Lotf Essay Mind

In Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses savagery as a theme to reveal the weaknesses, rebellion, and enemies of the boys. Golding shows the boys' weaknesses through characters like Piggy, who has physical limitations, and Simon, who has weak social skills. Events like the death of Simon demonstrate how the boys' weaknesses turn to savagery. Rebellion is revealed through the partition of Ralph and Jack's groups and their disagreements over hunting and the signal fire. Savagery also emerges from enemies, seen in the conflicts between Ralph and Jack's opposing perspectives and desires for power.

Urges of Savagery

Considering that if children are always born with innocence, how can they become
savagery? When they undergo and accumulate a lot of experiences, they are initiated to
maturity. Different experiences motivate underage boys in several ways. It depends on how
the situations affect their thought and expression. William Golding, an author of the book
Lord of the Flies, demonstrates the society in many aspects, especially savagery, through the
characteristics of British boys. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding(1954) uses savagery as
a theme to reveal weakness, rebellion and enemy of the boys.
Golding uses savagery as a theme to reveal weakness of the boys in Lord of the Flies.
Considering that if the boys live without any grownups on the abandoned island, they do not
have any right instructions for what they should do. Golding shows that the boys abilities
seem to be cruel, but they also imply their weakness. Each person has different weakness,
such as physical weakness, mental weakness, and weak sociability. For example, Piggy
shook his head I cant swim. I wasnt allowed. My asthma-(p.13). This quote can
demonstrate obviously that piggy has physical weakness, which is asthma. Even though he is
an intelligent boy, he is not accepted by others, especially his aunt, to do what he wants to
because of his physical weakness. Whereas, sometimes he has stronger mental than Ralph in
the extreme chaos. He can control his feelings and solve the problems well. These situations
can indicate that most of the people judge someone by his or her external appearances and
characteristics. In addition, Ralph says, Im frightened. Of us. I want to go home. Oh God, I
want to go home(p.157). Ralph realizes that he joins killing Simon. Ralph explodes his
feelings to Piggy when he cannot handle any problems else. Ralph has many duties to do
because he is elected to be a leader. Therefore, he cannot express his weakness to littluns who

Poonnapha Kittiratanaviwat
still worry about the beast. Nevertheless, Ralph is also a little boy who does not have enough
maturity to cope with all of the problems. Additionally, Jack and his hunters firstly do not
brave enough to hunt the pigs, but Jack does not want others to insult him. He uses his
weakness as a motivation to rise his confident and capabilities. The quote, Kill the pig. Cut
her throat. Spill her blood(p.69), can reflect upon the cruelty of the boys which means they
can kill living thing without guilty. Beside Ralph and Piggy, no one concerns about where
Simon is and how he is. Golding introduces Simons characteristics in the quote, Youd
better run off and play with others . . .You like Ralph a lot, dont you? And Piggy, and
Jack(p.143). Simon has weak sociability. The Lord of the Flies tells him that he ought to
better play and keep on the relationship with others. Moreover, the Lord of the flies
intimidates Simon that he cannot escape the Lord of the flies. It encourages the idea that the
Lord of the flies is just Simons weak side. Throughout the story, the weaknesses are changed
to be savageries. The death of Simon can reflect precisely how the weaknesses of the boys
becomes less, the savagery comes instead. Perhaps, there are some weaknesses which are
covered up by Jack and Ralph. In other words, some people indicate their ability and cruelty
in order to conceal their weaknesses.
In Goldings Lord of the Flies, Rebellion is revealed in savagerys theme.
Occasionally, disagreement can cause people to be savage. Small conflicts can be origin of
the violent problems. There is no society which is always peaceful and conformity. Different
people have different attitudes and perspectives. In Lord of the Flies, there are a lot of
arguments that are occurred by rebellion. Firstly, the boys usually follow Ralph who is
elected to be a leader because they have not been without their guardians or grownups before.
Even so, some of them rebel as Golding explains in the quote, Youre breaking the
rules!(p.91). In chapter 5, Jack does not believe the beast is real. He would like to prove

