U.S. Army Museum

bunker built in 1911 to defend Pearl

ancient Hawaii to Vietnam. M6

War Memorial
Natatorium
The War Memorial Natatorium is
located adjacent to the Aquarium. With
its beaux-arts style arched entry and
Olympic-sized saltwater pool, it stands in
memory of Hawaiian soldiers that died in
World War I.

Hawaiis royal family enjoyed private

estate living in Waikk for more than
500 years before the arrival of outsiders
in 1792. Royal estates were replaced with
luxury hotels and the landscape forever
changed with the building of the Ala
Wai Canal, diverting rain-fed streams
that once filled fishponds and pools in
Waikk, a wetland area of taro, sweet
potato and banana farms. Waikks rich
history is revealed through walking
tours conducted by Moana Surfrider,
A Westin Resort, Sheraton Waikks

Kualoa was one of the most sacred sites

on Oahu and is today included in the
National Register of Historical Places.
A special kapu (taboo) required all canoes
to lower their masts when passing Kualoa
in respect for ruling chiefs residing
there. Among its attractions today, the
Kualoa area includes an oceanfront
park and traditional Hawaiian fishpond.
In addition, visit the Kualoa Ranch, in

Kaena Point

Kneana Cave, Mkua

Ko Olina Resort

The dramatic lava shoreline of Kaena

Point was recognized as the sacred place
where newly released souls were met by
the souls of ancestors and friends and
carried from earth. The currents at Kaena
Point are dangerous year-round, with the
largest waves in Hawaii pounding the
cliffs during the winter months.

On the ma uka (inland) side of the road,

this enormous lava cave was reputed to
be the home of a shark-man deity known
as Nanaue.

The 43-acre Ko Olina Marina,

playground under the sun, features access
to four magnicent lagoons, miles of
beautiful shoreline, picnic areas, the
J.W. Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa,
Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, sailing,
sportshing and snorkeling excursions.
The 18-hole championship course is a
golfers dream with 16 water features,
multi-tiered greens and ocean-view
fairways. For romance or simply to
admire its unique beauty, stop at the
Ko Olina wedding chapel, with its prism
glass windows overlooking the Pacic.
And finally, celebrate Hawaiian culture
with song and dance at the ocean side
Paradise Cove Lau. NN1

Wet n Wild
Hawaii, Kapolei
Unique to Hawaii and only on Oahu,
Wet n Wild Hawaii is bordered by the

for the whole family. NN2

Kneaki Heiau,
Mkaha Valley
This fascinating 17th century temple,
deep in Mkaha Valley, was dedicated to
the Hawaiian god, Lono, and used as a
site for worship and human sacrices.

The last sandy stretch on the Leeward

Horseback Riding

One of the Islands most rewarding hikes

is the trek to the crest of Leahi (Diamond
Head). Youll pass through World
WarII fortifications before reaching
the 763-foot summit and a breathtaking
view of Waikk, Honolulu, the southern
coast and the blue Pacific. Bring water
and dont forget your camera! Close to
Waikk youll also find Mnoa Falls,
Waikahalulu Falls and Round Top Forest
Reserve. Or venture further afield to
Makapuu Head or the Aiea Loop Trail.

For a slightly elevated perspective, let

someone else do the walking and spend
a morning or afternoon exploring
on horseback. There are riding trails
throughout the Island and horses
available for every size rider and every
level of experience. Most trails combine
mountain scenery and forested solitude
with panoramic coastal views. Some
of the better-known riding areas are:
Windward Oahu at Correa Ranch and
Kualoa Ranch, and on the North Shore
with Happy Trails Hawaii. Beach
riding is prohibited except at the
Turtle Bay Resort.

Biking
What could be better than to feel the
fragrant tropical breeze against your
face as you bicycle along roads and trails
most people never get to see? Rentals
and guided tours are available, and if
you happen to be traveling on TheBus,
you can throw your bike on the rack
between touring stops. (Whether youre
on foot or on a bike, remember that our
Island ecosystem is fragile. Please stay
on the trail.)

RANGING FROM CASUAL MUNICIPAL LINKS TO ELEGANT RESORTS, OAHUS GOLF

not only superb challenges, but spectacular vistas: take your eye off
the ball and youre gazing at the broad stretch of the Pacific Ocean, lush rainforest or a
towering lava rock.

