Decedent's Home
The decedent was a single, 48 year old, White male who resided alone in a home in San Diego. On 12/12/16, his child's
mother became concerned after not being able to reach him by telephone and called her friend to go over to his house and
check on him. Her friend arrived at the decedent's residence and did not get a response at the front door. She then spoke to
the decedent's contractor who was at the residence finalizing construction on his pool and asked him to perform a welfare
check. The contractor entered the residence through the rear door and found blood spatter in the home. He then exited the
residence and 9-1-1 was called. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and decedent was found lying prone on the
floor just inside the office and his death was confirmed without medical interventions due to, what they observed to be,
obvious fatal trauma of the head.
Medical Examiners jurisdiction invoked according to the California Government Code 27491: Deaths due to known or
suspected as resulting in whole or in part from or related to accident or injury, either old or recent.

AUTOPSY REPORT

OPINION: According to the Investigator's Report and to San Diego Police detectives, the
decedent was a 48-year-old man whose medical history was significant for alcohol and
prescription drug abuse. He was last known to be alive on December 9, 2016, when he
was seen to exit an Uber ride in front of his residence, stumbling, and he stumbled into a
passerby walking her dog, and then fell face first into an ornamental palm tree. On the
morning of December 12, the mother of his child became concerned after she had been
unable to reach him by telephone. A friend went to the residence and got no response at
the door, and the friend asked a contractor that was at the residence to help check on him.
The contractor entered, saw blood in the residence, and exited, and 911 was called. Police
responded and the decedent was found prone on the floor at the edge of a home office,
and his death was confirmed. There was blood on the beds in two of the rooms, on a sofa
in the office, and on the floor in kitchen and dining areas.
An autopsy was performed and documented blunt force injuries, most of his face over the
prominences of the forehead, chin, and mouth; and one of his occipital scalp with
underlying skull fracture and contrecoup hemorrhages and contusions of the frontal and
temporal lobes of his brain, and subdural hemorrhage. He also had an abraded contusion
of his right lower back, and several other smaller body surface injuries. Microscopically, his
liver showed marked macro- and microvesicular steatosis (fatty change of the liver), and
his lungs showed changes consistent with terminal aspiration of stomach contents (without
acute aspiration pneumonia). Toxicological studies were positive for ethanol (0.20%,
peripheral blood and subdural blood; 0.26%, vitreous fluid), and amitriptyline (0.34 mg/L,
peripheral blood; <0.10 mg/L, subdural blood); and nortriptyline and nordiazepam were
also detected in his blood (in low or non-toxic concentrations).
Based on these findings and the history and circumstances of the death as currently
known, including the appearance of the death scene, it appears likely that the decedent fell
and struck his head on more than one occasion, apparently while intoxicated with alcohol;
resting on the beds and the sofa, until he fell or collapsed again. His immediate cause of
death was his head injuries (blood loss from the facial lacerations, as well as subdural
hemorrhage and cerebral contusions). His liver disease could reasonably have contributed
to a decreased ability to coagulate blood, and to increased bleeding from his injuries, and
alone (absent the head injuries) could have resulted in death. Therefore, the cause of
death is best listed as blunt force head trauma with hepatic steatosis listed as a
contributing condition, and the manner of death as accident.

SCENE NOTE
On the late afternoon of December 12, 2016, I was notified of a death in a residence in the
Point Loma area of the city of San Diego, and the police were requesting the eventual
presence of a pathologist. Several hours later I was notified that the police were ready,
and immediately went to the residence, arriving at 0054 hours on the morning of December
13. There I met with San Diego Police Detective Ryan Siemer, and other police personnel
were present. At 0105 hours we were joined by Medical Examiners Investigator Daniel
Garcia. The scene was a home in a residential area at 952 Cornish Drive in San Diego.
Inside the front door there was a landing with stairs leading to the main parts of the house.
The decedent was in an upper part of the house, on the floor adjacent to what resembled
most a home office, adjoining a dining area. There was puddled blood around his head,
and there were several other areas with blood smeared in other rooms - on the walls,
furniture, on a sofa (especially about one end of the sofa and a pillow on the sofa and its
cushions) in that office area. There was a nearby bedroom that had abundant blood on the
bed clothes and pillows. I also saw areas in the dining and kitchen area that had blood on
the floor (smeared and in puddles and drops) and I was shown where fragments of teeth
had been recovered earlier by the police. There was another downstairs bedroom that had
its bed clothes removed and they were on the floor next to the bed and there was also
blood on those.
The decedent was a Caucasian man, lying prone, resting on his right shoulder and right
hip. He was clothed in black long sleeve shirt, black jeans with a belt through the loops,
and striped socks, and there was blood soaked into his shirt, and transferred and soaked
on his jeans. The body was approximately the ambient temperature, had strong rigor
mortis, and barely blanching lividity that was consistent with its current position, and there
was a sulfur or egg-like odor upon moving the body. There were lacerations of his lips
and eyebrow areas, and dried and tacky blood on much of his face and scalp. A 0154
hours I released an analog wrist watch from the decedents wrist to the police department.
Protective bags were placed over the head, hands, and feet beginning at 0156 hours, and
the body was placed in a sheet and body bag and sealed with red tamperproof seal
number 2390798 at 0204 hours. I then briefly examined portions of the residence and left
shortly thereafter.
