This document discusses several issues related to immigration to the United States. It first defines legal and illegal immigration, noting that legal immigrants are lawfully recognized permanent residents while illegal immigrants enter a country against its laws. It then outlines problems faced by immigrants to the US, particularly those from Mexico, including discrimination, racism, and being suspected of terrorist activities. Next, it addresses illegal immigration as posing problems like overcrowding, increased crime rates, and costs to the US government. Finally, it examines reasons for the American "love-hate" relationship with immigrants, finding economic conditions to be a major factor as anti-immigrant sentiment rises in times of economic downturn.

What is Immigration
Immigration refers to the movement of people to another for permanent
residence. Immigrants are of two types, legal and illegal. legal immigrants are those people who are living in another country as legally recognized and are lawfully recognized as the permanent residents . Illegal immigrants on the other hand are those people who migrate across national borders in a way which is not acceptable and is against the laws of the destined country. (Illegal Immigration Solutions , 2014)
Problems Faced by modern
immigrants to USA especially those from Mexico Every year many immigrants come to USA in hope of making there life better but things usually don't run as smooth as they predicted. Mexicans top the list of immigrants in the USA. There are numerous challanges being encountered by the immigrants to USA especially those that came from mexico . Discrimination , racism , suspected of being involved in terrorist activities rage of american citizens towards them are a few problems being faced by the immigrants. Discrimination towards immigrants is prevalent in America and is usually directed towards latin americans ( which also include people of mexico), african americans and muslims. Military and schools are a couple of institutions where there is a lot of discrimination in USA . ( Oluoch , 2012) The immigrants are also exposed to racism and are seen by many americans with hatred and whenever there is an economic downturn its the immigrants especially from mexico who are blamed as according to many american citizens , the immigrants just increase the supply of labour and take their jobs by offering services at a lower price. ALong with racism due to these facts the immigrants are sometimes seen by many americans as enemies and there has been a growing trend towards increasing security at the border between america and mexico. After 11 septemper 2011 the immigrants (especially muslims) have also been arrested on many occasions just on mere speculation of them being involved in terrorist activities.
Issue of Illegal Immigration a problem
for the US Illegal immigration is leading to problems of overcrowding , rise in population , increased crime rate and a burden on the US government in monetary terms. According to a report there are as many as 12 million people living in USA without legal documentation.Illegal immigration has imposed huge costs (monetary and crime related) on the american society.According to a study between 1996 and 2006 almost 240000 illegal immigrants had commited about 960,000 sex offences in the United States.Illegal immigration also have very high fiscal costs on the US economy.According to centre for immigration studies illegal immigrant households in 2002 imposed costs of around $26 billion on the Us government while paying only $16 billion in taxes creating a deficit of $10 billion. One of the biggest reason behind this deficit imposed by illegal immigrants is that almost 60 percent of them do not have a high school degree. (illegal Immigration , n.d.)
Reasons behind Love/Hate
relationship of US with Immigrants America's love/hate relationship with the immigrants is generally as old as the republic and its criteria has not changed since its inception. By love/hate relationship here it is meant that there are times when immigrants are treated with animosity and considered bad for the
country while on other occasions they are welcomed in US and people
don't tend to bother much about their entry in US. Reasons such as increase in crime rate and public support for those immigrants who donot pay spark hate in reltionship of Us towards the immigrants. The most important reason behing the love/hate relationship is not the fear of crime or the public support but it stems more from the feelings of economic well being. American society closes the door for immigrants during poor economic conditions and turn against them while when the employment level is full and cheap labour is required they turn to immigrants and welcome them in their country.According to the harvard professor Ben Friedman a fair and tolerant society deopends on the economic well being of the country. According to him better economic conditions lead to growing acceptance of immmigrants in United States and other countires as well. (Macdowell, 2006) After 9/11 the the attitude of american society towards muslim immigrants has also changed and there are more and more restrictions being imposed by americans on the muslims due to threat of Taliban and Al qaeda.
