The document contains summaries of two math problems completed by Desiree Maldonado. The first problem involved finding the lengths of sides of a shape given the perimeter. Maldonado was able to derive an equation for x and solve to find the lengths as 12cm, 20cm, and 8cm. The second problem involved determining the number of different colored umbrellas on a beach given clues about quantities. Maldonado overcame initial confusion to develop a table-based approach to determine there were 15 red, 23 yellow, and 31 green umbrellas.

Problem Write Up #3
Problem Statement:
The problem we had to do was called Take a Guess. This is where we are given
a table that we have to fill in and try to come up with an equation for x to be able to
solve the problem. This problem was about knowing the perimeter and trying to find the
lengths of the sides. One guess is already done for us and we have to do the rest.

Strategy:
The first thing I did was filled in the rest of my guesses. The first guess was
given. After I finished filling in my guesses, I proceeded to fill in the X portion of the
diagram. This part was not too hard. I just had to go about looking at my guesses and
seeing what didnt change to be able to put it into an equation using x. After I figured out
the equation, you have to solve for x. Once you solve for x, you then go to the table and
put in the number the equation gave you for x to see if it works out. If it works out, which
for me it did, then you have your lengths for all sides for the problem.

Check

2(12)-4=20

12-4=8

12+20+8=40

40 = 40

Solution:
The solution I got was that the 1st length is 12cm, the second length is 20cm,
and the third length is 8cm. All of these add up to 40 cm which is the perimeter we were
given in the first place. I found this solution by solving for X in the equation and plugging
the answer into the table. From there I checked every column to see if it was right.
When I got to the perimeter, I added all of the lengths up together and got 40. So the
perimeter was 40cm with the lengths being 12cm, 20cm, and 8cm.
x+(2 x4 )+ x 4=40
4 x 8=40

Reflection:
I liked this problem because I enjoy guessing and then trying to find an equation
using x. It could be challenging at times, but this problem was just fun for me. Even

though this problem isnt that challenging for me, it is fun to do and I like when I know I
can get an answer to the problem. I selected this problem to show how much fun it
could be when doing problems like this one. I really enjoy guessing answers, finding an
equation, and then solving for x to get the solution. Overall, this problem is one of my
favorites even though it is not so challenging but just fun.

Problem Write-Up #5

Problem Statement:
The problem we had to do was about finding out what color umbrella was on the
beach. We knew that there were 15 red umbrellas but there are more green and yellow
umbrellas. We also knew that the difference between the red and yellow umbrellas is
equal to the difference between the green and yellow umbrellas. There are 69 umbrellas
all together on the beach. We had to find out how many green umbrellas there were on
the beach.
RY =GY ; where R=15 and

R+Y +G=69

Strategy:
The strategy I started with was trying to use one of the formulas I found to figure
out what the yellow and green umbrellas was. I kept trying the

RY =GY

equation

but I kept getting stuck and confused of why I kept getting 15 as the green when it is
supposed to be more than the red umbrellas. Then I thought about doing columns that I
would be able to just see what the difference is and then plugging in the numbers into

the other equation,

R+Y +G=69 . Once I did this, I was able to figure out what the

answer could be by using the guess and test method.

15+15+18=48
15+18+21=54

15+20+25=60

15+23+15=53
15+23+31=69

Solution:
The solution I got for this problem is there are 15 red, 23 yellow, and 31 green
umbrellas on the beach. When you add them all together you get 69. Using my table
and doing a guess and test for the yellow umbrellas, I was able to find the difference
between the red and yellow and then add/subtract the difference for yellow to be able to
get the 2 different answers for green that you just have to plug in to see if they work out.
With this method, I was able to come up with the answer.

15+23+15=53
15+23+31=69

There are 31 green umbrellas on the beach.

Reflection:

I liked this problem because it was difficult for me to come up with a way to use a
guess and test method to be able to get the answer. When I was able to figure out that I
had to do columns and just find the difference since they are equal made it easier for
me to figure out the answer. Before I figured that out, I was very frustrated and confused
about the problem. It was a difficult problem but I really enjoyed doing the problem
because I needed to really think outside the box and come up with a way to use a guess
and test method. This problem was challenging for me but overall, I liked this problem
because it was difficult but fun and challenging for me.
