The publication includes selected case studies
from four different countries in Latin America.
These address key issues regarding crop cover

A study of the practice of intercropping, Innis's
meticulous analysis of the scientific base of
different traditional forms of agriculture, is at
the forefront of the search for integrated systems
of indigenous and modern agriculture. He
proposes the return of the small farmer to the
land and suggests how this might be done.

Sustainable Cities
As urbanization, environmental
degradation, and poverty become
increasingly urgent problems,
understanding the links between
sustainability and poverty reduction is
imperative. A sustainable urban future
for all requires raising the quality of life
of the most vulnerable. Existing at the
margins of urban life, low-income
residents of cities in the global south
are subject to numerous environmental
burdens and are too often excluded from
mainstream development and planning.
In the face of these challenges,
communities have proven to be
remarkably resilient and innovative.
This book attempts to show how this
potential can be harnessed, by
showcasing sustainable solutions
developed by the urban poor themselves
and present the findings of participatory
action research projects funded by
IDRCs ECOPOLIS. The studies, conducted
in the growing urban and peri-urban
areas of Peru, Senegal, Bangladesh,
Ethiopia, the Philippines,Thailand, and
the Democratic Republic of Congo,
outline concrete strategies for
sustainable urban living and design,
developed in partnership with low
income city dwellers.Published in
association with IDRC.

This manual is written to help engineers, aid and
agency workers understand drainage problems, so
that they can work towards finding practical
solutions. It focuses on: what is drainage
performance? how can we evaluate a drainage
system, to access how best to improve its
performance? what are the effects of solids in
drains upon performance?

Studies of vulnerability
James Lewis
This book addresses the long-overdue imbalance
in disaster management: an over-emphasis on
post-disaster assistance and a lack of attention to
vulnerability reduction. It answers the
fundamental question in this debate: how can we
mould pre-disaster development initiatives to
become the most appropriate means for
vulnerability reduction.

Transforming Development
Women, poverty and politics
Margaret Snyder
This books shows that women can be
instrumental in expanding and democratizing
national economies: creating wealth and family
well-being. Through a history of UNIFEM, the
author shows how the large-scale investments of
governments, the World Bank, the United
Nations and other organizations can become
both more effectively and gender-sensitive.

Yarn Preparation
A handbook
John A Iredale
This is a valuable book which fills the need for a
practical manual specifically about yarn
preparation. Much has been published about the
main textile areas of yarn manufacture and fabric
production, because yarn preparation tends to be
a series of link operations, there have been very
few books specifically directed to this area of
processing.

Negotiating Water Rights
Edited by Bryan Randolph Bruns and
Ruth Meinzen-Dick
This book presents a thorough exploration of
water rights in the context of growing water
scarcity and competition. It uses case studies
from across the globe to identify: the range of
water rights and basis for claims on the resource;
local experiences in negotiating water rights, and
opportunities to empower farmers in water

Small-scale Irrigation
Peter Stern
This excellent, clearly illustrated book has been
written for those working with farmers on
development and extension in rural areas who do
not have much access to the technical
know-how needed for developing irrigated
agriculture on a small scale.
Chris Lovell
This book shows how research in Southern
Africa has shed light on why conventional wells
and boreholes fail, on the potential of the
groundwater resource to support production
through improved siting and selection of more
appropriate well designs, and on the positive
impacts and some problems that can emerge at
productive water points.

Truly integrated pest management (IPM) is not
possible without women; nevertheless, few
publications are available. This wide-ranging
book introduces many of the issues, such as
reasons for women's involvement (or lack of it)
in projects as well as examples of
gender-sensitive extension programmes, and
health aspects involved.

People's Participation draws on papers discussed
at the 1997 World Congress of Participative
Convergence in Knowledge, Space and Time. It
looks at the social, political, economic and
cultural movements at the heart of Participative
Research - where knowledge, space and time are
seen as the principal tools for change for the
advancement of peoples.

This book describes the approaches and
experiences of rural development workers in
Senegal working with small-scale farmers. Its aim
is to highlight successful methodological
approaches adopted by this group in their
attempt to help farmers revitalize the local
environment in community lands, while building
on the farmers' own experiences.

The book provides a timely contribution to the
discussion on land reform; scrutinizing the

Poverty and Rural Development
K. Puttaswamaiah
This collection of essays presents evidence from a
variety of countries and backgrounds - India, Sri
Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Fiji, Brazil,
Nigeria and Kenya are among the countries
studied. It poses the question of whether peasant
poverty is mainly a result of decisions made in
the interests of cities and urban groups.

Sustainable Cities
As urbanization, environmental
degradation, and poverty become
increasingly urgent problems,
understanding the links between
sustainability and poverty reduction is
imperative. A sustainable urban future
for all requires raising the quality of life
of the most vulnerable. Existing at the
margins of urban life, low-income
residents of cities in the global south
are subject to numerous environmental
burdens and are too often excluded from
mainstream development and planning.
In the face of these challenges,
communities have proven to be
remarkably resilient and innovative.
This book attempts to show how this
potential can be harnessed, by
showcasing sustainable solutions
developed by the urban poor themselves
and present the findings of participatory
action research projects funded by
IDRCs ECOPOLIS. The studies, conducted
in the growing urban and peri-urban
areas of Peru, Senegal, Bangladesh,
Ethiopia, the Philippines,Thailand, and
the Democratic Republic of Congo,
outline concrete strategies for
sustainable urban living and design,
developed in partnership with low
income city dwellers.Published in
association with IDRC.

There are important lessons to be learned from
this Brazilian experience, from forest
management to industrial production and use of
charcoal. Brazil's experience is of interest to
many other charcoal-producing countries,
particularly as an example of natural resource
and management use, with its many
socio-economic and environmental ramifications.

Waterlines
Waterlines - over 30 years
Published continually since 1982, Waterlines is the leading forum for all those involved in
extending water supply, sanitation, hygiene and waste management to those in developing
countries.
Year after year there are increases to the challenges faced by those working in the water and
sanitation sector. It is therefore vital to provide affordable, sustainable systems to tackle
those issues. Waterlines provides a vital forum for engineers, health professionals, community
development workers, researchers and policy makers to assess these issues and implications,
particularly with reference to wider policy and institutional frameworks.
By bridging the gap between research and practice, Waterlines aims to highlight the different
information sources and encourage debate between the various perspectives.

Food Chain
A journal that goes from farm gate to plate
Food Chain is an international journal for all those involved in developing the supply of high-quality
foods from farm gate to plate and those who use food processing to alleviate poverty and hunger.
By bridging the gap between research and practice, we encourage papers written by researchers for
the benefit of people who put ideas into practice in the field, and those written by practitioners to
inform the need for further research. The content covers all aspects of promoting food chains, from
on-farm processing and post-harvest storage, to the operation of small food-processing businesses,
supply of food-processing or analytical equipment, hygiene and quality assurance, value chain
development, marketing, distribution, finance and the place of small-scale processing in the wider
business and economic environment.
As well as peer-reviewed in-depth articles, Food Chain includes the following features: a Crossfire
debate on a topical issue, book reviews, field reports, technical reports, and book reviews.