Poonnapha Kittiratanaviwat
that he is true and basically can be the leader instead of Ralph. He does not care about the
conch and the rules anymore. He tries to show his abilities which prove that he is better than
Ralph. In addition, the rebellion happens obviously in partition of the boys. Jack and Ralphs
groups are separated. Ralphs group emphasizes the smoke signal while Jacks group only
concerns about hunting pig. Both of them focus on different things. Golding shows the quote,
We can do without Jack Merridew(p.128), which means Ralph and Piggy begin to hunt
pigs by themselves and keep the smoke signal going for getting rescue. Jack founds his tribe
with no civilization. He comes to steal the fire from Ralphs platform to have a feast. When
Piggy figures out that Jack is stealing, Jack tries to change the issue by inviting members of
Ralph groups to join his tribe as shown in the quote, If you want to join my tribe come and
see us. Perhaps Ill let you join. Perhaps not.(p.140). He tries to grab the boys attention
from Ralphs side and to make them consider that they ought to rebel Ralph and rely on his
tribe because he can provide foods for them. Furthermore, the rebellion precisely occurs
when they have a feast and chanting, Kill the beast. Cut her throat. Spill her blood
(p.152), which is not as usual that the kids should do. They murder Simon because they think
it was the beastie. However, this situation can represent the non-civilization. The death of
Simon also comes from the reason that Simon does not join to play and stay with others as
much. He always rebels to go to his secret place alone and meets the Lord of the Flies. The
rebellion is one of the main reason of the conflicts occurred in the story. It can reflect the real
society that in every society, there should be both rebellion and conformity in order to
balance the situations. If there are too much either rebellion or conformity, the society will
have the conflicts and became uncivilized easily.
In Goldings Lord of the Flies, the savagery can happen in term of enemy. The enemy
is one of the main causes of savagery. The enemy can motivate people to be changed. Some

Poonnapha Kittiratanaviwat
people use these motivation in the efficient way, some are not. In Lord of the Flies, the story
expresses the enemies among people and their thought. The enemies from opposite group can
come from the disagreement, benefits, and powers. Throughout the story, there are several
sort of the enemies occurred. Between Jack and Ralph can demonstrate the enemy in Lord of
the Flies. The conflicts are started by two different attitudes. One group thinks that getting
rescue is the most important thing, but another group emphasizes food for survival as the
main objective. When there are too different groups in the same society, people need to adapt
themselves to live with each other. If not, they need to separate as golding explain, Jack
shouted above the noise. You go away, Ralph. You keep to your end. This its my end and my
tribe. You leave me alone.(p.176). This quote reflects the end of the relationship. Jack tries
to eliminate Ralph from his ways. At the beginning, Jack seems like he just envies Ralph
because he would like to be a leader, but this quote shows that it is more than jealous
feelings. Jack thinks that Ralph is his enemies. Additionally, the death of Simon can indicates
the enemy between the boys and the beast. The boys misunderstand that Simon is the beast.
They gather around him and chanting, Kill the beast. Cut her throat. Spill her blood(p.
152). They initially afraid of the beast, but they can kill the beast lastly. One of the reason
why they can do whatever they have not done before is their thought. Human thought is the
complicated. Nobody knows other thoughts. The thought can always change overtime. The
love, anger, greed, and jealousy are created by human thought. People cannot control what
they would feel and think. In Lord of the Flies, the darkness of the boys thought starts all of
the situations that occur, especially Simon, as expressed in the quote, This is ridiculous.
You know perfectly well youll only meet me down thereso dont try to escape!(p.143).
Simon cannot escape the feelings frightened of the Lord of the Flies. The Lord of the Flies is

Poonnapha Kittiratanaviwat
caused by his thought. Consequently, Every situation shows that the most dangerous enemies
of the people are not others, but they are themselves.
The symbolic of savagery is expressed as a theme through the reasonable events and
main characters to represent the weakness, rebellion and enemy in William Goldings Lord of
the Flies. According to the book Lord of the Flies, no one initiates to be savagery. The
problems that the boys face cause them to change their characteristics over time. They
become more cruel and uncivilized. They use their identical weaknesses to propel their
abilities and powers in different ways. The rebellion and enemy are the main causes of most
of the conflicts in the story. Lastly, the story ends with getting rescue by naval official which
Golding used to be during World War II. It can reflect that the society in Lord of the Flies can
demonstrate real societies. If the savagery of the boys is as the dystopia or darkness, the
civilization of naval officers demonstrate the utopia or a light which can raise the humanity of
the boys. Therefore, people should understand the differences among people in order to
adjust themselves and balance their extreme characteristics for making their society livable
and peaceful.
