Pastors Corner
I want to thank all of those who attended the concert last Sunday night to hear the Joyful
Noises quartet. A special word of thanks to the quartet itself and the four members who
make it up: Bob Rosenberger, Peter Wilson, Doug Malefyt, and Tom Salmon. Their
humor, goodwill, and fantastic singing voices made it a special night for all of us, and
$450 will go to the Charitable Energy Program of the Pocono Alliance, thanks to your
generous contributions.
As I am writing this on Thursday afternoon, we will be hosting a not-so-fun experience in
our Sanctuary tonight. Due to several recent suicides of young people in our community, Scott Kuhnle and
I have organized a prayer service for the community as a first step in addressing this epidemic facing us.
We have over 14,000 views on our church's Facebook page and more than 350 "shares," meaning this has
touched a nerve among our community members. We expect the turnout to be quite large, and many of
our Stephen Ministers will be on hand to help attendees to process their grief. In the future, I hope that our
church, working collaboratively with others in the community, can put together a comprehensive strategy to
address the underlying causes of suicide among young people (and ALL people!). Please be in prayer for
all of the families, schools, and communities affected by suicide. It truly affects all of us, and we all need to
seek God's guidance and work together to prevent further loss of life.
The St. Patrick's Day Parade between the two 'burgs will take place this Sunday afternoon. There is both
an upside and a downside. The downside is that it may be more difficult getting to church and getting home
on Sunday, especially after the 10:45 am service. The upside is that we have an opportunity to reach out in
love to our community by offering a word of cheer and a bottle of water and some chocolate. The parade

route does not come directly past our church, but comes close by. At the
corner where Courtland, Washington, and Day Streets all meet, there is a
former auto repair facility, now empty. We have received permission to
set up a hospitality tent there to provide free food and drink. We plan to
be there, and to mingle with the crowds, from 1-4 pm. If you want to help,
come prepared for the weather and possessing all your enthusiasm.

I'm looking forward to worship on Sunday morning, as I share the Palm
Sunday pulpit with Brandon Robinson. Brandon is one of our young
people who has felt God's calling to mission and ministry, and I see part
of my role as pastor as encouraging and giving opportunity for people like
Brandon to explore their calling. I hope to see you there as we begin Holy
Week together!

Read the Bible in a Year

In todays world of automated


phone messages it is difficult to talk to a
real person. We are often told to please
wait for the next available
representative. Waiting is something I
believe most of us dont do well. In this
weeks reading in the book of Numbers, we hear Moses telling the
Hebrew nation, Wait! even though they were on a 40 year journey in the
wilderness. In Lukes Gospel Jesus called his disciples, who had very
specific questions about who Jesus was. They wanted immediate
answers about what in the world was going on and how Jesus was going
to fix it! The answer came to them and it comes to us through the timing
of Easter.
I understand that when we question Gods timing, it is often because
we are looking for guidance or deliverance from a difficult situation. But
why do we so often have to wait? I believe our heavenly Father knows
exactly where we are during every moment of our lives. He either places
us there or is allowing us to be there, all for His own perfect purpose. In
fact, God often uses trials to strengthen our patience, allowing us to
mature in our faith. God does indeed hear our cries and His timing is
always perfect and right. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the
Lord rescues them from them all. (Psalm 34:19). The waiting was over
for the Hebrew nation as they entered the Promised Land. Our waiting is
over when we trust that the best is yet to come through the promise and
grace of Easter Sunday.

As we look at Jesus suffering, death,
and resurrection, we observe the
ultimate example of compassion. He
now calls us to follow his example and

ministry that provides a haven where
those in need of compassion can
receive it in a confidential relationship
with a Stephen Minister. Stephen
Ministers are currently available to
share Jesus compassion with you or

Contemporary Service for anyone who may
have trouble seeing the screens. If you need
a packet, please ask the ushers and they
would be happy to provide you with a copy.

Follow Up to CATCH Study


Thank you to all who participated in the
CATCH Study and then offered varied
suggestions how the program may be
implemented at ESUMC. Improving
signage, promoting our church to the
community, providing a welcome packet to
visitors and many other ideas are being
investigated and hopefully implemented.
But we need YOUR help!
Two new ministry teams are being
created in response to the needs identified
in the study: Marketing/Communications
and Evangelism. If you have a talent,
interest or spiritual gift for serving on one
or both of these teams, please contact
Peggy at (570-421-3280 Ext. 1023).
An organizational meeting for each area
will take place once all volunteers are
identified.
Dont hide your light under a bushel! Let
it shine to bring greater glory to our
awesome God!

New Church Directory During the weeks of May 16-21 and


May 23-28, a photographer from Re: Member Church Directories
will be at ESUMC to photograph our church family for a new
directory. All who are photographed will receive a FREE 8X10
portrait and a FREE directory! Sign-ups for photo sessions begin
mid-April.

Thank you to everyone who made Easter crafts and cards,


baked cookies, packaged the cookies, and delivered these gifts to
our homebound and nursing home resident members of ESUMC!
You brought smiles to the faces of folks who sometimes feel forgotten! Happy Easter!

Holy Thursday Soup Supper


Volunteers are needed to make soup for the
soup supper on Holy Thursday, March 24. If you
are willing to bring a crock pot full of your

HIKING.

The next hike will be on Sunday, March 20. Please meet at


12:15 in the parking lot. We leave at 12:30 SHARP. (note new
times). Februarys hike was at Tumbling Waters Trail, Vistas, Waterfalls,
60 degrees, what a beautiful day. Please pencil in above date and
commit to this very worthwhile activity.

than a tall kitchen garbage bags. Larger ones are too heavy to carry.
