detached from the historical structure, leaving an intact
empty shell. In addition, the volumes are self-contained
and acclimatized, since they house all the necessary
functions for the transformation of the old train shed
into an event hall.

to an old cargo station, alternates between tunnels and
bridges. A recreational bike path will be built on top of
the old infrastructure connecting the site to the surrounding districts and in particular the various sites of
past or present industrial activity.

The concept was to establish a leading thread which
would connect the various areas around the Eindhovensch Kanaal while preserving their individual characteristics and emphasizing their qualities.

Assignment:
To design a contemporary colonizers intervention in the heart of Xochimilco, a
traditional neighbourhood built within the
Spanish colonizers grid.
Concept Manifesto:
Mexico City is bi-polar. This is expressed
through the stark contrast between the
night-time and the day-time situation.
While lively and vivid during the day, the
city shuts itself in at night in such an
aggressive manner that it renders itself
almost uninhabitable. This agoraphobia is rooted in the Mexican culture and
expressed through its architecture. New
architectural interventions should blend
in with the city and its habits while exag-

the cultural center faces the street with a flat Barragan-pink faade.
When the opening hour comes, this unsuspecting wall

opens up by means of four hinged tall doors. Once inside the entrance patio, one could chose to either enter
the gallery or go into the open-air sculpture museum.
The open-air museum runs along a stair. Its depth is emphasized by the adjacent seven-storey building and the
high black lava stone walls. The sculptures are housed
into square niches inside walls on both sides.
At the bottom of the stair one reaches a ticket-sales

counter, from which one could chose to enter the openair cinema or go inside a tunnel under the raised seats
with a stair leading to the rear of the building.

The Mexican people want to be heard;
their passion screams through their art,
dance and music, all of which make up
that colorful versatile culture. With the
new development plan at the center of the
Xochimilco district, they will be provided
with that opportunity. It will be a space
that enriches and supplements the existing social structure; a cultural center that
would house art, dance and film.

The cinema space has a direct connection to the dancing

halls, also at subterranean level, through a bright-green
perforated wall.

At night the open-air cinema would project not only to

its immediate audience but also to the rooftops of the
neighboring buildings. By allowing a voyeur view of
the movie, the complex could communicate and give
back to the whole block. Those who live there will profit
directly from the popularity of the cinema among more
remote residents of the district.

Walking towards the rear of the building, one reaches a

small patio with benches and then a small kitchen space.
A narrow passage leads back to the tunnel under the
auditorium seats.

Through a series of peek holes throughout the route,
one is triggered to explore the building further. The
resulting mixture of color and space sensations would
reflect and emphasize the Mexican experience, which
makes a lasting impression on anyone fortunate enough
to encounter it.

Assignment:
The purpose of this project was to design
a sustainable solution for the enclosure of
an experimental concrete structure real34
ized as a part of an ongoing research at

the university terrain in Eindhoven. The
Betonballon prototype was built using
a technique developed using the properties of membranes. In order to create the
greatest stretches of concrete using the
least material a pneumatic membrane was
used instead of the traditional molds.
Design:
The design exercise here was to create
a suitable faade for this extraordinary
structure. The design uses sustainable
materials in such a way as to maximize
insulation of the structure. In addition to
the double glass panels in the faade, additional thermal shutters have been fitted
to add a flexible insolative bubble. The
design incorporates a traditional thatched

roofing system covering the concrete
membrane. Besides from being an ideal roofing method for curved surfaces, it
provides a high level of insulation. Special attention is paid to the joints of the
structure. Sustainability here is not only
addressed during the construction phase
but also throughout the buildings life
through its material propertoes.

Opposite page: Together with the Faade Transplant a new

space is introduced into the apartment block. Instead of the
claustrophobic former space that was used only entirely for
vertical transportation, we propose a new spatial design that
will provide a good new atmosphere and function. It will be a
communal space that will provide a place for social interaction to the buildings inhabitants. Together with the faade
metamorphosis and the increase of ceiling height, a wooden
element is introduced that acts both as furniture and a faade
facing South. The organic design allows for multiple functions
and social arrangements, creating a unique ambience in the
communal space.
We believe that the strengthening of the sense of community

in a large building like this will not only improve on the inhabitants relationships amongst each other but it will, above
all, improve on the inhabitants relationship with the building
itself.

