Autumn Abundance
I am torn. Do I like summer more?
Or autumn more? Those are
definitely
my
two
favorite
seasons, but which one As we
head into autumn, I may as well
claim the fall as my favorite (you
know, if youre not with the one
you love, love the one youre
with!).
Janet
Goulet
of
Washington Island wrote a lovely
poem about the richness, the
abundance of autumn. Our lives
really are so full, so rich. If there
were one spiritual discipline I
would commend, it is the
discipline of thankfulness, of
seeing grace when it is laid upon
us. Where do we see this
abundance in our lives, in the
world around us? How do we
experience the simple blessings
of our lives? And if you or I were
to write a poem about the
abundance of our lives, what
would we write?

Bushels of shiny red apples,

fields of orange pumpkins,
bins of squash, zucchini and corn,
boxes of ripe, fragrant tomatoes,
blueberries, peaches and pears,
zinnias, asters and daisies.
Crimson tinted clouds at sunrise,
hundreds of Canada geese fill
Octobers bright blue sky,
brilliant leaves dance, whirl, sail
across fields, yards, roadways,
pile under dark evergreens.

On October 4 we will be taking a special offering for

Neighbors in Need. This is one of the four special offerings
of Our Churchs Wider Mission that we participate in
during the year.
As a church, this is how we can express a common
commitment to justice and compassion throughout the
United States and Puerto Rico. One-third of the offering
supports the work of the Council for American Indian
Ministry (CAIM), including much-needed financial aid for
20 American Indian congregations in the UCC. CAIM
supports the work of local churches and their pastors;
encourages youth and young adults; supports persons
preparing for Christian ministry; empowers American
Indians who are members of non-Indian congregations;
and advocates for justice on issues affecting American
Indian life.
An example of one such injustice is the use of Indian
lands to lay pipeline without Native American consent.
This stems from the Doctrine of Discovery written hundreds
of years ago to justify the pattern of domination and
oppression by European monarchies as they began
invading discovering - and colonizing the rest of the
world. The discovery concept was written into United
States law in 1823 and is still in effect. (To learn more, visit

The other two-thirds of the offering supports justice
advocacy and direct service projects such as just-peace
programs and community grants up to $3,000 twice a
year. One agency, Hand in Hand is the go-to agency in
Maine for Latino immigrants and farm worker issues. This
organization provides a wide variety of services such as
English classes, college scholarships, tutoring and
affordable
housing..

set a time for her to come over and visit. You give her a
decent cup of coffee or a cold glass of water, and tell
her all about yourselves, and ask any questions you have
of her (including What day was the universe created?
She has that one all figured out and will be glad to share
it with you.!)

Place your orders with Laurie Buckett- they

will be delivered to you the following
Sunday. SCRIP cards are available for
purchases of gas, groceries, big-box stores
and most anything you can imagine. You
pay face value for the cards and
Emmanuel retains a percentage of each purchase. Its
an easy way to give the church a financial helping hand!
Pastor Nansi uses gift cards to help out those in need with
gas and groceries ($20-$25 increments), so if you can
spare a few more dollars, dont forget her Care Fund
Ministry.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
SUNDAY SCHOOL
Our Rally Day was a success! The kids got to learn the
new style of Sunday School and started working on our
first lesson on praying...how to pray, types of prayers and
the Lord's Prayer. We will be following this lesson for the
next 4 weeks. We will be learning about prayer through
drama, art and cooking lessons. Take a look at the hand
picture that came home with your child. Ask your child to
tell you the 7 different things we pray for. In case they
forgot, they are (starting with the index finger) for God,
forgiveness, others in need, ourselves, our enemies and
thankfulness. The last one is about listening for God
around us, just like we do in the big church before we
have our prayer time.
Please bring in your child's registration for Sunday School.
There are extra forms in the blue room and in the file
folder in the Christian Ed mailbox. You can drop off your
registration form with a teacher or place in it the Christian
Ed mailbox (located in the hallway leading to fellowship
hall, between the 2 restrooms). Don't forget to bring in
some extra money if you can for our offering. We will
determine where the money will go soon...some ideas
are to HAWS, Three Pillars and Children's Hospital. We will
use the money that has been collecting in the dinosaur
by the nursery as well as what we collect through
December. Then we will have another offering January
through May.
We are very excited about this year and look forward to
learning with your children!

A message from the Sunday School Music Director...
Hello Emmanuel families, as many of you may know I
(Ryan Dockstader) have fulfilled the role of the new music
teacher for church school. I am very excited and thankful
to be teaching music to our children of Emmanuel. The
Christian Education Team and I have been working hard
over the summer to prepare for this years Sunday school
classes. As a team we have selected several hymns that I
feel our children will truly enjoy. Our hymn of the month
for September and beginning of October is Seek First. At
the end of each month our children will be performing
the hymn of the month for all to enjoy. The children will be
singing after their time with the young disciples during
worship. The Christian education team would like to thank
our wonderful secretary Donna who has created a
childrens hymnal. I feel that we have had a successful
Rally Day and I am looking forward to a fun and exciting
Sunday school year.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT IT MEANS WHEN JESUS
IS CALLED THE SON OF GOD?
This year, the Adult Bible Study will be delving into
ancient archaeology and culture in the time of Jesus.
Well be using The Challenge of Jesus by renowned
scholar Dr. John Dominic Crossan, one of the most
challenging scholars of our day. This is the summation of
his lifes work, developed into four themes: The World of
Jesus, the Life of Jesus, The Death of Jesus, and the
Resurrection of Jesus.
For example in the first session, before Jesus ever started
His ministry, the Roman Emperors were called The Savior
of the World and The Son of God. They also called
themselves The Prince of Peace, but their idea of how
peace would be achieved was by conquering the world.
Their motto was Peace through Military Victory. When
Jesus comes on the scene, these imperial titles are taken
over by Him. Why? What does it mean when the titles of
the Roman Imperial Theology are taken from Caesar and
given to Jesus instead?
The material is absolutely fascinating, and will open your
eyes to the Bible as theyve never been opened before!
Please join us: No Bible experience necessary; just a
curious mind. We meet every Tuesday from 9:30-10:45am
in the Community Room and we even serve coffee!

