Proposal Workbook

Name: Saskia Asyari

Student ID: 19014105

For You, Thesis Warriors!

This workbook is meant for you, students who take Business Research Method
course. It is also designed for students who feel they could use additional help
with their undergraduate theses. This book constructs the understanding of the
unique process of doing research and also plays a role as a reminder that you are
now on your way to the final year of your study. Sometimes, it is because less of
awareness so that our work progress so slowly. Moreover, the purpose of this
workbook is to lead you to actively monitor the progress of your thesis and
advance it in a determined manner. The exercises will help you analyse your own
activities in the various phases of the thesis and also to divide your work into
various phases.
You are all unique with all your different strengths and experiences, which in a
way resulted in various ways of working on a thesis. You are the expert of your
life and your thesis. Hopefully this workbook will help prevent your thesis from
remaining incomplete and instead help it progress in the way you hope it to and
thus enable you to complete your degree.
Remember,
If you do good, good things will follow.

Sincerely,

Lecturer of the course

Chapter 1
Before the work begins: Basic questions
First of the first: Why should I write a thesis?
The deceptively easy answer to this question is thatbecause writing a thesis is
required of all Social Studies concentratorsyou have to write one. Indeed, it is a
must for you to write a thesis in order to follow the administrative rules of your
university which is the graduation requirement.
However, we hope you will not focus on this answer (that is, that the thesis is
required) as a reason to avoid thinking about the benefits and challenges of
thesis writing. Being clear on what you hope and expect from the process at the
outset may make it easier not only for you to begin the project well, but also for
you to finish it well. Over the course of the year that you work on your thesis, you
will invariably encounter at least a few significant challenges that may render the
entire process more difficult than you might have imagined. On the other hand,
the rewards of thesis writing can also be substantial!
One of the most frequent comments that we hear from students who have
graduated to the working world is that they value having had the opportunity as
an undergraduate to pursue in-depth the intellectual examination of an area of
personal and academic interest. These students look back on the long-term, indepth exploration of their thesis project as having provided a valuable
opportunity that, depending on their choice of profession, they may never have
the chance to repeat. Students remember, for example, the expertise they
developed on their topics; the seeming luxury of devoting substantial time to
exploring and thinking about an area of personal intellectual interest; and the
physical product, which more than any other single item symbolizes that they
accomplished something at their university.
Moreover, there are other, practical benefits that result from the thesis-writing
process. Writing 100 pages of coherent narrative text well is a learning process in
and of itself, providing valuable experience in conceptualizing, researching, and
finishing a long-term project. Not only is there work involved in planning a
suitable project (that is, one that is both realistic and interesting), but it also
takes significant work to complete the project successfully. In particular,
negotiating the various administrative and intellectual tasks involved with
conducting primary source research and analyzing the data you collect teaches
valuable research skills that are applicable to non-academic work environments
as well as to academic ones.
Do you agree with the stated reasons and explanations above? What is
your reason to write one?
Yes, I agree with the stated reasons and explanations above. Lets dont be nave
to ourselves, we all know that we need to make one in order to be capable of
graduating, but behind that straightforward reason theres also something Id like
to achieve during and after the process of making one. Id like to experience
focusing on one particular subject and exploring it deeper, so I can have a
broader idea of that particular subject and a new way of thinking because I
remember when my dad said that even once youre in workplace you will find out
that you barely use the subjects you learn back then in college, the subjects are
not the main point. The most important thing is how the years youve spent in

college mold your way of thinking and seeing things in multiple perspective, so
we can analyze better, optimize problem solving, and act properly towards
problems well face.

What is your expectation of your own thesis?

I hope that my thesis could open up my mind of what actually happen in my
surroundings and the world and I also hope that my thesis could give an impact in
my future or even others actions towards something resulting to a significant
impact in society.
What do you expect from Business Research Method course?
I wish it can help me to guide and prepare my thesis in my final year so I can do
well on my process making one and lead to an excellent result.
Your Current Condition
But before you proceed to the exercises, answer the questions below to find out
what stage of the thesis are you currently at. Which part of the mountain are you
currently climbing? Please circle the relevant stage in the figure on the next page.

