Friday 22nd November INSERVICE DAY
SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENING
The College was abuzz with activity and questions at Thursday
evenings well attended Open Evening. The event started with
Ms Hughes giving a clear overview of what should be
prioritised in selecting a Sixth Form College and the A Levels
that will be best tailored towards the next stage, be it
university or otherwise. To this end, she stressed St Bedes
sees itself as providing an aspirational Sixth Form. If the
Russell group is to be considered, choices are strategised from
the outset.
It was the current and returning Sixth Formers who gave the
best insight into life in the Sixth Form. The panel gave honest,
thought provoking and good humoured responses to reflect
the situation as they find it at St Bedes. Other students took
the initiative to run tours, provide refreshments and generally
share their experiences which were particularly relevant to
those showing interest in applying from outside our upper
school. Application forms and further information can be
accessed by contacting Mr Strange, Head of Sixth Form at the
College who will be delighted to let you have curriculum
details and answer any questions you may have.

SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FESTIVAL
In the last couple of weeks of Term 1, 30 year 10 actors and
one lighting technician took part in the Shakespeare Schools
Festival by performing a version of Romeo and Juliet at the
Redgrave Theatre in Clifton. The piece had Dance sequences,
sword fights, family feuds and lover's exchanges, but what was
most impressive was the cast's engagement with the beautiful
Shakespearean language. The piece was an overwhelming
success, loved by organisers of the festival as well as our
paying audience. Well done to all involved.
CHARITY DAY
Pupils and staff dressed in House Colours last Friday to raise
money for Children In Need and Philippines Typhoon appeal.
We have raised a total of 1,000!
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this
disaster.
PARIS 2014
Good news! The trip to Paris in March 2014 is going ahead and
letters will be sent out shortly for the second instalment.
SENIOR MATHS CHALLENGE

On Thursday 7th November, 2 Year 12 and 4 Year 11 pupils
took part in the Senior Maths Challenge.
Michael Savery achieved a Gold certificate, and goes through
to the next round.
Freya Buckley-Stait achieved a Silver.
Abigail Mounter and Ella Hjarne achieved a bronze certificate,
while Alex Selway and Louise Mason came very close, with
strong scores.
Well done to all these pupils!
A NIGHT AT THE OPERA!

On the 5
November, most
people were out in
the cold watching
fireworks!
However many
Key Stage 4 pupils
and their teachers
had a much better time! We went to the Bristol Hippodrome
to see world renowned opera Tosca written by Puccini.
Although I expected to be bored by the three hour long
performance, I was captivated by the entire show and kept on
the edge of my seat, despite not being able to see the
subtitles! I think that everyone thoroughly enjoyed
themselves and we are looking forward to our next trip to the
Hippodrome to see West Side Story in January. Ben Whitfield
COMPETITION WINNER
Congratulations to Year 11 pupil Cameron Collins who was
one of two winners in a recent competition in the
Independent newspaper. He was asked to write 100 words on
"We should remember the First World War because...".
Cameron received a signed Michael Morpurgo book and an
offer of two tickets to see 'Warhorse' in London. Well done,
Good work!
ACCESS TO BRISTOL
Seven of our Year 12 pupils have been given a wonderful
opportunity by the University of Bristol to participate in the
Access to Bristol course this year. This will benefit them both
in terms of their preparation for university life and will mean
that they are guaranteed the offer of a place at the University.

CBBC JUNIOR BAKE OFF COMPETITION

On the 5th August 2013, I was in the
Bake off Tent, competing with 3
other Junior Bakers to claim a place
in the semi- final of Junior Bake Off.
I was privileged to meet 2 of the
most successful Master Bakers in the
UK, Mary Berry and James Martin,
who judged both challenges. The
technical challenge consisted of making an immaculate melt in
the middle chocolate fondant, topped with a raspberry coulee.
After this came the Show Stopper Challenge which was to
create a jungle themed cake. I decided to focus on just one
jungle animal for my cake ... The Monkey!
I baked a banana cake and shaped it into a monkey, after this I
decorated it with chocolate butter cream, edible food paint
and fondant icing bananas. The judges liked my cake and also
gave me some constructive feedback, so that I would be able
to develop my baking skills
even further. The show was
broadcast on the CBBC
channel on 12th November
2013, and even though I
didn't win, it was an
amazing opportunity, and I
enjoyed every second of it!

PRIMARY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
On Thursday 14th November the Community Sports Team
organised a basketball tournament for primary schools in
North Bristol as part of the National School Games initiative.
The event was supported by the Bristol Flyers Basketball club
who sent down a team of players to referee and officiate. Five
schools attended with over eighty boys and girls getting the
opportunity to play basketball against each other, some for
the very first time. The schools that took part on the day were
Avon Primary, Elmlea Juniors, Westbury Park, St
Bonaventures and Henleaze Juniors, whose 'B' team ran out
the eventual winners. The next event in the primary school
games calendar is the Sports Hall Athletics taking place over
two days after school on November 27th and 28th.
FREE SUNDAY MORNING ADULT FOOTBALL
The St Bede's Community Sports Team, in partnership with the
FA's Just Play programme, are offering 10 weeks of free adult
Sunday morning football here at St Bede's. The sessions start
on Sunday 24th November from 11am-12pm and will take
place indoors in the sports hall and are aimed at anyone aged

YEAR 11 PROM
A reminder that next years prom will be held at Redwood
Hotel and Country Club on Friday, 27th June. A one-off
payment of 25.00 is now required as soon as possible please,
this will include a welcome cocktail, buffet supper and disco
until 12.00 midnight. This is the same venue as last year as it
was such a success.

CATENIAN PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST

In the last issue of our Newsletter we were delighted to
inform you that Ben Whitfield and Alex Selway were awarded

SWITCH OFF FORTNIGHT
From 25th November - 9th December St Bede's will be taking
part in Switch Off Fortnight. This is a scheme that encourages
children to switch off appliances when they are not being used
and to ensure that any appliances left on standby are turned
off at the wall as they are still using energy! The Eco Club will
be going around the school to make sure that teachers are not
being wasteful of energy in their classrooms and we will be
running some activities that will promote this cause. We
encourage everyone at home to be mindful about turning off
lights and appliances when not in use. Hopefully there will be
some Eco-minded students to help remind you to save energy
and money!
FESTIVAL OF REMEMBRANCE AT THE COLSTON HALL
Congratulations to Year 7 pupil Hannah Davies who recently
performed at The 2013 Festival of Remembrance at the
Colston Hall. Hannah plays Bb Clarinet and is the youngest
member of the Royal Air Forces Concert Band based in Locking
Village. Well done Hannah.
ROTARY YOUNG CHEF COMPETITION

Congratulations to Rhia Bebbington, Mark Thorn and Chris
Tunks who last night competed in the Rotary Young Chef
competition. Toby Gritten, Head Chef from 'The Pumphouse'
restaurant was there to judge the dishes and give out awards.
Chris came third in the District competition and Rhia and Mark
were both awarded special commendations for their dessert
dishes. Mark made a lime and coconut souffle (an extremely
high skill to pull off under competition pressure) and Rhia
made a chocolate fondant which Toby said was worthy of
being served in his restaurant. Well done.
RECREATIONAL SPORT CLUB
Recreational club is now up and running pupils in Year 7 and 8.
Pupils can participate in a variety of sports on offer. Monday
3.30pm - 4.30pm.
