Did you lose a Ginger and
White Kitten 2 months ago?
On 4th July 2015 at 7.30pm a
ginger and white fluffy kitten, with
white feet ,was sadly run over on
Chapel Break Road close to
Tolye Road. Four cars stopped.
However It was clear that the
kitten had been killed instantly.
As there was no collar one of the
passengers in a car which had
stopped after the accident, took
the kitten to Taverham Vets. If
the kitten was microchipped the
Vet would have been able to
contact the owners. A local
resident asked for this notice to
be placed in Bowthorpe News in
case the owner still needed to
know what had happened to their
kitten.

To the lady who I met walking her dog Bella

and who joined me as we took our dogs over
the fields. As I do not know where you live to
thank you personally I decided to write to the
Bowthorpe News. I wanted to say a special
thank you for your support when my old dog
of 17 years and deaf and blind collapsed with
a seizer and her heart went into failure. After
her heart massage as you know she did start
to recover and believe it or not seems
unaffected other then always standing on one
of my feet when I stand still! I really
appreciate your thoughtfulness and kindness
and did note you even cleaned up after her,

Back to Basics with the Grow

Organisation
For three months over the last summer, the Grow
Organisation piloted its Back to Basics
programme, a unique initiative, offering a range of
life skills to improve the prospects of participants in
an informal, friendly and relaxing environment.
Although the programme was specifically aimed at
those who were unemployed anyone was free to join and take advantage of
a variety of courses to improve their life chances, learn new skills and enjoy
their time on an original and inspirational scheme that is not only tailored to
individual needs but also unavailable from other mainstream employment
service organisations.
As the name suggests, Back to Basics reminded clients of the fundamental
knowledge and skills that are essential to live a full and productive life, such
as growing their own vegetables, cooking, healthy eating and nature
conservation. In addition, the scheme addressed the individual needs of
each client and concentrated future progress on their strongest skill and
abilities.
When asked about her experience of the programme, Alyssa was clearly
enthusiastic and said that she had really enjoyed the course, particularly
how to shop and cook healthily on a budget. She also hoped that the
scheme would continue.
Another member of the group, Elisha, highly recommended the course and,
as well as enjoying the opportunity to take part in outdoor activities and
make new friends, she also initiated an invited lunch event to celebrate the
programme and has now secured a college course in horticulture.
The programme also offered participants a Progression into Work scheme,
in which clients were encouraged to recognise their past achievements,
learn new methods of gaining employment and put these into practice with
renewed confidence by writing CVs and acquiring additional interview
techniques. Of those who completed the 12 week course, half have moved
on to employment or further education, while all seem to have gained from
the help of the organisations dedicated tutors to address their personal
issues, and improve their communication and social skills within a team
environment.

A message for new students to Bowthorpe
Bowthorpe is a very desirable location for students studying at The University of East
Anglia (UEA) and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Year on year there is
an increase in student lets to the area and students generally can be a top attraction
for would-be burglars or thieves.
Crime remains relatively low in Norfolk but students still remain a top target for
criminals with about one in three falling victim to some kind of crime. It is easy to see
why students become victims: they own more expensive consumer goods per head
than the rest of the population, they have laptops, mobile phones, i-pods, televisions
and often walk around with some of this electronic gadgetry making their way to and
from the library and university campus. A crime prevention student pack to help
students new to Norfolk remain crime free during their educational stay, is available
from the Bowthorpe Safer Neighbourhood team.
By taking a few simple precautions, you can help to make sure you don't become a
victim. It only takes minimal effort but can save you maximum inconvenience, cash
and even injury. Its all about common sense.
Many burglaries happen when a door or window has been left open shut doors and
windows before you go out and keep valuables out of sight and if possible away from
these entry points.
* In a private home or flat, lock up whenever you go out, with deadbolts if you have
them. Look at installing a burglar alarm.
* In a hall of residence, be careful who you let in or who follows you into the building
- lock your bedroom door even if you are only going down the corridor. Only give
keys to those living in the accommodation.
* Invest in a fireproof safe in which you can store priceless papers and documents.
* Robbers are after an easy target - walk in groups at night, travel by taxi or stay
over with friends, your safety is worth more than the cab fare home!
* If possible, use cash-machines during the day - put your card and cash away and
be vigilant - never write down your PIN.
* Keep cards and chequebooks separately - note down your card details so you can
cancel them quickly.
* Always lock your car and put valuables out of sight - never leave the keys in the
ignition even when paying for petrol.
* After a night out, arrange to go home with friends, or in a taxi.
* To prevent spiking, don't leave drinks unattended or drink if it looks like it has been
tampered with.
* Be vigilant when using your mobile phone - if your phone is stolen, call your
network or 08701 123 123 to immobilise it.
* Protect yourself with insurance - keep lists of the make, model and serial numbers
of your electronic items to help police track them down if they are stolen.
* Mark your property with the initials of your university (e.g. UEA) and your student
ID number - this makes it harder for a burglar to sell stolen goods and can help the
police to return items to you.

Watch out for the brick! An executive was driving his brand new Jaguar XE
down the road when he heard an almighty crash against the side of his car. He
slammed his brakes on and got out. He had been hit by a brick, which lay in the
road. The side of his gleaming new car was a mess.
The man looked round and saw a young boy on the pavement. The
man rushed over to him, pinned him against the wall and shouted,
"DID YOU THROW THAT BRICK AT MY CAR? WHAT ON EARTH
DID YOU DO THAT FOR? THATS GOING TO COST YOU, BOY!
The young boy pleaded guilty. He had thrown the brick. But what
shocked the man was the reason why. I threw the brick because
no one would stop. Ive been trying for ages and it was the only
way I could stop you. It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the
curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up."
Now sobbing and shaking, the boy asked the stunned executive, "Would you
please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for
me." The man, now feeling extremely guilty, helped the disabled boy back into his
wheelchair. He watched the brothers go off down the street, and then made his way
back to the dented car. He didnt fix the dent. It became a reminder to him: "Don't
go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your
attention!"
Prayer: Loving God, you whisper in my soul and speak to my heart. Forgive me
when I don't have time to listen to you or to others. Help
me to slow down enough to listen. Amen.