Assignment:
Light of Tomorrow is the overall theme
of the International VELUX Award. The
award seeks to challenge the future of
daylight in the built environment with an
open-minded and experimental approach.
Therefore, the award seeks to widen the
boundaries of daylight in architecture, including aesthetics, functionality, sustainability, and the interaction between buildings and environment.
Problem:
In the 20th century the exponential world
population growth concentrated in urban
areas called for high-density, high-rise,
highly efficient dwellings, built at low-cost

merous buildings have been erected in accordance with those principles in order to
meet the demand. Today these structures
are dismissed as inappropriate or of poor
aesthetic quality.
As advocates of the architectural profession we believe that the best way to address the challenges of the future is to
look at what is offered by the present.
There is an incredible potential to be
found in these largely underestimated
buildings.
Design:
For the purpose of this design we have
chosen for a deck access flat, typical of
the 1970s in Europe. This kind of apart-
ment block is characterized by its repetitive and painfully obtuse, albeit functional
and efficient design. The case study that
is subject to this particular design is a
twelve-storey apartment block with a single central transportation unit. The Unit
contains the main stair and elevator and
it leads to each of the hundred and twenty
identical dwellings on the block. The lack
of visual and aesthetic experience in the
building is further accentuated by the low
ceilings of merely 2.4 meters.
Although the individual dwelling units receive optimal illumination and despite the
fact that access decks have been designed
to be as efficient as possible, the quality
of light inside the building is lacking, es-
pecially in the transportation areas, such

as the one around the elevator and main
stair. That fact, combined with the low
aesthetic essence of the buildings exterior creates an overall inadequate image for
a building that should be called a home by
its inhabitants.
The design proposes a solution to this
problem.
We believe that the strongest characteristic of this rehabilitation design is the fact
that, not unlike the building it is destined
for, it is universal and it could be applied
anywhere where high-density dwellings
have been placed as stamps over the urban fabric.

Assignment:
To design a budget holiday resort in the
outskirts of Aba in Nigeria. The resort is
part of a social project aiming to free and

empower the Nigerian middle class.

Design:
The holiday resort functions as a hotel,
restaurant and family recreation.

requirements such as a restaurant, an
event hall with a performance stage,

the two words that have been so cleverly
fused to make up the name of the new Architecture Student Association.

Anarchy
An antonym of the word anarchy is authority, which is organized governance
with hierarchy as its main instrument. The
notion of anarchy eliminates any hierarchy
that might have been established by authority and governance.
In the design one may notice a hierarchical organization in the decrease in total
height as one reads the word (from left to
right). However, the seemingly strict organization has been disrupted by subtle
disorderly shifts, such as the slight overhang of the mirrored N, the fallen dot of
the i and its pushed-out shaft. It is as if a
natural degradation has taken its course,
slowly leading to the anarchical paradise.
Architecture
Architecture is as old as the first few
stones stacked on top of each other that
gave birth to it. The texture used on the
letters is that of black marble, a magnificent and imposing natural stone. It is only
fitting for marble to denote a discipline of
such firm grounds.

TU/e students and staff often have artistic

talents that normally remain hidden for a
larger audience. In this exhibition, to mark
the 55th anniversary of the TU/e, they got
the chance to show their work to a wider
audience. The unifying theme of this exhibition is the experiment, due to the
materials, the subject and the basic idea.
The theme of the competition that year

was light. The title of my work is Darkness Extinguisher.
To create it I used a discarded fire extinguisher I had found in a field nearby my
home. I then cut it open, wired it with an
LED bulb and poured wax around inside
to create the illusion of a candle burning.

Chandelier Design
Period: Fall 2014
Location: Utrecht
For this home project I was using various used bottles to create a dining room
chandelier. I experimented with different
glass textures and colors, also using glass
paint, and several ways of cutting the bottles to arrive at the final result.
For the bulbs I used the LED filament
bulbs. They have the look and the ambience of the classic incandescent bulbs but
with the benefits of LED technology.
