B-SIDE TEAM

GETTING AROUND PORTLAND

A huge thank you to all

of our artists, friends,
volunteers and directors
who have supported or
participated in the 2016
festival. We could not have
done it without your help.

Due to its geography Portland naturally divides into two areas Underhill and Tophill. At only four miles long and
one and a half miles wide nowhere is too far to walk, but the steep hill between the Underhill area and Tophill
can be quite a challenge. The Number 1 bus offers an alternative to climbing the hill. Catch it from Fortuneswell
opposite our b-side HQ outpost and get off at The Heights Hotel or Easton.

Zone 1: Castletown & Chiswell

Castletown started out as a small fishing village, before becoming a busy area serving the numerous
sailors from the Royal Naval Dockyard. An area steeped in military history, it was also the site from where
much of the world famous Portland stone was shipped to London. Chiswell is a small former fishing village
at the southern end of Chesil Beach, situated alongside the pebble bank of Chesil Cove. The promenade
and sea wall which forms Chiswell's coastal defences are a prominent feature.

Lots to explore here at the Bill. In addition to the main lighthouse are two older lighthouses, one the former
home of Marie Stopes and now a private residence, and the other now the Portland Bird Observatory. Run
entirely by volunteers, the Coastwatch Lookout monitors activity on the water. The surrounding fields between
the Bill and Southwell still show evidence of an ancient strip field system dating from Saxon times and once
found all over the island. Amongst these fields and located along the Portland Bill Road are the remains of a
Mesolithic settlement and an ancient well at Culverwell.

Emma Critchley Artist Talk

Tues 13 | 11am | Meet outside The

Boat That Rocks restaurant | FREE
A talk describing Emmas
underwater film-making and
working in collaboration above
and below water. Focusing on the
relationship between the body and

that becomes heightened when
immersed within the thick liquidity
of water.

Convicts and Convictions:

a gamified conversation

A lively discussion about Convicts
and Conscientious Objectors.
Debbie has worked with inmates
at Dartmoor Prison to explore their

questions around what it means to
British society to have the largest
prison population in Europe.

Sadie Hennessy Artist Talk

Tues 13 | 6pm | Royal Manor

Theatre | FREE
Artist and 'shenanigator' Sadie
talks about her work for b-side and
other projects. She creates 2D and
3D collages, installations and live
events and has exhibited in the UK
and beyond. She likes to scratch
at the veneer of civilised society to
find the darkness underneath, but
always uses humour to do so, even
if it does come from the blacker end
of the comic spectrum.

Portland Castle is managed by English Heritage, open daily from 10am-6pm.

Bridgette Ashton Artist Talk

Thurs 15 | 2pm | Hayloft Cafe | FREE

Bridgette Ashtons recent work looks at redundant
or overlooked sites, objects and archives. She makes
scale-models, depictions and proposals for often
unrealistic and exaggerated Visitor Experiences.
Bridgette has been looking at how 18th-century artists
and landscape theorists were interested in the effects
of 'Claude Glasses' which were widely used by both
tourists and amateur artists who viewed scenery via
the mirror to give them a real life view of the required
'mellow tinge'.