Explain why you are at that particular stage. What are the reasons
behind it?
Im currently still trying to reach the surface of the ocean. Why? Because I feel
like this is a wake-up call for me to get out of my comfort zone and get ready to
face the thesis I have to do for my final year. Still plain and stiff but sure will give
my best effort to start a new journey and end it remarkably.

Which part of the mountain would you like to reach next and why?
I bet everyone wants to reach the top because who doesnt? But, theres no
shortcut in order to achieve that. I believe in phrase that said theres no elevator
to reach success, you have to take the stairs. So, its going to take us step by step
and for the closest period of time, I would like to at least reach the hillside of the
mountain so I might get a picture of what Im going to face for the next step to
reach the top.
What should you do in order to attain your goal?
I must be aware of my main goal. I have to be well prepared and have a clear
picture of what Im going to take up. Building a nice fundamental of both mentally

and physically. Observing and exploring potential subject Im going to focus on. It
doesnt have to work hard, just work smart. Arrange the schedule of the activities
and set a weekly goal. You may hesitate in the middle of the road while chasing a
big goal, therefore you need to divide your big goal to a smaller ones so youre
going to feel more motivated once you finished the small goals and ready to
move on to another goals. Last but not least, always make time for praying
because your success doesnt come by itself or just by yourself, theres always
people who support you and The One who can make anything possible.
This is important: Always Refer To Your Goal
When writing a thesis, it is important to set goals that can be realistically
achieved. Reaching the goals requires sacrifice, commitment and self-discipline.
Even sometimes, students can hardly advance on their thesis work because they
are off their original track, they are confused. That is why, always write down
your goals and define them in concrete terms. For example, if your goal is to
write an introduction, write down in detail:
How long should the introduction be?
What should the introduction contain?
How to achieve your goal?
If obstacles arise, how to proceed?
What is your desired deadline for achieving the goal?
If the goal you have set feels insurmountable or you fail, ask yourself what the
reasons behind this are. Have you perhaps set goals that are too difficult and
demanding? Could you divide the goal into smaller bits? Do you perhaps need to
change your way of thinking or acting? Learning a new attitude and ways of
thinking and acting is a major process and always requires self-discipline and
practice.
Now, please write down three main goals that you wish to achieve with your
thesis.
1. Introduction to topic. There will be literature review of relevant materials related
to topic, background of topic review, problem area, and proposed methodology.
Firstly, I need to make sure that the topic I picked is something Im interested in
thus I will not feel burdened with it yet still have the practical benefits to be
applied. I think it will make up from 5 10 pages and will hopefully 70% or more
completed in the end of 8th semester.
2. Analysis of data and conclusion. This part should be the prominent part of the
thesis because this part has the ability to help you advance an argument. The
conclusion can you handily pass if you master the contents. It will hopefully
completed before the mid of 9th semester.
3. Finish the thesis on-time and score excellent. This is definitely every college
students dream, but theres reason why its called dream, its because not
everyone can do that. It needs a high self-discipline, commitment, and real effort.
We may face hindrances during the process, but always remember that youre
bigger that your problem, so face it with keen, always remember your final goals
and pray harder.
List your thesis-related goals on a weekly basis for the next six weeks. Once the
first week has passed, write down the goals for the next week.

Week:
1. Exploring several subjects Im interested in. Collecting a reasonable amount of
information related to the topic.
2. Narrowing the topic and focusing more on what I want to say about the topic.
Go beyond overview and state an objective of the thesis.
3. Discovering literature review and finishing up introduction part
4. Revising introduction if needed and choosing the right methodology
5. Start approaching to collect data from surveys, scientific analysis, texts,
theoretical frameworks for analysis, and other resources
6. Organizing and inserting data into main contents, making several revisions as
needed, making some improvement and polishing the draft
I promise that I will follow my goals and targets.
