The Flower-Myths
This picture is a representaion of the three
flowers in The Flower-Myths, named Hyacinth, Narcissus,
and Adonis. It is said that in Greece, the flowers are mostly
lovely and beautiful. The flower Narcissus, which is
furthest to the left, represents rebirth and new beginnings.
The flower Hyacinth, which is furthest to the right,
represents sport or play in the language of flowers and the
death of a young Greek boy named Hyakinthos. There were
two gods who competed for his attention named Apollo and
Zephyr. The last flower Adonis, which is in the middle,
represents the beauty of a young boy once named Adonis.
Each of these flowers represent the sad deaths of innocent
young men. The artist of this painting must have been
inspired by the stories of their deaths while adding her
interpretation of their beauty.
