adjust clearances for different media sizes
A tank that slides forward and tips
for media discharge and fast cleaning
Customers may choose from two
drive systems the electronic variable
frequency drive (explosion-proof or nonexplosion-proof) or the mechanical variable speed drive (explosion-proof). Either
system is available in a totally metal-free
configuration, if required.
DBC Offers Antifouling UV

Curable Resin
Double Bond Chemical (DBC), a manufacturer of photoinitiators and oligomers recently launched DM527 and
DM528 resins. DM527 and DM528
are primarily applied in the 3C sector,
covering PMMA, PC and PBC materials. These products provide a solution
to staining caused by lipstick, makeup,
pen ink,and sweat stains. These various
stains, when staying on the surface of
3C products for over a period of time,
cannot be removed easily and will cause
yellowish marks on objects. Now DBC
DM527 and DM528 can help to fight
against these issues. The two products
provide high stain resistance. DM527
is glossy, while DM528 is matt and the
two are over 3-6H solidity, hence are
highly stain-resistant with high surface
hardness. Traditionally is hard for matt
products to achieve good stain resistance, but these products help to solve
that problem. DBC expects that, with
these two novel innovative products,
manufacturers in the 3C sector plastic
coats will benefit.

Names Executive Director
Following the retirement of executive director Dave Lurie, the Powder
Coating Institute (PCI) has hired Goyer

Management International (GMI) to provide complete management services of
the association. Goyer Management will
oversee all day-to-day activities and operations of PCI.
Additionally, Goyer Management has
hired, and the PCI Board of Directors
has approved, Trena Benson as the new
executive director of the Powder Coating
Institute. Benson will manage all aspects
of PCI from membership recruitment and
retention, to educational programming,

Brilliant Group, Inc., a specialist in

Richmond, CA, announced the addition
of three members to its growing technical team.
Shaun Mihalick has joined as technical service representative, reporting
to Darren Bianchi, president. Mihalick

brings more than seven years of experience in coatings research and manufacturing, previously with AkzoNobel
Coatings. In this newly created position, Mihalick adds to the breadth and
depth of Brilliants technical team. He
has a bachelors degree in chemistry from
Willamette University.
He will support our customers and
distributors to facilitate successful product selection and use, Bianchi said.
In addition, Elizabeth Li has joined
as a chemist, reporting to Ray Peria,
technical manager. In this role, she
will support the overall R&D efforts of
the company. Li has a bachelors degree in chemistry from the University of
California, San Diego.

Goodguys Names Bobby Alloways

PPG-Painted Chevy Street Rod of the Year
Bobby Alloway-built car won the 2015 Classic

Instruments Street Rod of the Year award at the 18th
annual PPG Goodguys Nationals held July 10-12 at the
Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, OH. The car, a gleaming 1937
Chevy coupe owned by Chuck Rowe of Millington, TN was
a crowd magnet and featured Alloways signature deep black
PPG finish. Celebrated as the master of black, Alloway almost
always paints his custom builds black.
The Chevy was built at Alloways Hot Rod Shop where
he uses PPG products exclusively. The car was painted with
DELTRON DBU 9700 Basecoat and DCU 2002 CONCEPT
Clearcoat. It was Alloways third time winning the award; in
2001 he took the honors with a 33 Ford and in 2012 with
a 32 Ford. But multiple wins dont make the experience
any easier.
The whole thing is nerve-wracking, said Alloway. Its an
honor to win, but youre competing with the top builders in the
world, so you cant relax or get overconfident. You do the best
you can, make the car look great and hope the judges recognize
your work. Im thankful they did.
Alloway has been building timeless street rods since 1978, and
his shop in Louisville, TN has consistently produced award-winning vehicles. He is well respected for cars that sport an aggressive presence obtained through a blend of color, proportion and
pure powe in this case an all-aluminum McLaren Chevrolet

Big Block V8.
In addition to the Classic Instruments Street Rod of the
Year awards, Alloways honors include the Goodguys Street
Machine of the Year, Americas Most Beautiful Roadster,
Autorama Builder of the Year and the Don Ridler Memorial
Award. Earlier this year, the Chevy was named Best Hot Rod
at the 2015 Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, CA.
In recognition of his work, Alloway was inducted into the
Grand National Roadster Hall of Fame this year and the Rod
& Custom Hall of Fame in 2004.
The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association is one of the
largest rod and custom associations, with nearly 70,000 members around the world. The association promotes and produces
some of the worlds most dynamic automotive events including
the annual Nationals show in Columbus, Ohio. The Goodguys
Columbus Nationals is the organizations biggest show of the
year, with some of the top cars in the country competing for
major awards. PPG is the official paint supplier to the Goodguys
Rod & Custom Association. PPG exhibits at every national
and many regional Goodguys events, displaying the hot colors,
