Questions 26-30
Read the passage below and answer the questions below
With more than 30 different ethnic groups co-existing harmoniously in Sarawak, it
is quite a challenge to tell them apart. These groups include up to 21 native ethnic tribes, as
well as Malay and Chinese settlers. Bewildering as this cultural diversity may be, however,
it is possible to identify the various groups as they have carefully preserved their individual
cultural identity, observing traditional customs and rituals on a day-to-day basis.
One factor unites them all, and is in fact characteristic of all the groups, no matter
where you go in Sarawak- their friendliness, warmth and hospitality. From the Ibans (Sea
Dayaks), Bidayuhs, and costal Melanaus to the community-centric. Orang Ulu comprising
the Kayan, Kenyah, Kelabit, Berawan, Lun Bawang and nomadic Penan tribal group, you
will quickly discover that the people are wonderfully open and over-obliging. English is
widely spoken and understood here, so finding your way around is easy enough and making
new friends is inevitable.
A trip to Sarawak would be incomplete without a long house visit, and Kuching
provide an excellent base for these tours, raging from half-day to week-long expeditions.
The further upriver the longhouse, the more traditional the experience. This is one of the
most memorable experiences Sarawak has to offer, and you will get the firsthand glimpse of
the people unique way of life as they welcome you into their hearts and home. Essentially,
there are four main riverine areas for visiting Ibans longhouse-the Skarang, Lemanak,
Batang Ai and the middle Rejang rivers. Alternatively, you can also opt to trek through the
Bario highlands and stay overnight in more remote Kelabit longhouses. If you are on short
visit, day trips can also be arranged to Bidayuh longhouses around Kuching, but overnight
stays are highly recommendedto get the most put of the experience. Living closely with the
people, you not only get to see the native culture up close, but also experience visiting the
rice fields and pepper gardens, and learn how the Iban regard the reinforest as the source for
all their everyday needs.
A popular Iban longhoses is in the Serubah longhose, located on the Lemanak River.
To access the longhouse, you will need to motorized longboat upriver against the many
rapids along the way. The journey itself is an interesting and enjoyable experience,
interspersed with paddling and poling in the clear water of the Lemanak. Upon arrival, you
will be given a warm welcome by the longhouse dweller a the ruai, or the long, covered
gallery that runs the length of the house. Most of the Ibans are hardworking farmers, under
the charge of the headman or tuai rumah. They are very sociable people and can speak
English, so you can look forward to having a fascinating chat with them as they show you
around the longhouse.
Take your time to the tour the place and watch the native craftsman at work weaving
mats, baskets making handicraft an mending fish nets. Or simply joint them as they go about
their daily chores such as feeding livestock, washing clothes, swimming or just relaxing by
the riverbank. You will also be treated to dancing, drums and cultural performances, where
the obliging residence proudly don their resplendent their costumes to entertain guests. The
mairing ceremony involve guest being invited to sample a glass of tuak, a potent local rice
wine. As a sign of respect, you should never refuse their offer of food or drink outright.
Simply touch the glass of dishes with the fingers if you are not keen to try it. Do not be
surprised also if your hosts pull you up to joint in their ngajat, dance performance! Just go
with the flow of the moment, as your actual ability is quite irrelevant in the fun of it all.
It is important to not that while visits are very welcome at the long house. It is good
manners to notify your hosts before hand. As such, it is best to go with an organized tour
group, so you
will have a more interesting and enjoyable trip. Some tour operators will even