COURSES OFFER

Ocean breezes keep Oahus air clean

and sweet, but theyll challenge your
carefully calculated drive. The wind
partly accounts for the fact that you
will tend to find wide, forgiving
fairways. The ground is harder here.
The ball runs more off the tee, and
doesnt stop as quickly on the greens.
First-time golfers to the Island
should also be forewarned about
putting on Bermuda greens, which
are grainier than traditional Bentgrass
greens and more difficult to read.
The grain grows in the direction of
the prevailing trade winds, generally
from east to west, toward the setting

sun. Novice and experienced golfers

looking to polish their skills will find
helpful golf pros ready to provide
lessons to help you make the most
of your time on the courses.
Top-rated resort golfing can

Among surfers, Oahu is not only

an international destination, but
is acknowledged as the birthplace
of modern surfing. It was Duke
Kahanamoku, with his mile-long
ride in Waikk, who put modern
surfing on the map. During winter,
when waves can measure up to 50
feet high, there is no hotter spot on
Oahu than the legendary North
Shore, where the giant surf made
the names Waimea, Sunset, Pipeline
and Haleiwa famous. In the summer
months, the North Shore flattens out,
while the big surf hits the South.
Ready to stop watching and dive in?
Whatever your age, skill or interest,
there is someone who can teach
you to surf.

Tor Johnson

Overwater
Dont want to surf or snorkel? Body
surfing, body boarding and stand up
paddle boarding are popular alternatives.
Perhaps this is the time to try windsailing,
parasailing or hang gliding! Or try
windsurfing out by Leahi (Diamond
Head) or on beautiful Kailua Beach.
Theres wakeboarding (its something
like waterskiing, but wilder), kite
surfing (a combination of kite-flying,
wakeboarding, surfing and flying) and
stand-up paddle boarding. Stand-up
paddle boarding is a more tranquil sport,
unless youre good enough to surf!
Lather on the sunscreen, pack a picnic
and a towel, and paddle a kayak to one of
Oahus nearby moku, or protected islets.
Stroll the isolated beach, cool off in the
water, and then paddle back in time for a
refreshing shave iceor mai tai!

Underwater
Underwater Oahu is every bit as lush
and dramatic as the Islands topside
scenery. Snorkeling is great and there are
hundreds of sites around the Island where
youll find fascinating underwater life.
A hybrid of snorkeling and scuba,
snuba lets you breathe under water
without wearing a tank. If youre not
certified, dive shops around Oahu offer
classes, equipment and information on
dive sites and conditions.

Water Adventures
Oahus Beaches
With 112 miles of sandy shoreline, Oahu
has a beach for everyone. Whether youre
looking for high adventure on the waves,
romantic sunsets or a protected, familyfriendly swimming spot, its sure to
be nearby.
And while you may be familiar with
ever-popular Waikk Beach and highoctane surfing along the North Shore,
youll discover an almost unlimited
selection in between. Beach conditions
LOCATION

vary by direction, shore contours and

season. The South Shore has many
sheltered beaches ideal for family
outings, except in the summer, when
the surf is unusually high. The tropical
Windward Shore is a favorite destination
of windsurfers and sailors. The North
Shore is world-renowned for spectacular
winter surf along beautiful white-sand
beaches. The Leeward or West Shore also
gets enormous winter waves, but has many

excellent swimming beaches and

great fishing.
Always check conditions with a
lifeguard before venturing into the water;
changing tides, marine animals and
hidden coral may be hazardous. It is not
recommended that you swim in areas
where lifeguards are not present.

Stories of Oa h u

The quick definition of Hawaii
Regional Cuisine is its a contemporary
style of cooking in Hawaii today that
borrows from all the ethnic influences
you find in Hawaii.
I think the local people in Hawaii love
to eat. You know, people plan their days

Visitors may arrive on Oahu expecting a resort or a place to do business, and of

course those things are here. But Oahu is so much more. With its depth and
richness of culture, history and tradition, Oahu is a living tapestry, a treasure for
travelers and locals alike. Ancient priests and royals thrived here and left temples,
museums, palaces, churches and historic sites across the Island. Stories of the past
are explained in the graceful movements of hula, the flavorful traditions of lau
and the engaging sound of music and song. Even international trade, tourism and
surfing have made an indelible mark on Oahu. A melting pot of diverse people,

History

Early Discoverers

Plantations

Early Polynesian voyagers crossed

thousands of miles of ocean, bringing
with them food provisions, plants and
domestic animals, as well as knowledge
of ocean navigation based on the stars.
Here the Polynesians developed a new
culture while maintaining the social and
political structure of their homeland. The
Islands were divided into small kingdoms,
each ruled by its own high chief who
received guidance from a council of alii
(chiefs) and a kahuna (high priest). The
distinction between those with power
and the makainana (commoners)
was maintained through the stringent
enforcement of kapu (taboos, rules).

