Attack Phase
The Attack Phase is optional. You do not need to attack.
1. Assignment Segment: The Attacker assigns unbowed
Personalities to attack Provinces. The Defender then assigns
unbowed Personalities, if any, to defend Provinces.
2. Combat Segment: Starting with the Defender, players
take Engage actions in turn. Once both players pass
consecutively, then they, Defender first, take Battle actions.
You must have at least one unit at the battle to take an action.
Actions from cards in units must be at the current battlefield,
as must all targets of an action. The segment ends, as always,
when all players pass consecutively on Battle actions.
3. Resolution Segment: Count the Force of all unbowed
Personalities and unbowed Followers on each side. The
higher total wins. If it is a tie, both players lose. Destroy
all cards in the losing army. Players gain 2 Honor for
each enemy card destroyed this way. If the Attacker wins,
and has more Force than the Defenders army plus the
Defenders Province Strength, destroy the Province as well.
After the battle, any attacking or defending units left at
the battle go home. Bow them if they are attacking.

Starting Setup
1. Show Strongholds and Sensei (if any), the player with the
highest Family Honor goes first and uses the black bordered side
of their Stronghold. The other players use the white side.
2. Shuffle Dynasty (Black back) and Fate (Green) decks separately.
3. Place your Dynasty deck about where your left hand goes.
Place the top four cards from the Dynasty deck, one by one, to
the right of the deck, forming your Provinces. Place your Fate
deck to the right of these Provinces.
4. Each player draws five Fate cards.
Turn Sequence
1. Action Phase
Straighten all your cards. Turn cards in your Provinces face-up.
You have the first action. You may take Limited and Open
actions; the other player may take Open actions. As with each
type of action (Limited/Open, Engage, Battle), players may pass,
and the opportunity to play that type of action ends when both
players pass consecutively.
2. Attack Phase (other side)
3. Dynasty Phase
Recruit Holdings (bowed) and Personalities (unbowed). Discard
any unwanted Dynasty cards. Finally, draw a Fate card. If you
have more than eight Fate cards in hand, discard down to eight.
