Module 1 - Cell Structure

In this unit you will look at cells. You will look at the
organelles and structures within cells, as well as the
differences between different kinds of cells.
Module Objectives

To describe the structures of plant and animal cells, and identify

these structures under a microscope
To describe the functions of cell structures
To understand the differences between eukaryotes and
prokaryotes
To explain the terms tissue and organ with reference to squamous
and ciliated epithelia
To know the fluid mosaic model of a membrane and the roles of
membranes
To understand transport mechanisms in and out of cells

How I ACHIEVED my personal learning target:

The Light Microscope

Objective: To understand how a light microscope
works.
C: I can describe
how a light
microscope works
and explain how to
use one.

B: I can Explain the

advantages and
limitations of using a
light microscope

A: I can Explain how

the preparation of
specimens reduces
limitations

Animal, plant or both? (ALL)

Starter Task: Copy and complete the above table (all).

In pairs one person set up the light microscope and the other write a set of bullet
point instructions.

Objective: To understand how a light microscope works.

Objective: To understand how a light microscope works.

The history
1660s Robert Hooke - examined a thin slice
of cork and saw a network of tiny boxlike
compartments that reminded him of a honeycomb.
He called them cellulae - cells.

1700s Antonie van Leeuwenhoek - used

simple microscopes to make many observations of
the nature of cells.

Objective: To understand how a light microscope works.

Cell Theory (Weisman 1880):

The cell theory states that the basic unit of
structure and function of all living organism is
the cell.

All cells arise from pre-existing cells by cell

division (Virchovs theory of 1855).
The study of cells is known as cell biology.
The study of cells using light microscopes is know as cytology.
The cell is the basic unit of biology. Every organism either
consists of many cells (multicellular) or is itself a single cell (unicellular).

Objective: To understand how a light microscope works.

How do these images differ?

Objective: To understand how a light microscope works.

Magnification and resolution

Magnification is the number of times larger
an image is compared with the real size of an
object.
Magnification =
size of image
actual size of specimen
The ability to distinguish two objects close
together (clear) rather than see them as a
single object (blur) is called the resolving
power or resolution.

Objective: To understand how a light microscope works.

Same
magnification or
same resolution?

Resolution levels (smallest

distance apart can distinguish
two separate objects.

Human eye = 100um

Light Microscope = 200nm

Electron Microscope = 0.2 nm

Using pages 4 and 5 explain

how a light microscope works
and describe it advantages
and disadvantages.

2.

How are the specimens

prepared?
Why do we use stains?

What we can see under the light

microscope.
Make a list of the parts of
a cell you can see under
the light microscope.
