THE MAKING OF ARMILLA

Paris Lucke

INVISIBLE CITIES

This project was to look at 19 cities in the

book Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino where
he talks about all these places a famous
explorer has been (that in reality do not
exist). The task was to create at least 100
thumbnails on all the cities and then
choose one city to create concept art for.

I chose to do my concept art on the city

of Armilla (the forest of pipes) as that's
what seemed somewhat real to me.

INFLUENCE MAPS

FIRST THUMBNAILS

The initial idea was a city of pipes that people

lived in, it wasn't the best place for humans to
live due to constant floods, overflows etc.

After much thought I changed the idea to an

actual forest, humans wouldn't live here as it is
an abandoned city for whatever reason but all
that was left was plumbing, it would look like a
destroyed forest no life would be found there.

A Forest in the Mountains

Taking influence from surrealism and Legoland

Windsor when you drive there before you get
to the car park they have little sculptures on
the hills so took that idea, you see random bits
of plumbing before you reach Armilla - it will
look very surreal.

LOW ANGLE THUMBNAILS

Being in the actual city thinking about what it

might be like to be inside, would the pipes be
rusty? Is it dark? What wildlife is there? Natural
occurrences and their effect (like rain) etc.

INTERIOR THUMBNAILS
As the city has "no walls, no ceilings, no floors" it was
extremely difficult to create an interior so you could say
being under pipe trees inside the forest is classed as interior.

DEVELOPMENT

Playing around with colours

on photoshop using gradient
maps and blending modes I
was able to develop my
thumbnails to see what kind
of colour scheme goes with
the thumbnail.

At the time the idea was to

create a destroyed forest but
of metal rather than wood
but my idea changed again
from being a dirty
abandoned lonely place to
more of a eden like place.
