T of M - Challenge Pack 2016 Letter and All 4 Challenges
T of M - Challenge Pack 2016 Letter and All 4 Challenges
T of M - Challenge Pack 2016 Letter and All 4 Challenges
There are some important dates you need to take notice of.
*Nominating your team and the chosen challenge is very important. I cant start putting
the timetable together until I know how many teams have chosen each of the
challenges. This is done through the portal your facilitator will need to open this for you
using their password and help you find the nomination page. As well as telling me which
challenge you are selecting, you need to tell me who each team member is (first name
and surname) and which year level they are in. At this stage you can still nominate
additional teams. There is also provision to let me know of any special circumstances for
your team (eg: wheel chair access will be required, we will have to travel 3 hours to get to
Flinders) which I need to know for timetabling.
Copyright 2016 Tournament of Minds Inc
Remember that only the 7 people in your team are able to discuss the challenge idea and
have input. This is very important.
There are also some special forms you need to make sure you complete and bring with
you on the day, regardless of which challenge you choose. Please give these to the
judges in your venue as you move to the performance area when you are called to set
up. They include:
Presentation skills form - see page 14 of instruction manual
Outside Assistance form see page 16
Cost Form see page 17
One copy of the script
Check your chosen challenge carefully, sometimes you need to include something
specific to your challenge.
The presentation summary form is required for the three hour challenges. You will not
need it for your 6 week challenge.
Sometimes it can be a bit tricky to know if something is counted as outside assistance. The
instruction manual will help define this for you. However if in doubt, write it on the list.
Please be aware that there is no challenge clarification. The challenge writing teams
have worked exceptionally hard to make sure all the important information is included.
We want you to read the challenges carefully, refer to the instruction manual if unsure and
show us how you have interpreted and solved the challenge.
As you will already know, TOM is about you (as a team of 7) achieving your best.
Naturally there will be times when working together is challenging, but everyone faces this
and the best teams find a solution. Your facilitator can encourage you and support you,
but it is up to you to make it happen. No matter what, you should continue. Ive had
teams where people have got sick, got stranded on the roadside travelling in or even
flown overseas 2 days before the tournament. All of these have been unforeseen and my
strongest students have supported the others. You can perform with just 5 of your original
7 and still have your team in the running for first place (some teams enter with only 5 or 6
team members, it really depends on the school you are coming from).
We are planning to use the venues at the top of the hill at Flinders again this year,
although we plan to hold our awards ceremony in the newly renovated Plaza. Every
venue will be able to accommodate a performance area which measures 3x3 metres.
There will be an area reserved for teams in each venue. There will also be areas around
our judges where we ask teams and audience not to sit. This is to enable the judges to
hear every team effectively.
Read the challenges, look at the instruction manual and bring us you best ideas.
See you in September,
The SA TOM committee.

INTRODUCTION
The Lord High Council has decreed that all parcels, packages and letters transported around the
empire must be Golden Rectangles*. The Innovation Company has been charged with designing a
simple testing device that will enable the size of items to be quickly checked and accepted or
rejected, before the beam transponder sends acceptable items to a new location in the galaxy and
any non-conforming items are destroyed.
* A Golden Rectangle has side lengths which are in the Golden Ratio. Teams will need to research
information on the Golden Ratio e.g. at https://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/golden-ratio.html
B.
CHALLENGE
To design and build the simple testing device, known as the Gold Standard Tester, which can quickly
and accurately test, with as little operator assistance as possible, whether items conform (within 1%)
to the Golden Ratio. The Tester will need to be able to accommodate items between paper sizes A7
to A4, from as thin as photocopy paper to 3 mm in thickness, and of any opaque colour.
C.
PRESENTATION
During the presentation your team must:
Demonstrate the Tester and explain how it aids rapid testing with little assistance.
Use the Tester to quickly test three items (supplied by the judges in an envelope for each team).
Timing will start from when the envelope is opened and finish when the last item has been
tested. One or more of the items may be non-conforming.
Explain the reasons why the Golden Ratio was chosen (incorporating an appreciation of why it is
considered special).
Explain, including three reasons, why the Lord High Council made the decree.
Before you commence your presentation you must present the following written information to the
judges:
One copy of your script
Your completed copies of the Cost Form, Outside Assistance Form and Presentation Skills Form.
A sketch of the device showing its means of quickly testing different items with little assistance.

