SPBVA CANNON on the USS MIDWAY

for FLAG DAY SALUTE
Our cannon fired on the last note of the
National Anthem & for the Grand Finale

Presidents Message:
June 1st was the last First Sunday Living History program at
San Pasqual Battlefield SHP for
this season. We will start them
back up again on the First Sunday
in October.
We have been busy and will
continue to be busy the next few
months. Memorial Day at Fort
Rosecrans went well. We also at1

by Tom Vilicich
tended the Flag Day celebration
aboard the USS Midway June 14.
We took part in the celebration by
firing the San Pasqual cannon
from the flight deck of the Midway. As a Navy veteran, I had a
wonderful day.
The Fourth of July may have
happened by the time you read

this issue of Battlelines, but we hope

you join us for Old Town San Diego
SHPs Old Fashioned 4th of July.
Well be firing our cannon there as
well. Stagecoach Days in Old Town
will be here soon. The dragoons from
San Pasqual will be there on July 26
for Military Day.
Once again we attended the San
Diego County Fair on the last two
Kids Day Tuesdays. This is the ninth
year that we have been in attendance.
In the last issue of Battlelines, I
mentioned that the dress uniform of

Lt. James Clyman of the First Dragoons would be removed from San
Pasqual Battlefield SHP for conservation. Well, it happened in mid June.
The uniform has been replaced by a
reproduction of a US dragoon privates uniform. I have been informed
that all of the conservation work will
be videoed and that we at SPBVA
will be receiving a copy of the video.
Our SPBVA General Membership
Meeting will be held on Saturday,
October 4. All members are invited to
that meeting.

Please welcome our newest family
member to San Pasqual Battlefield
State Historic Park. Park staff recently hired Caitlin Meng as a Seasonal Park Aide to work the visitor
center and help out Senior Park Aide
Gilbert Garcia, when he is not available. Caitlin will also word at Old
Town San Diego SHP. So please
come by and say hello to Caitlin.
We also want to say good-bye to
Ranger Jesus Chuy SalinasRodriguez, and thank him for all his

influences to San Pasqual SHP and

Old Town San Diego SHP. Ranger
Salinas-Rodriguez took a transfer to
Torrey Pines State Beach, effective
April 1, 2014. He worked in the Historic Sector since early 2011 and was
a great addition to the historic parks
while he worked here. He brought
lots of energy, ingenuity, and a passion for history, all while keeping the
parks safe. Thank you for all your
contributions.

Rallying.
571.To exercise the troopers in rallying, the platoon is formed at the extremity of the ground, the sabers are
drawn, and the signal to disperse is
sounded; at this signal, the troopers disperse and charge as foragers; the instructor and the flank files remain in
place to mark out the rallying point.
When the troops are marched 150 or
200 paces, the instructor orders the rally
to be sounded.
At this signal, the troopers wheel to
the left-about, rejoin the platoon by the

shortest line, and resume their places in
the ranks.
The rallying should be executed rapidly but without noise, the troopers entering the ranks always by the rear.
.As soon as two-thirds of the troopers
have joined, the instructor commands
the platoon to move forward. The first
time, the platoon is rallied at the trot,
and then at the gallop. The movement
is repeated without retaining the flank
files; in this case the troopers rally
behind the instructor.
This is basically the maneuver that the
Californioss used on the US Dragoons
on December 6, 1846.

NAME THE 1st US DRAGOON PRIVATE of COMPANY C

by Tom Vilicich, SPBVA President
Now that Lt. James Clymans US dragoon dress
uniform has been removed for conservation and
replaced with a reproduction of a privates uniform, we thought it would be fun to give the
dressed manikin a name. Heres how it is going to
work. Choose a name from the list below of all the
privates of Company C, 1st US Dragoons at the
Battle of San Pasqual on December 6, 1846. (Our
list may not be complete.)
You can email your choice to Tom Vilicich at
trooper284@aol.com or you can come into the San
Pasqual visitor center and make your choice there.
We will announce the name with the most votes at
our annual membership meeting on October 4.
I have had the opportunity to meet relatives of
two of the privates from Company C who were
killed on that fateful day in December 1846.

Off the

Shelf...

by Shirley Buskirk

We met at the Park and Ride in Escondido

around 8:15 in the morning and by 9 a.m. we were
inside the county fairgrounds at Del Mar, pulling
our cart full of stuff and heading for the infieldthe Pavilion, to be exact. Thats where all
the non-profits have their booths and exhibits so
that was where we would spend the day. Except
for getting a quick lunch at a nearby food stand,
we were at our tables telling everyone who passed
by about San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic
Park and the re-enactment in December.
Most of the people had no idea what we were
talking about. Only one or two had been there and
one honest man admitted to driving by it all the
time, but had never stopped. We had better luck
trying to tell people where we were as some of
them knew where the Wild Animal Park wasor if
youre a newcomer, the San Diego Zoo Safari
Park.
We had a full complement of volunteers. Tom
Vilicich, our president, was dressed in his dragoon
dress uniform, wearing a hat with a horses tail

sticking out the top that makes him look at least

seven feet tall. When he drew his saber, childrens
eyes got wide as saucers. Gil Garcia, our park
aide, wore his Californio attire and his six-foot
lance also got peoples attention. Three members
of the Volunteer Association were in their green
volunteer vests, also answering questions, talking
about the war and the battle, handing out brochures and coloring pages to the kids.
So, what does this all have to do with the bookstore at the visitor center? It made me realize just
how much we need to educate people about Californias history. If you couldnt
field questions all day at the
fair, come in and buy a book
that will make you an expertor at least more
knowledgeablethen sign
up for the fair next year. Its
fun.
