The Most Holy Trinity

Matthew 28:16-20
"Go, therefore, and make disciples
of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit." It's easy to
take this formula for granted. Every
time we attend Mass, we make the
sign of the cross and say, "In the
name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit." Many of us
also make the sign of the cross
before meals or to begin our
personal prayers. Because we are so
used to hearing this Trinitarian
reference to the one God in three
persons, we might tend to gloss
over its significance. But today, on
the feast of the Most Holy Trinity,
we stop to remind ourselves what
this really means.

Perhaps the most beautiful part of

this great mystery of God's nature is
what it means for us. We believe in
a God whose very essence is made
up of loving relationships between
three divine persons. It follows that,
as people made in God's image (cf.
Gn 1:27), we are to live in loving
relationships. We are made to love:
to love God, to love one another,
and to love ourselves. Our God is
not a force, a power, or an idea. Our
God is a personal God who loves
each of us and calls us to do the
same.

The Communion Rite

follows the Eucharistic
Prayer, leading the faithful
to the Eucharistic table.
The rite begins with the Lord's Prayer. Jesus
taught this prayer to his disciples when they asked
how to pray (cf. Mt 6:9-13, Lk 11:2-4). In this
prayer, the people join their voices to pray for the
coming of God's kingdom and ask God to provide
for our needs, forgive our sins, and bring us to the
joy of heaven.
The Rite of Peace follows. The celebrant prays
that the peace of Christ will fill our hearts, our
families, our Church, our communities, and our
world. After a short prayer, the celebrant says
The peace of the Lord be with you always, the
congregation responds And with your spirit and
then the celebrant or the deacon invites the congregation to offer peace with one another. As a
sign of peace, the people then extend to those
around them a sign of peace. Please note, you dont
need to move around to greet people. You may
greet the person next to you, on your left and
right, and if convenient back and front as well.
Greeting is simple, you can turn toward the person, and either say peace be with you or shake
hand or give a gentle hug. It is symbolic where
you wish peace to everyone, not only the person

you greet. The congregation then recites or sings

three times, Lamb of God, who takes away the sins
of the world .
As the congregation sings Lamb of God, the celebrant breaks the consecrated host. John the Baptist
proclaimed Jesus as "the Lamb of God who takes
away the sin of the world" (Jn 1:29). The action of
breaking of bread recalls the actions of Jesus at the
Last Supper, when he broke bread before giving it
to his disciples. This also reminds us of the broken
body and the bloody sacrifice on the Cross at Calvary. One of the earliest names for the Eucharistic
celebration is the breaking of the bread (Lk 24:35;
Acts 2:42, 46), which clearly and powerfully brings
out the significance of Jesus sacrifice on the Cross.
Before receiving Holy Communion, the celebrant
and assembly acknowledge their unworthiness to
receive so great a gift. The celebrant elevates the
Body and Blood of Jesus and says Behold the
Lamb of God called to the supper of the Lamb.
The congregation responds, Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only
say the word and my soul shall be healed. The
celebrant receives Holy Communion first followed
by the Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist
and then the people come forward to receive the
Body and Blood of Christ.

The next time you attend Mass take time to focus
on the peace you received and gave to others. Utilize this reflection to prepare yourself and your soul
as you are welcomed to the altar to participate in
Christs sacrifice. Make a concerted effort to carry
this peace with you throughout your busy day and
week and ask yourself, how can I be an inspiration
and example of Gods love and peace to those
around me, at home, in the work place and in my
neighborhood?

CRS Second Collection Last Weekend:

A Big Thank You!
The second collection last weekend was for the victims of the earthquake in Nepal. Your participation
was very overwhelming and I appreciate your generosity and a big thank you to everyone who participated in this relief effort. As mentioned, the proceeds of the collection will be sent to Catholic Relief Services (CRS) which is directly coordinating
the relief work in Nepal. Additional information
can be found at www.crs.org and www.usccb.org.
The earthquake killed over 8,000 people and left
survivors with little shelter, food or water. CRS is
providing 10,000 families (50,000 people) with
emergency shelter materials, blankets, water treatment and hygiene kits. Given the scale of the disaster, the agency expects to expand relief activities to
additional families. CRS is working with Caritas
Nepal to identify the most pressing needs in the
hardest hit districts between Kathmandu and
Pokhara, and will scale operations accordingly.
If you were out of town last weekend, you may still
send a check to Santa Sophia Church. Checks may
be made out to: Santa Sophia Church. All donations
will be forwarded to CRS to continue its relief
work. Your generosity is always greatly appreciated and God bless.

