STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

LANKA VENKATA RAGHAVA RAVI TEJA

Mechanical Engineering MS aspirant, fall 2015
Multi-disciplinary approach coupled with the advancements in software tools made research on complex dynamic
systems conceivable. Be it in nature, automobiles or chemical sciences, all the convolutely interrelated dynamic
systems such as human hand, diesel injection technologies, and fuel cells can now be mathematically modelled
and analyzed. This analysis whets our understanding and aids us to control them. As a budding researcher, I aspire
to model complex vehicle dynamic systems and develop control mechanisms for the same. Masters in mechanical,
specializing in vehicle dynamic systems and control is my first step in achieving it and I foresee myself as a
researcher in a multi-disciplinary research group working on vehicle dynamic systems and control.
Since my childhood, I was interested in application oriented learning and Physics, a subject which provides
scientific reasoning for natural phenomenon and real life applications, became a natural extension to my interest.
My inclination towards practical applications made me win several science exhibitions. Being a topper in Physics
at my high school, I secured a rank of 5569 (% below-99.5) in All India Engineering Entrance Examination
(AIEEE), which gave me the liberty of choosing institution and discipline. I chose Mechanical Engineering, which
majorly encompasses applied Physics, at National Institute of Technology Warangal (NITW), ranked among top
10 universities in India.
NITW, possessing distinguished professors and world-class laboratory facilities, provided me a strong technical
base. It was during my sophomore year that a course on Dynamics of Machines, because of its intriguing
applications, deeply roused my interest. I made a model of Geneva mechanism to broaden my understanding.
Further, I opted for industrial training and a project at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to have hands-on
experience and understand the dynamic systems and control mechanisms in aeronautics. The training I had
undergone raised my capabilities and interest to pursue more on complex dynamic systems.
My curiosity to explore more about dynamic systems led me to make a soccer bot and participate in "Robo
Soccer", part of international robotics competition where I was placed fifth. I also built a line-follower bot,
equipped with LED sensors which follows darker line in an arena. On building these prototypes, I realized that
introduction of electronic control enormously improves the precision of tasks. Based on these projects, I was
inducted into science and hobbies club, a platform for aspiring science enthusiasts, where I continued my
expedition towards electronic control systems. There, I worked on controlling of Atmega16 microcontroller
equipped bots through mobile phone. Later, I was invited to organize a workshop on the same, in which, I trained
participants on construction and programming of DTMF (Dual Tone Multi Frequency) bots. These mobile
controlled DTMF bots equipped with an accelerometer sensor were tested on a maze. The workshop was highly
successful and the questions posed by participants made me dig deeper and hone my understanding of electronic
control systems.
Frequent visits, guest lectures of eminent researchers and access to science journals such as ASME Journal of
dynamic systems, IEEE and ELSEVIER introduced me to the world of research in dynamic systems. Inspired by
a lecture delivered on mathematical modelling techniques by Prof. J.N. Reddy, a world renowned researcher, I
worked on developing a mathematical model of S.I. Engine. This model was executed in MATLAB/SIMULINK
to simulate and predict the burning duration of various alternate fuels. The vast scope and challenges in modelling
complex dynamic systems made me inquisitive towards it.

To study non-linear dynamic systems in the latest automotive technologies, I chose my undergraduate thesis under
the guidance of distinguished professor Dr. G. Amba Prasad Rao on project entitled Simulation Model for
Analysis of the Performance Characteristics of a Common Rail Injector . In this work, we developed a one
dimensional, transient and compressible flow model of Common Rail Injector considering various parameters
such as Common Rail pressure and cycle time of Electronic Control Unit (ECU). This model was incorporated in
MATLAB/SIMULINK platform for optimization. The pilot injection characteristics have also been observed for
the fuel ISO 4113. The variation with the bulk modulus and density has also been modelled which facilitates the
testing of Bio-Diesels. A sensitivity analysis was carried out on the inputs of the model. Currently, the manuscripts
which detail the findings of my research are being processed for publication. Even though we generated highly
encouraging results, our initial plan to verify with physical model was not feasible due to the security norms of
organizations.
Further, training offered at BOSCH Ltd. during my employment on Fuel Injection Equipment testing increased
my technical skills. There, I was introduced to piezo actuated Fuel Injectors and got hands-on experience on latest
automobile equipment such as Common Rail System. After training, I developed repair concepts considering
failure phenomenon for various BOSCH products. Also, working at BOSCH Ltd. made me an independent person
capable of leading others. Further, considering my passion towards the subject and diversified applications of it,
I wish to continue my research in the field of dynamics of complex systems and control.
My strong fundamentals in other facets of Mechanical Engineering incurred from projects such as manufacture
of All-Terrain Vehicle (SAE India-BAJA competition), synthesis of nano crystalline high entropy alloys (INAE
fellowship), customizing of Filling Liquid Closing pharmaceutical packaging machine (project at BOSCH Ltd.
Goa) and summer intern at TATA Steel Ltd. makes me capable of working in a multi-disciplinary group.

Why University of Wisconsin-Madison?

University of Wisconsin-Madison, having state of the art research facilities such as Engine research center, Power
Train Control Research lab, Direct-Injection Engine research consortium and Simulation Based Engineering lab,
would enable me to expand my research on vehicle dynamics and diesel injection technologies to the next level.
Also, University of Wisconsin-Madison having a research group working on highly efficient diesel engine would
be a perfect fit for me and the cutting edge research happening there would bring out the best in me. Given a
chance, I would be honored to work on highly efficient diesel engine at Engine research center. I am aware that
University of Wisconsin-Madison expects highly qualified researchers who can contribute uniquely and
significantly to the research group. With my consistent academic performance, research experience, industrial