Guest Who?
A.
INTRODUCTION
A major aspect of our culture is based on gathering together and sharing food, e.g. celebrations,
picnics, and dinner parties. Whilst the food is important, the conversation is what makes the
gathering memorable. Many stories of life and times are shared during these gatherings and often
topical issues are discussed and or debated. Sometimes the conversations are humorous and
contain a lot of small talk and other times they are heavy conversations where people debate their
philosophies. Most gatherings are a mixture of both depending upon the invitees and how well they
know each other.
B.
CHALLENGE
Create a scenario where a gathering takes place between a group of very different people. How did
they come to be there? What food did they bring? How does the conversation transpire and what
does it reveal about the characters involved?
C.
PRESENTATION
During the presentation your team must:
Include at least four characters from Section D, selecting only one from each genre
Show the food each character brought to the gathering and what it tells us about them
Reveal both the positive and negative aspects of the selected characters personalities
Present a topic or topics of discussion that push each character out of their comfort zone and
also bring out the best of their personalities
Before you commence your presentation you must present the following written information to the
judges:
One copy of your script
Your completed copies of the Cost Form, Outside Assistance Form and Presentation Skills Form.
A synopsis of the four characters selected outlining the genre they are from, their role in the
form of literature and their personal characteristics. See Appendix 1.

This Challenge must be read in conjunction with the 2016 Instruction Manual.
Peas in a Pod
A.
INTRODUCTION
People preserve things for many reasons and in many ways. These can include objects, ideas and
discoveries which give us a glimpse into the past and show what societies valued and experienced.
Archaeologists are exploring a previously disregarded area of Pompeii. Anomalies have been found
which are not associated with the original volcanic eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD or with the
Roman Empire. One of these anomalies is a pod from an undetermined time...
B.
CHALLENGE
Your team of archaeologists opens the pod and discovers that amongst other things it contains two
items that look the same but are fundamentally different. As a result your team has now been tasked
with finding out when the pod was buried, who buried it and for what reason. You must also identify
the two items in the pod which look the same, clarify their differences, and explain their significance
to the people who buried the pod.
C.
PRESENTATION
During the presentation your team must:
Outline the discovery of the pod in the context of the archaeological dig.
Clarify how the two items look the same and how they are different.
Portray the process of working out what these items are.
Determine who buried them and the era from which they came.
Explain the significance of the items to the group who buried them.
Before you commence your presentation you must present the following written information to the
judges:

Science Technology
This Challenge must be read in conjunction with the 2016 Instruction Manual.
INTRODUCTION
The world has gone through an unpredictable major catastrophe. Your team has survived! There are
a couple of downsides to this though. You are all trapped in your school and have lost your hearing.
From your vantage point in the school grounds you receive a signal from afar. The team realises that
this is a message and needs to respond in a similar manner to let others know that there are
survivors.
B.
CHALLENGE
Using non-verbal communication skills your team must work out what the signal means through the
recreation of making a machine that may have sent out the message.
This machine must use sound scientific and technological principles with only materials easily located
in any school around the world.
C.
PRESENTATION
During the presentation your team must:
Dramatically describe what the catastrophe was and what the message meant.
The team must explain how they received the message and how it was decoded. This decoding
must then be handed to the judges.
Demonstrate the use of the created machine to send and receive a message to the audience
that the judges can decode. This message must be no longer than five words.
During the presentation the team must provide a thorough scientific explanation of the
machine's technical specifications. This can be through any multimodal method.
Before you commence your presentation you must present the following written information to the
judges:
