DEFINITION:
According to Hedger Ken Field trip may be defined as "an educational procedure but which the
student studies first hand objects and materials in their natural environment.
According to Basawanthappa a field trip is defined as "A planned and supervised visit of a group
of outside the normal classroom to get the first hand educational experience".
The field trip is probably the oldest visual aid, having been used centuries ago by the early Greek
teachers who told their classes to the natural situation for first hand knowledge.
TYPES OF FIELD TRIPS
Depending on the place of visit and its duration field trips are mainly of the following four types,
namely
- Local School Trips.
- Community Trips
- Educational Trips
a) Local school trips: It is a trip with in the school and its immediate by neighbours to acquaint
students about the potential of learning from the immediate environment.
A School Trip is essential for fresh students to know the geography of school, facilities
and services available in the school, and introduction with the school personnel's and staff.
Eg: Taking student to the school library to know the rules and regulations, drawing bodes
and library coquettes.
b) Community trip: It is the trip made to a nearby place of educational interest and it requires
some hours or a complete day.
Eg:- A trip to the local zoo.
A trip to the local science museum.
A trip to the local branch of a voluntary organization
A trip to the national Institute of Nutrition.
c) Educational trip: It is a trip made to a distant place requiring more than one day.

ORGANIZATION AND PROCEDURE FOR FILD TRIP:


For using the field trip as instructional aid, proper planning of a field trip requires planning and
its dutiful execution.
The following are suggested as a guide in organizing and conducting Field trips:
1.KNOWLEDGE: Analyse educational values to be obtained from each possible trip. This
requires an exploratory visit by the teacher so that she can determine whether or not the field
trips planned will contribute to the attainment of desired objectives.
2. RAPPORT: Establish and maintain cordial relations with these in charge of the situations to be
visited. This is one of the first step in the development of the trip in order to present or erase the
feeling of sightseeing in the student the personnel of the institution should be informed as to the
purposes, procedures and future utilization field trip as an educational tool.
3. OBJECTIVES: State objectives for the unit carefully and completely and then select the
learning activities which will best contribute to the attainment of objectives.
4 TIME AND TRANSPORTATION: Make the necessary arrangement for the time and the place
of meeting for the length of the visit' with the administrative personnel in the place to be
visited,planning for transportation may be done with the students, make sure that all students
have transportation, know where to meet, the exact time, of the visit and hour long it is to last.
5 PREPARATION OF THE STUDENT: All fieldtrips should be developed naturally out of the
class. A good trip assignment not only indicates the objectives and As location but also stimulates
the student to think about it in term of importance, purpose, practice, and personnel student
should be given an opportunity to list the objectives, cooperatively for which the trip is planned
(active participation), directions should be given on the procedure to be followed in the
observation and the special points to note. Prepare activity and worksheets and distribute the
students to collect and write the information, draw sketches, stick picture post cards.
6. SUPERVISION: All trips should be supervised carefully in order to protect both the students
and school safety and comfort should be considered. This is provided by instructing the student
carefully. Time, exact place of meeting, type of transportation, conduct and courtesy all should
explained carefully to each student. The trip itself should proceed in an orderly manner with all
students in an alert and observing frame of mind. During the field strip the students should be
encouraged to what they are curious. Channelize their excitement towards teaming activities.

FILOW UP AND EVALUATION :


A well planned follow up session after the field trip increases, the educational value.

The class period following field trip should be used for an open discussion. This can be done by
means of student's reports discussion and evaluation of reports and questions by students and
teacher.
Collection and display of the learning material collected during the trip.
To relate the field trip gains, with the learning units in the syllabus.
To extend the learning from the field trip in the form preparations of projects, reports, models etc.
Testing the gains from the educational trip using questions and opinions.
Field trip provides learning experience in the real life situation by direct contact with
objects process and systems and thus h. many advantages which are enumerated as follows:

It provides accurate information objects, process, and systems in their real life setting.
It provides meaningful direct experience and hence result in lasting learning.
The students learning can be easily diverted towards effective learning.
Field trips are valuable aids to what students are curious about the natural and man-made
process and objects.
Field trips can be effectively supplemented the classroom learning through application
and reviewing the experience of student.
Field trips provide an opportunity to utilize all their senses for earning. It develops the
proper attitude and social skills among student.
