3. It is desired to design a tank to store 10 k mol methane at 6.0 MPa and 300 K.
Determine the size of the tank using the Red-lich-Kwong equation of state. The
critical constants of methane are Pc = 4.60MPa and Tc = 190.6 K.

4. (a) An ideal gas ( =1.4) at 705K and 0.48 MPa enters a reversible and adiabatic
nozzle with negligible velocity and leaves at 0.11MPa. Calculate the exit
velocity of the gas.
(b) Define convergent nozzle.

5. A reversible heat engine interacts with four reservoirs at 1000K, 600K, 400K and
300K. It absorbs 2000 kJ energy as heat from the reservoir at 1000 K, rejects 600
kJ energy as heat to the reservoir at 300 K and delivers 1200 kJ work. Determine
the energy interaction with the other two reservoirs.

6. An insulated containers has 1 kg super cooled liquid at -120 C. Suppose a negligible
amount of ice is added as a seed to aid solidification, Calculate the mass of water
which solidifies and the change in entropy associated with the process. Cp for water
is 4.2 k J/ kg - K and the latent heat of fusion of water at 00 C is 333.43 kJ/kg.

7. Suppose a Carnot refrigerator operating between -260 C and 420 C consumes 0.7 kW
power. Determine the rate of energy removal (QL ) from the cold body. If a Carnot
heat pump operating between the same reservoirs is required, which rejects (QH ) to
the high temperature body at the same rate as the carnot refrigerator is extracting
from the cold body (QL ). Calculate the power consumption.

8. A definite man of mercury is heated from 1 bar 200 C to 440 C under constant volume
conditions. What is the final pressure, if:
= 0.182 103 K 1 ;
K = 4.02 106 (bar)1

5. An inventor claims to have designed a heat engine, which absorbs 1530 kJ and 170
kJ energy as heat from reservoirs at 1030K and 302K respectively and rejects 630
kJ energy as heat to a reservoir at 630K. It delivers 1070 kJ work. Judge, whether
the claim is acceptable or not.

6. A hot oil at the rate of 5500 kg/hr is cooled from 2100 C to 600 C in a heat exchanger
by using cooling water entering the heat exchanger at a flow rate of 2600 kg/hr
and 250 C. Assuming no heat losses from the exchanger, compute the total change
in entropy of the process. Whether process is reversible? Specific heats of oil and
water may be taken 2512.0 and 4186.8 Joules/kg-K respectively.

7. A refrigeration plant for a food store operates as a reversed Carnot heat engine cycle.
The store is to the maintained at a temperature of -5.50 C and the heat transfer
from the store to the cycle is at the rate of 5.5kW. If the heat is transferred from