Until the late 1700s, the Hawaiians had

known of people only from neighboring
Pacific kingdoms. But with the arrival of
Captain James Cook in 1778, the lives
of the Hawaiian people were altered
forever. Captain Cook happened upon the
Hawaiian Islands during an expedition
in search of the Northwest Passage and
named them the Sandwich Islands for his
patron, the Earl of Sandwich.

The Hawaiian Islands were recognized

for their prime agricultural land, but
agriculture also impacted the Islands
political and social structure. Plantation
owners imported workers from China,
Japan, Russia, Korea, Puerto Rico,
Portugal, the Philippines and Europe,
many of whom settled permanently
and contributed their own traditions
to the appealing blend of Island culture
(and cuisine!).

battling for supremacy. In a series of

became the first of Hawaiis great
monarchs. Over the next century, each

vibrant traditions of Hawaiian culture.
Their contributions are visible today in
palaces, museums and other landmarks
throughout the Island.

Statehood
The Islands have played a strategic role
as a U.S. military command center, and
have offered an ever-tempting allure to
visitors from all parts of the world. The

During pre-contact Hawaii,

Hawaiians had the beat of the

of music. The Hawaiian
music we know today didnt
come into being until after
American missionaries arrived

introduction of stringed
instruments. Specific form,
melody, harmony and rhythm

A lei given with love

Hula
Few things are as universally symbolic
of the Hawaiian Islands as the longheld traditions of hula. Samoans, Maori,
Tongans, Tahitians and other Pacific
cultures dance, but only Hawaiians
hula. In the last 40 years, hula has come
to embody the aloha spirit and its rich
tradition has been treasured and enjoyed
by all who experience it.
Spiritually uplifting, hula conveys
the essence of alohagreat love, caring,
sharing, charity, kindness, compassion,
mercy, humility. While hula kahikoolapa
(traditional hula) is accompanied
by chants and percussion sounds
mimicking wind and surf, modern hula

The giving and receiving of lei, whether

made of flowers, leaves, shells, nuts,
seeds, feather or other materials is a
special way to express aloha between two
individuals. Lei are a sign of welcome,
congratulations, commemoration of
something or for no reason at all.
They always create a special feeling and
bond. Traditionally, lei are not gender
specific and given to men and women
equally. When given a lei, regardless
of material, wear it proudly. Also, be
mindful of what can and cannot leave
the state of Hawaii or enter your part of
the world as there are some restrictions.
Most shops selling lei can arrange for
your lei to be packaged and shipped
directly to your home.

Hawaiis two official languages

are Hawaiian (lelo Hawaii) and
English. There are only 13 letters
in the Hawaiian alphabet: A, E,
H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, U, W and
the okina (). The okina is a glottal
stop like the sound between the
ohs in oh-oh and is considered a
consonant. The okina (), or glottal
stop, and kahak (), or macron,
change the pronunciation and
meaning of the word. The 18
sounds in the Hawaiian language
are a, e, i, o, u, , , , , , he, ke, la,
mu, nu, pi, we, and w with a v sound.
The vowels are pronounced:
a like a in above
a like a far
e like e in bet
e- like ay in pay
i like y in city
like ee in see
o like o in low
o like o in sole
u like oo in hoot
u like oo in moon
Some vowels are diphthongs,
forming a single sound as in ai in
Waikk. In general, the consonants
are pronounced as in English with
the exception of w. W can be either a
v or a w sound.
A few words you should know:
aloha: a reciprical greeting of
affection; hello, good-bye
and more
lei: a garland given for
any occasion
kane:

man
keiki: child
mahalo: thank you; respect
ohana: family
pau: finished
wahine: woman

Essential Oahu
Flights

Climate

Honolulu International Airport (HNL)

is Hawaiis major airport, serving as the
entry point for most of the Islands
visitors. Twenty three domestic and
international carriers serve Oahu, so you
can get here from just about anywhere.
The Honolulu International Airport is
also Hawaiis hub for interisland flights.
The USDA enforces strict rules
regarding the importation of uninspected
plants and animals that can severely
change our fragile environment. Before
landing in Hawaii, youll be asked to
declare any such items. Department of
Agriculture agents will inspect and likely
confiscate them before allowing you to
continue on your way. For more
information, visit the Dept. of Agriculture
website at hawaii.gov/hdoa.

Weather can vary from one part of the

Island to another. It is generally drier
on the leeward side, wetter windward.
Generally speaking, there are two seasons.
Winter (November through April),
when temperatures typically range in the
low-70s to mid-80s, and summer when
the high can run into the low-90s. Trade
winds keep you comfortable year-round.

Dress Code
Attire is resort wear even at the most
luxurious resorts and restaurants. Theres
no need to bring a coat or tie unless you
want to dress up. Dress for comfort.
T-shirts, tank tops, polo shirts, shorts,
jeans, sundresses, sneakers and sandals
are all good choices. Temperatures are
cooler in the evening, making a sweater

and slacks a good idea. It is a custom in

Hawaii to slip off your shoes when
entering a home.

Oahu Travel Tips

Visit travelsmarthawaii.com to
find everything youll need to know
about traveling to and from Hawaii.
For water safety, check out
hawaiibeachsafety.org.

Transportation
Youll find it very easy to get around
Oahu. Rental cars are the most popular
option and they are available at all
airports and at some hotel and off-airport
locations. In addition, there are resort
and destination airport shuttles, shopping
express shuttles, guided tours and
taxicabs. For a public bus schedule, visit
thebus.org. Rental bikes, motorcycles and
mopeds are also options.

Time Zone
Hawaii Standard Time is GMT-10
(Pacific Standard Time-2, Eastern
Standard Time-5). Since Hawaii doesnt
observe daylight savings time, add one
hour to the time difference when in effect
(March through November).

Area Code 808

The area code for the entire state is 808.
For long distance calls between Islands,
dial 1-808 and then the number. When
placing calls to the U.S. Mainland from
Hawaii, dial 1, the area code and the
number. All calls within an Island are
local. Hawaiis cell phone law requires the
use of a hands-free device when using a
mobile electronic device while driving.
Many of Oahus larger hotels and
condominium resorts have high-speed
Internet access, including wireless in some
public areas.

Sun Sense
Youll want to show off a nice tan
when you go home, but please use
common sense when sunbathing in the

tropics. A sunburn will develop faster than

you thought possible, so be sure to use
sunscreen. Remember, its usually hottest
between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and the sun is
stronger here than youre probably used to.

Safety
The ocean is Oahus playground,
but there are precautions to observe.
Offshore winds and currents can be
powerful and change suddenly. That
means dont stray far from shore or head
out to kayak, windsurf or sail if warning
signs are posted or if conditions warrant
caution. If youre unsure about conditions,
ask a lifeguard. For information
about beach safety conditions, visit
hawaiibeachsafety.org.
If youre hiking into the wilderness,
observe all warning signs and, if
possible, carry a cell phone. Few places
are as safe as Oahu, but that doesnt mean
you should abandon all care as you travel
about. Lock your car doors and dont
leave any personal belongings in your
unattended vehicle.

Environment
The natural beauty of Hawaiis
fragile environment comes from its
geographical isolation from other

Protecting Oahu
Mlama I Ke Kai
Malama i ke kai (take care of the ocean)
is a Hawaiian tradition that you should
practice while visiting Oahu. This
means please dont touch the coral or
the plants and animals surrounding it. In
fact, keep a respectful distance from all
sea creaturesfor their safety and yours.

Mlama I Ka ina
Malama i ka aina (take care of the land)
is one of the more important concepts
in Hawaiian philosophy, and its as
important today as ever. Help take care
of natural resources by staying on trails
when hiking and not disturbing any
plants or historical features. Guided

tours are sensitive to the environment,

and you are sure to learn more with an
expert on hand.
Please recycle or properly dispose
your opala (trash) to avoid littering.
Reusable grocery bags are offered at
most stores. Numerous recycle bins
and redemption centers are located
throughout the Island.
Hawaii values healthy lifestyles
and fresh air. The City and County of
Honolulu and statewide laws prohibit
smoking in workplaces, enclosed, public
areas and within 20 feet of doorways,
windows, ventilation intakes, bus stops
and certain parks and beaches. For
more information, visit health.hawaii.
gov/tobacco/hawaii-tobacco-laws.

There are many

environmental
groups fighting to
protect the Island from
the stress of foreign
flora and fauna species.
You can help some of these groups by
volunteering time during your visit.
Volunteering for conservation activities
is a great way to have fun while
exploring the Island. You can sign up
for afternoon or multi-day trips to help
with a variety of projects. Most groups
will provide training, if needed.
Only with awareness and respect can
we be environmentally responsible.
When visiting, please do your part to
help protect our fragile ecosystem.
