From the Rector

Dear Parishioners
What a day we had on November 20th. in Newcastle. The decade
service, packed with variety, and the lavish and delicious lunch in
the Parish Centre and the great number of willing volunteers all
helping, not only on the day, but also helping in the meticulous
planning which went into the occasion. These all came together to
make a memorable and happy occasion which I do hope those
present found enjoyable, informative and challenging and left us
with a more focused vision and planned direction for the future of
our parishes. Sincere thanks to the planning group headed up by
our very gifted administrator, Karen.
We have made a number of decisions which have financial
cost. The single largest amounts of money spent were to provide
the Parish Centre and this also meant building a new Rectory but
this cost is totally met by the sale of property. We now have a
facility that many parishes can only dream about and it has been
provided without any cost to the parishioners apart from the
massive amount of energy and time invested by members of the
building committee and the generosity of those who gave
substantial loans. The best way we can show our appreciation for
this wonderful facility is to be involved in whatever way we can. If
you have suggestions, feel you would like to be involved or can
volunteer in any way contact Karen or me. We look forward to the
future and seeing our vision realised and even greater things
happen.
The business of the Christmas period has already begun and I
encourage you to have a good look at the various events in PINS
and hope you can join with us on many occasions during this period
and especially as we meet to worship in thanksgiving for the birth
of a saviour.
This comes to you with sincere and very best Christmas wishes for
a happy and peaceful Christmas and God's blessing during 2017.

I would like to thank the Public Representatives who supported

What is Alpha?
Has life got meaning? Alpha sets out to explain
the basics of the Christian faith in its discussions of
such issues as the meaning of life, who is Jesus,
what did he teach, why did he die, whos the Holy
Spirit, how can we be filled with the Spirit, how
can we have assurance of salvation, and such
topics.
These subjects will be dealt with over a series of
ten weeks using an inspirational talk by the Rev
Nicky Gumbel via DVD. This leads on to a group
discussion and normally finishes with
refreshments.
This is now a world famous and widely used
course which has the backing of all the main
church leaders and is suitable for individuals at any
stage in their exploration of the Christian faith.

After waiting several years for the

opportunity to travel with William
to the Holy Land, we finally made it
in October this year! What a trip.
Many of you have already made the
journey and, of course, William has
been so many times, he must almost
be a local (indeed, he met people
he knew while out and about in
Jerusalem!).
It was such a wonderful holiday
with a lovely group of 18 others
(apart from our great leader William
and our superb guide Ofer) a nice
mix of new friends from all areas of
Ireland.
We started our journey with an
overnight in Netanya on the
Mediterranean, followed by a visit
to Caeserea to see the wonderful
Roman ruins showing Herods great
sense of self-importance, but also
his wonderful architecture (what is
left of it anyway). This visit was
capped by a performance by
William and Christy on the stage at
the amphitheatre not quite the
highlight of our trip, but memorable
all the same! From there, we
travelled to Mount Carmel with its
amazing views of the Plain of
Esdraelon and southern Galilee,
where we got our bearings for the
next few days.

16

We had plenty of time (3 full days)

in and around the Sea of Galilee to
follow in the footsteps of Jesus,
including a visit to the Golan
Heights, with its stunning scenery
and violent political history,
Nazareth (which helped us to
imagine life as it might have been
in Jesus time), Capernaum,
Magdala and Yardenit at the
mighty River Jordan (more a
stream now due to persistent
drought), where 3 of our group
renewed their baptismal vows with
William. The days were finished
off each evening with a swim in the
Sea of Galilee (some of us
anyway!). We were blown away by
the difference between Israel and
their neighbours, particularly Syria,
where we could hear shelling and
see some of the devastation caused
by war. I was particularly pleased
to see from Vodafone that I had
visited Syria, Lebanon and Jordan,
as well as Palestine and Israel
quite a trip for a visit to one
country!
On our way south and west, we
visited Qumran to see the location
of the Dead Sea Scrolls
(fascinating), we took a cable car to
Masada (scary), we swam in the
Dead Sea (hilarious), ran the gamut
of the crowds in Bethlehem
(chaotic), and walked our legs off in

Jerusalem (tiring). In between,

there were wonderful trips to synagogues, churches of all denominations, a bedouin camp (yes, there
was the obligatory camel ride!)
and other beautiful scenic spots to
sit and think, to pray or to just enjoy the view.

The combination of history, archaeology, architecture, politics,

and spirituality on this trip was so
well balanced that it catered to
each individuals hopes for their
journey.

We would recommend to you all

that, if you havent travelled with