The next meeting is Tuesday, October 13 from 1-3 PM in

fellowship hall. Mary and Nancy Edwards will be the
hostesses. All of the ladies of Emmanuel are welcome to

Minister for the SE & NE Associations Jane Anderson!
Thursday, October 8 at noon is a welcome reception for
her at First Congregational UCC in Waukesha. Welcome
among us, Jane!

MISSION & OUTREACH

Singing Bowl

Thanks so much for your generosity over the

past few months to our mission of
DryHootch, which is helping our local
veterans through support and peer-created programs.
We raised almost $500 for them. Thank you!
For the next few months, we will be supporting Repairers
of the Breach. This organization provides a daytime
refuge for the homeless and a walk-in clinic in an area of
extreme poverty in Milwaukee. Repairers of the Breach
offers individual counseling, support groups, family
reunification, substance abuse treatment, and housing,
treating clients with dignity, respect and understanding.
Stay tuned for more mission moments in church and a
possible Adult Forum after church to learn more about
Repairers of the Breachs mission.
Their free clinic serves an average of 167+ patients per
month and is supported by a staff of volunteer physicians
and nurses who generously provide care to the patients.
Medication dispensed is purchased through a pharmacy
that serves 14 free clinics in Greater Milwaukee by
supplying medications at a greatly reduced cost. These
medications are crucial to the health and even the very
life of their patients. It is only through your generous
donations that they are able to purchase the discounted
drugs and clinic supplies needed to continue serving the
needy. At this time, their fund is dangerously low, so it is a
great and efficient way for your loose change to help.
Their motto for the fund drive is Be the change - give the
change!
Along with your loose change, we will also be collecting
items needed for the homeless at Repairers of the
Breach, especially in their free medical clinic. Look for
the list of items to be collected in the bulletin and on the
green bin located next to the center kiosk in the
gathering area. Well be collecting the items through
November 1 and your loose change through December.
Thanks to everyone who donated books for Prader-Willi
residents at the Oconomowoc homes. We collected six
boxes for their meager library. Thank you!
$349.16 has been collected for Dry Hootch so far. Thank
you!

MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL
Updates on the families:

Lynda and Anthony found an apartment and moved

in Thursday, September 10th. We are so happy for
them. Lynda worked very hard to accomplish the
goals she set when she joined Family Promise. She did
it in less than 1 month.

Helen (40) continues to work on her goals while in

Family Promise. Xavier (6) and Aiden (8) enjoy the
meals and the many volunteers they meet at each
church.

A new family joined Family Promise September 10.

We welcome Crystal (36) and her two daughters,
ages 12 and 10.

The fund raiser:

The first Annual Golf Outing was held at Lake Mills Golf
Course on Saturday, September 12.
What a great
turnout- it was on a beautiful fall day. The amount raised
is not known at the time of this publication but from the
many raffle tickets sold and miscellaneous fun things to
buy on the course, the Family Promise income line for the
month of September should bring smiles to all who
worked so hard to make this outing a great success!

The next Family Promise Training Session will be Saturday,
Oct. 10 from 1-3pm at St. Jerome Catholic Church in
Oconomowoc.

opportunities to volunteer on the sign-ups in the gathering
area. Remember to volunteer with guests present, you
must first attend a training session.

A Musical Opportunity

Three questions for you:

1. Do you miss the old familiar
hymns such as Blest Be the
Tie, What a Friend We
Have in Jesus or Fairest Lord Jesus to name a few?
2. Do you have a stringed or woodwind instrument that
you would like to play with a group?
3. Are you willing to play before or during the church
service several times a year?
If you answered Yes to these questions then I would like
to hear from you! I am hoping we can organize an
ensemble and play some hymns as the congregation
gathers on a few Sunday mornings during the year.
Practice would be held after church two weeks prior to
playing.

Everyone you meet is afraid of something,

loves something and has lost something.

Keep those bags of cans coming! Place

your aluminum cans and other precious
metals (brass, copper etc.) in bags outside
the garage. THANK YOU!

Jesus and Satan were having an ongoing argument about who

was better on his computer. They had been going at it for 40
days and 40 nights, and God was tired of hearing all of the
bickering. Finally, God said, "Cool it. I am going to set up a test
that will run two hours and I will judge who does the better job"
So Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed away.
They moused. They did spreadsheets. They wrote reports. They
sent faxes. They sent e-mail. They sent out e-mail with
attachments. They downloaded. They did some genealogy
reports. They made cards. They did every known job. But ten
minutes before their time was up, lightning suddenly flashed
across the sky, thunder rolled, the rain poured, and of course, the
electricity went off.
Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word
known in the underworld. Jesus just sighed. The electricity finally
flickered back on, and each of them restarted their computers.
Satan started searching frantically screaming
"It's gone! It's all gone! I lost everything when the power went
out!"
Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all of his files from
the past two hours. Satan observed this and became irate.
"Wait! He cheated! How did he do it?"
God shrugged and said... "Jesus saves."
