Text:
Two years ago, Craig Kielburger, a 12-year Canadian boy, founded Free the Children, a youth
organization aimed at ending child labour and encouraging youth involvement in community
service. He recently spoke with Newsweeks Susan H. Greenberg by telephone from his home in
Toronto.
Greenberger: Where did the idea for Free the Children come from?
Kielburger: I was reading the local newspaper. I came across an article about Iqbal Masih, a 12year-old Pakistani boy who was sold in slavery to work. However, at the age of 10 he escaped to
begin to defend the rights of working children in Pakistan and around the world. For that
reason, he was killed. And that attracted my attention because the boy was my age. So, I went
to my classmates and said This is what I know about it. This is what I want to do. Who wants to
help? And from that Free the Children was born.
Greenberger: Did you find other teenagers welcoming?
Kielburger: Absolutely. All teenagers were excited to the idea and they wanted to have a voice.
We started with about 12 young people in Toronto, and we now have groups in the USA,
Australia, Brazil and Singapore.
Greenberger: Your first big trip was to Southeast Asia. How did that trip affect you?
Kielburger: I met with the local organizations there and I realized we are on the right path: we
are supporting their efforts. If you sit down with a street child or a working child, if you look at
them eye to eye, if they tell you about their problems, their life, it does give you a new form of
encouragement. The only thing that really depresses me is when I ask the question what are
your hopes for the future? and often I get a blank stare.
Greenberger: Do you feel that adults listen to you?
Kielburger: Yes and no. Yet, many of our members are 8 or 9 years old. The big question was:
how can a group like this understand the issue of child labour? So, we did our research; we
began learning from local organizations and from the children themselves. Now, we have young
people who are able to stand up to debates with heads of companies or world leaders.
Greenberger: Can teenagers teach the world something that adults cant?
Kielburger: I think they can. Basically, who better understands the rights of children and their
situation than children themselves?
Greenberger: what do you want to do when you finish school?

Kielburger: A doctor. I would like to be part of MSF (Mdecins Sans Frontires: Doctors Without
Borders) because its like Free the Children_ we dont believe children are Thailands or Brazils
children; theyre the worlds children and thus the worlds responsibility.
