INSULATION Application of
Cold Insulation
General
Specifications
1.0
1.1
Straight Pipe
To the bare clean surface of the pipe, molded sectional pipe insulation shall be applied in
broken joint construction. All joints shall be buttered with joint sealer to provide an
adequate vapour seal. The pipe covering shall be secured with banks spaced on
approximately 150 mm (6.0) centers. In the event double layer construction is used, the
second layer shall be applied in the same manner as the first layer with all joint lapping
one-half (1/2) of each section between layers. Directly over the pipe covering, a sheet
metal jacket of .40 mm (1 9/16) aluminum shall be applied, with a minimum lap of 50 mm
(2.0) circumferentially and longitudinally. The jacket shall be secured with sheet metal
screws on 150 mm (6.0) centers.
1.2
Fittings
Factory fabricated and/or field fabricated fittings shall be used. All joints shall be buttered
and sealed. The fittings shall be secured with wire loops with not less than four (4) loops
per fitting, using 12 ga. wire. The entire fitting shall then be coated with 2 mm (1/16) of
joint sealer. Glass fabric shall then be applied and lapped at least 50 mm (2.0) on all
joints. Over the glass fabric, a 2 mm coat (1/16) of weatherproofing shall be applied and
finished to a smooth surface. The weatherproofing and glass fabric shall extend under
aluminum jacketing at least 75 mm (3.0). Metal covers are acceptable.

Equipment
1.3.1
Shells
To the bare clean surface of the vessel, paint a coat of asphalt base primer; then apply
block insulation which is mitered to fit curvature of vessel. All joints shall be buttered with
joint sealer to provide an adequate vapour seal. The lags shall be secured with 19 mm
(3/4) stainless steel banks, machine stretched and fastened on approximately 230 mm
(9.0) centers. A metal jacket shall be applied as shown under paragraph 3.5 of Section A.
1.3.2
Heads
Heads are irregular surfaces, where it is not practical to finish with a metal jacket, shall be
finished in the same manner as for fittings in paragraph 1.2 of this specification.
1.4
1.5
Vessels and piping shall be coated with asphalt base primer before the application of the
insulation. The entire surface of Foamglass shall be coated with 2 mm (1/16) of sealer.
1.5.1
Insulate all nozzles, manholes covers and flanges, bottom heads with same thickness of
insulation as adjacent shell. Insulation at manhole covers, flanges, etc. shall be removable
without damage to main insulation.

1.5.2
Vessel supports shall be insulated along the support to five (5) times the shell insulation
thickness.
1.5.3
All gauge glasses, columns, level controllers, thermowells, etc. shall be insulated.
1.6
Process Piping
Valves and flanges shall be insulated and such insulation shall be removable without
damage to adjacent insulation.