MEET YOUR SANTA SOPHIA PARISH COUNCIL MEMBERS FOR 2015-2016

Dennis Bauer and his wife have been
members since 1980 and Dennis has also
been active with Knights of Columbus,
Italian Catholic Federation and Men's
Small Church group.
Laura Braden and her husband Damon have been members of Santa Sophia
since 1999. Their six children have all
attended the Academy and have made
most of their sacraments here. She
is thankful to be serving her fellow
parishioners on the Parish Council.
Judy Corcoran is married with 4 children and 4 grandchildren. She was a
teacher and Vice Principal at the Academy for 17 years, and has served as small
church group leader and Eucharistic
Minister.
Chris Dameron and his wife Cynthia
have been members of Santa Sophia Parish for more than 20 years. During that
time he has served as a leader and active
member of music ministry at the parish.
Patrick Esquibel and his wife Bonnie
have been have been at Santa Sophia
Parish since 1994. He enjoys being an
active member with the Knights of Columbus and serves as a Eucharistic
Minister.

Maria Kareh has been a parishioner at

Santa Sophia for 30 years. Through the
years she has been a catechist and Eucharistic Minister. Maria is honored to serve
this community as a member of the Parish
Council.
Marilyn Lauer became Catholic in 1988
when she attended the SS RCIA program.
She is a retired junior high school teacher
and has served on boards of addiction
recovery programs.

Patricia Payne has been active in Pastoral

Council, Diocesan Pastoral Council, Parish
Life Team, Eucharistic Ministry and the
Academy. Over the years she has also been
involved in music ministry, religious ed.,
homebound/hospital ministry & youth
ministry.
Dennis Regan has been at Santa Sophia
parish since 1984. He has been engaged in
Junior High and Confirmation Religious
Ed., Baptism prep. and our Common
Ground Collaborative, serving disadvantaged students.

Anne Riemann has been a parish member

for 35 years. She facilitated Special Religious Ed. for several years. She was a
member of the RCIA team for 6 yrs. teaching Inquiry, and is currently a Eucharistic
Minister & parish office volunteer.

Greg Galarpe is a graduate of the Academy and has been involved in Santa Sophia since childhood. He has been active
in Pastoral Council, the Academy, Parish
Life Team and Eucharistic ministry.

Rachel Smith is currently serving the parish as leader of the Young Adult Ministry
and as a lector. Her devotion to the faith
has led her to feel called to the religious
life and she is currently discerning with
the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred
Heart of Los Angeles.

Diana Garra is a retired teacher and

active member of the Santa Sophia Safe
Place Faith Community, a lector, a Catholic Daughter, an ICF member and a volunteer for El Nido and the parish
rectory.

Terry Valverde has been a member of

Santa Sophia parish for 36 years. She has
taught religious education classes, been
active in El Nido and SAFE PLACE. She
recently retired after 37 years of teaching
history at Cuyamaca and Mesa Colleges.

Vince Genna graduated from the SS

academy and his wife Julie, teaches at the
academy. In addition he is a multispecialized Nurse Practitioner at UCSD
Health System in La Jolla, with both the
Moores Cancer Center and surgical
specialties.

Jimmy Villalobos and his wife Chris

joined Santa Sophia Parish in 1979. Jimmy
has been involved in Cursillo, Bible Study,
Small Church Community and Pastoral
Council over the years. Jimmy has been in
the financial services business for over
thirty years.

El Nido is a transitional housing program for women with children who are

escaping domestic violence. For decades we have sponsored an apartment and

it is, once again, time to restock it for a new family.

letter from their parish priest giving permission to attend Santa Sophia's religious education classes.
