GENERAL DESCRIPTION

3.1.

Description of the System

The configuration defined for the electrical system of UPS System of the plant, is represented
in the SID-10-BR_-EDU-IDM-001 UPS System. One-line diagram", which consists of:

Inverter 12 0 kVA (40 C), input 1 10 Vdc (+10%, -15%), output 230 Vac (1%)
(10BRU10).

Inverter 12 0 kVA (40 C), input 1 10 Vdc (+10%, -15%), output 230 Vac (1%)
(10BRU20).

Static transfer switches of 10BRU10.

Uninterruptible LV Distribution Board 10BRA10.

Uninterruptible LV Distribution Board 10BRA20.

In normal operation, the UPS System is always in operat ion, in order to feed the critical loads
of the power plant that require uninterruptible alternating current.
In normal o peration co nditions, all equipment (Inverters, Static Transfer Switches, Bypass
Transformer and Uninterruptible LV Distribution Board) are always in service. The Bypass
Transformers are in no load because the Uninte rruptible LV Distribution Board is fed from the
Inverters.
In normal operation, th e Uninterruptible LV Distribution B oard 10BRA10/10BRA2 0 operates
with the two incoming circuit breake rs closed a nd the coup ling circu it b reaker opened. The
Uninterruptible LV Distribution Bo ards 10BRA10/10BRA20 feed in

alternating current all

critical loads of auxiliary services to 230 Vac.

Each inverter is de signed for 100% of the tota l load, so that in case of failure of one of them,
the other equipment can continue to feed the critical loads in the Power Plant.

UPS SYSTEM. OPERATION MANUAL

In normal operation the inverters 10BRU10 y 10BRU20 will be fed from each one o f the halfbusbars of the DC Distribution Boards 10BUA10/10BUA20 at 110 Vdc.
The Uninter ruptible LV Distributio n Boards 1 0BRA10/10BRA20 consists of two

(2) half-

busbars e lectrically cou pled and ph ysically sep arated. Each inverter is connected to one of
the half-busbars of the DC Distribution Boards 10BUA10/10BUA20.
In normal operation, th e feeding to the critical loads of AC system 2 30 Vac will be made
through the two (2) inverters fed from the DC Distribution Boards at 110 Vdc.
The two (2) Uninterruptible LV Distr ibution Boards 10BRA10 and 10BR A20 are decoupled in
normal operation.
In case of voltage failur e in the LV Main Distribution Board 10BMA10/1 0BMA20, the inverters
are fed from the batteries without interruption.
Another operation mode is that the critical loads are fed fro m the LV Main Distribution Board
10BMA10/10BMA20 through the L V/LV Bypas s Transformers 10BRT10 and 10BRT20. Th is
operation mode is automatically used in situations in which a failure occurs in the inverters or
DC system.
The LV/LV Bypass Transformers will be connected to the Static Transfer Switch.
In case of failure of one of the inverters, the load from thi s inverter wi ll be transmitted to his
LV/LV Bypass Transformer.
In this case and in case of failure of the invert er and the LV/LV Bypa ss transfor mer of the
same side, the coupling circuit breakers could be closed and the full load will be fed from the
inverter of the other side.
In case

of failure

of two inverters, the Uninterruptible LV Distributio

n Board

10BRA10/10BRA20 will be fed from the LV/L V Bypass Transformers 10BRT10 and 10BRT20
that will be connected

to one of the half-busbars of the LV

Main Distributi on Board

10BMA10/10BMA20.
In case of f ailure of tw o inverters and one of the LV/LV Bypass Transformers, the couplin g
circuit brea ker will be closed and

the full loa d will be fed from the

other LV/LV Bypass

Transformer.
The output circuit breakers that feed the different loads will be normally closed.

3.2.

Inverters 10BRU10 and 10BRU20

The inverters transform the direct cu rrent of the DC Distribution Board 10BUA10/10 BUA20 in
alternating current to feed the critical loads at 230 Vac.
In each inverter, there is a static transfer switch. The static transfer switch will be res ponsible
for switching the fed of the Uninterruptible LV Distribution Board 10BRA10/10BRA20 between
the inverter output or t he output o f the LV/LV Transformer Bypass in case

failure of th e

inverters.
The static transfer switches consist of a static switch that performs the transfer from one feed
to another in a short time. The static transfer switches have a manual actuation elements that
allow maintenance without interrupt the electric supply of the critical loads.
Each static transfer switch con sists of two thyristors group s in ant i-parallel that make the
function of static switch for alternating current. The first group is the static swit
connection from the respective Inverter and th

ch for the

e second group is the static switch for the

connection from the LV/LV Bypass Transformer.

The electro nic control analyzes bo th incomings, and it gives permission or not t

o drive a

group of thyristors or other, so in the output of the static transfer switch will obtain the voltage
from the Inverter or from the LV/LV Bypass Transformer.
The inverters shall have the following electrical characteristics:

5.4.3.2. Failure in the LV/LV Bypass Transformer
The failure in the LV/LV Bypass Tra nsformer 10BRT10 or 10BRT20 is sufficient that any of
the following conditions is fulfilled:

The failure of the in coming circuit breaker X XX of the LV/LV Bypa ss Transformer
implies a fed failure of the LV/LV Bypass Transformer.

In case of failure in the LV/LV Bypass Transformer will imply a failure in o utput voltage
of the LV/LV Bypass Transformer.

The failure of the output circuit breaker XXX of t he LV/LV Bypass Transformer implies
a fed failure in output voltage of the LV/LV Bypass Transformer.

In all cases, there will be a failure in the output voltage of the LV/LV Bypass Transf ormer and
input supply of the auxiliary network of the static transfer switch of the Inverters. In this case,
there will b e a fed fai

lure in the

correspon ding incomi ng circuit

breaker XXX of the

Uninterruptible LV Distribution Board 10BRA10/10BRA20. In this case, the half-busbar in fault

will be fed f rom the other incoming circuit brea ker by closi ng the coup ling cir cuit b reaker of
the Uninterruptible LV Distribution Board 10BRA10/10BRA20.
5.4.3.3. Failure in the Uninterruptible LV Distribution Board
The failure in the in

coming circuit breaker s to Unint erruptible L V Distribution Board

10BRA10/10BRA20 is sufficient that any of the following conditions is fulfilled:

The failure of the corre sponding In verter (static transfer switch) implies no voltage
upstream of incoming circuit brea

ker of the Uninterruptible LV Distribution Board

10BRA10/10BRA20, it will cause the failure in supply of the incoming circuit breaker.

The tripping of the protection relay of the incoming circuit breaker of the Uninterruptible
LV Distribution Board 10BRA10/10BRA20 will cause the opening of the circuit breaker.

In case of failure or trip of the incoming circuit breaker

XXX of the Uninterruptible LV

Distribution Board, the half-busbar in fault will be fed from the other incoming circuit breaker
by closing the coupling circuit