ASHWELL COURT
Well we have come to the end of summer and can now look forward to
autumn colours. However the end of summer always seems to have a
sadness about it, especially this year when we lost our friend and
hairdresser, Val. For many years Val has been a regular weekly visitor to
Ashwell Court, setting up her hairdressing salon in our common room. We
looked forward to her visits and we miss her very much. Rest in peace Val
and our sympathies to her husband and family.
However the summer has had some lovely highlights, especially the great
days out we have shared with our friends at Bradecroft. Most recently we
had a lovely day out on the Wroxham to Aylsham Railway. Not for 6 footers
this steam train as the perfect carriages are tiny. It was a most interesting
and enjoyable ride.
We also had a lovely day at the seaside in absolutely perfect weather. This
was Doreens annual day out at Clacton. With blue sea and skies and lovely
beach we could have been on a tropical island. The front as usual was a
picture with the lovely flowers.. This trip, which Doreen who runs a day
centre, organises every year ends with a picnic at Needham Lakes, where
Doreen produces tea and home made cakes and a raffle. A lovely end to a
lovely day out.
Ashwell Court also organised an enjoyable day out at the
seaside so no one had to walk to get to the beach. We went to
Dunwich, once the biggest city in East Anglia but which is now
under the sea (although they do say you can hear the bells of its
many churches under water). All that is left of this thriving
metropolis is a handful of cottages, and some ruins, but it is still
fascinating and best of all it has the Flora tearooms on the beach. The coach
deposited us at the door and then we had a lovely fish and chip lunch ready and
waiting for us. On the way home we stopped at Southwold for tea on the pier. What
a perfect day! Thanks to our brilliant entertainment Team for arranging this and all
the other events throughout the year, and especially the refreshments for these
events and the weekly coffee mornings.

While on the subject of our weekly events, the luncheon club is still
performing brilliantly twice weekly. Not only on Tuesday but on Thursday
also there is a lovely, healthy two-course hot lunch prepared at 12.30 on
these two days. The cost for each day is only 5 and this is followed by tea
or coffee and time for a chat. We are joined by many people from
Bowthorpe/Costessey on Tuesday and would like to see more coming on
Thursday too. So please do think about joining us twice a week for a lovely
lunch.

Some trees have

personality. This
one stands at the

top of the lane in Clover Hill.

It was by far the most
splendid oak in Bowthorpe. It
looked unchangeable and
immovable. That is till July
2014 when huge boughs
suddenly broke off from it and
crashed down. The council
put tape and cones round it
till they could come and make
it safe. They cut off the few
remaining branches and left a
battered and bare stump. It
was still maybe twice as high
as a man but without a single
leaf. It had lost maybe half of
its bio-mass, though its roots
were still intact and safe
underground.
Trees are unlike us in that if
we lost half of our body there
wouldnt be much of us left.
But trees can regenerate. This one nursed its wounds all winter and come spring this
year tentatively put out some new leaves. All around it the world is changing: new
roads are being put in, a large dementia care village is going up just over the field
from it and soon I expect theyll be building houses by it.
When I went to take its picture today some workmen were
putting in a telecommunications junction box in a big hole just
next to it. They had severed some roots in digging the hole but
still a couple of hundred years worth of roots are fiercely
grasping the earth and siphoning up good from all around to
the growing tips. The leaves are covered with dust and eaten
by pests. The trunk is split and torn with the heart wood
revealed. But it is all just an incident in the life of this oak which
will almost certainly recover and go on to real maturity in a few
hundred years time.

Tributes to Derek Fiddament

I first met Derek and his friend Adrian at Chapel Break
Social Club in 2001 and was immediately struck by his
intelligent and humorous conversation. As time passed,
I came to know him better and found that, behind the
acid wit was a very deep and caring person who was
fiercely loyal to the people he was close to. He was also very
modest, and would cringe if anyone tried to pay him a
compliment.

Dereks Saturday evenings were spent enjoying good

conversation, good music and good beer. He was also an
avid reader and he read history books, biographies and
crime thrillers obtained on talking book from the RNIB. He
also enjoyed radio and TV dramas, comedies and quizzes
and he introduced me to the American TV drama The
Sopranos an everyday story of Mafia folk!
His sense of humour is legendary earning him the title of
the Resident Sit Down Comedian at the Gatehouse. One
joke he told against himself as he would was to ask the
question Guess who I bumped into at Specsavers today?
Answer? Everybody!
He also had a very deep social conscience and gave his
view on everything from how disabled people are treated in
society and by the Government.
I could go on all night about this extraordinary man but I
will summarise by saying I am so thankful that I knew him Derek was part of Saint
and for having him in my life. Derek, I will miss you, Always. Michaels Workshop since

Over 40 professionals from Education
came to the opening of Chapel Break
Infant school becoming a Centre for immersive learning.
The visitors spent the morning talking to
our children and adults about our approach to learning.
They wandered through many rooms
where children were immersed in their
learning, walking through castles, circuses and the countryside. Each year
group begin their learning with a BIG
question.
