Q Why have a Health & Safety Policy?

A. The College has a policy in order to maintain a safe and healthy workplace and
working environment and to provide a framework to ensure there are adequate
controls in place to manage the risks that arise in everyday College life. This needs
to cover everything from slip hazards on corridors to going out on external activities,
and from testing equipment to ensuring appropriate training is given to all staff and
students in respect of health and safety.
Q Who is responsible for Health & Safety?

A. The College Board of Governors have ultimate responsibility for Health
& Safety in the College and monitor the Colleges performance through the
management structure and through the Colleges Health & Safety Committee.
Whilst the Board have ultimate responsibility everyone is personally responsible for
their own health and safety and for the health and safety of others through
their actions.
Q What do I have to do about health and safety?

A.
A
lways comply with any health and safety guidance or procedure that you have
been made aware of;
Observe safe standards of behaviour;
Report any hazards, defects, or dangers you see or hear about;
If you are a member of staff you should ensure all your activities are risk assessed.
In addition to the above there are specific responsibilities and duties in respect of
College Managers and Health & Safety Advisers and further details are contained
within the full policy document which is available on Collegenet.
Q What exactly is a risk assessment?

A. It is simply a careful examination of what, in respect of the activities being
undertaken, could cause harm to people. A risk assessment enables you to weigh
up whether you have taken enough precautions or need to do more to prevent harm.
There are five essential steps to risk assessment:
1. Identify the hazard
2. Decide who may be harmed and how
3. Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions
4. Record your findings and implement them
5. Review your assessment and update if necessary
Staff training courses in risk assessment are run throughout the year, details can be
found by contacting the Health & Safety department.
Q How do I get to know about Health & Safety

in the College?
A. All staff and students receive basic health and safety advice and an information
booklet as part of their induction.
Students will also be issued with a suitable workbook containing an introductory guide
to Health & Safety or appropriate curriculum based guidance. The workbook contains
exercises which upon satisfactory completion will merit a certificate which may be used
as evidence of personal development.
Q What should I do if I have a disability

A. You should declare any disability at the time of employment or enrolment. This will
enable specialist College staff to make any necessary, reasonable adjustment to help
manage your health and safety whilst at the College.
Q What do I do in the case of a fire?

A.
On discovering a Fire:
Sound the nearest fire alarm
On hearing the alarm/being told to evacuate the building:
a) Evacuate the building by the nearest safe route.
b) Follow the signs out of the building.
c) Report to the designated assembly point.
d) Inform your Head of School/Unit of your presence.
e) Do not use lifts unless specifically directed to appropriately signed evacuation lifts.
f) Do not run or stop to collect personal possessions.
g) Do not re-enter the building until instructed to do so by the appointed person
or senior Fire Officer present.
Persons with Impaired Mobility:
Persons with impaired mobility should follow their Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan.
Q What should I do if I am involved in or see

an accident or incident?
A. In the event of an accident taking place at any of the Colleges campuses or on

College business elsewhere, the following procedure should be followed:
1. If someone is injured contact a first aider, this can be done by calling reception
on 4004 at Bispham, 4420 at the University Centre, 4708 at Fleetwood or 4632
at Ansdell.
2. For a more serious injury call for an ambulance.
3. Persons under the age of 18 years who are sent or taken to hospital must be
accompanied by a member of the College staff.
4. The following incidents should be reported using the Accident/Incident Report form:
All accidents
Dangerous occurrences
Threats of, or actual, physical violence
Q What is the Colleges policy on Smoking?

A.
Blackpool & The Fylde College complies with the legal requirement to ban smoking in
buildings and in addition also restricts smoking around doorways and entrances.
To make sure that non-smokers can breathe in smoke-free air, special areas have
been set up for those who want to smoke smokers are directed to the smoking
shelters provided.
