Chapter 1 - Q uick Start Tips
1
1-1 Motion Tracker
This tool tracks moving objects in a

video and lets you add title text, or
an image/video clip that moves
with it. You can also add a mosaic
or spotlight effect that follows the
motion of the object.
The mosaic effect - blurs the

subjects face.
The spotlight effect - highlights the

subjects face.

1-2 Screen Recorder

This tool allows you to record your screen and the movement of your
mouse. When the recording is imported into CyberLink PowerDirector,
any mouse clicks become timeline markers for further editing.
There are three ways to open the Screen Recorder:
1. The Screen Recorder can be launched independently from
PowerDirector by double-clicking on its desktop shortcut that is

placed on your desktop after PowerDirector is installed.
2. Go the drop-down list of the PowerDirector plug-ins.

3. There is also a screen recorder button in the Capture module.
With the Screen Recorder, you can customize the area of your desktop
that you want to record and the animation color of the mouse clicks.

When the recording is complete, it is saved as a video file. The video file
can be used as a tutorial video or imported to PowerDirector for post-
production.

1-3 Action Camera Center

The Action Camera Center is recommended for videos that have a lot of
action and movement. This tool has all the features required for creating
and editing action videos, including quick fixes and powerful effects.
You can open the Action Camera Center by:

1. Selecting the video clip you want to edit in the library, clicking on the
plug-ins button, and then selecting the "Action Camera Center"
option.
2. Adding a video clip to the timeline, selecting it, and then click "Tools
> Action Camera Center".

The Action Camera Center includes the "Fix" and "Effect" tabs:
On the "Fix" tab, there is Lens Correction, Video Stabilizer, White

Balance, and Color Presets. The "Effect" tab lets you add replay and
speed effects, or add freeze frames.
1-4 Lens Correction

You can find this tool in the "Action Camera Center" or click on the "Fix/
Enhance" function button.
The camera lens profiles listed here include most of the popular video
cameras available on the market today. By selecting the maker and model
of your camera, you can fix fisheye distortions and unwanted vignettes,
automatically. You can also make adjustments manually to fine tune each
video clip.

1-5 Video Speed Designer

In PowerDirector 14 you can select a specific segment of your video and
adjust its speed in the Video Speed Designer . The option of easing in and
out is also provided to give your video a smoother transition from the
original speed to slow/fast motion.
The interface and functionality of the Video Speed Designer are quite
similar to those of the Action Camera Center. To provide consistent and
efficient learning experience for our users, we'll explain the video speed
adjustment feature in the Action Camera Center's chapter.

1-6 Express Project

Express projects offer pre-designed project templates for your videos and
photos. By placing your media clips in the media placeholders, you can
complete a video production very quickly.

There are two ways to access express projects:
1. Clicking on the "Express Projects" button when starting PowerDirector

1-7 Ease In/Out Setting for Title Text/PiP

Motion Keyframes
There is an ease in/out setting for keyframes in the Title Designer and PiP
Designer.
In the Title Designer and PiP Designer you can use "keyframes" at
different points of time to control the movement of an object (text or PiP
object). With the new ease in/out option, the added text/object will move
more smoothly.

Chapter 2 - Basic Features

2-1 Importing media files

CyberLink PowerDirector is very powerful, so how can a beginner quickly
learn how to produce a video? The steps shown in this chapter will teach
you how to use the features of PowerDirector. Follow along and you're
guaranteed to soon learn the basics of PowerDirector.
First, import the media files you want to use into PowerDirector.
2-1-1 Importing media files

1. Start PowerDirector, and click
on Full Feature Editor.
2. Click on and then select

Import a Media Folder.
Extra Information:
You may select Import Media
Files to import individual media
files into the media library.
3. Select the folder you want to
import, and then click on Select
Folder.

4. Click on to show or hide the

explorer view.
5. Go to Color Boards, and drag a

colored board onto the video track
of the editing timeline.
6. Switch back to Media Content,

drag your video onto the video
track 1 of the editing timeline, and
then place it next to the color
board.
2-1-2 Saving your project
1. Click on File > Save Project.
Tip:
You can quickly save a project by
clicking on <Save project>, or
pressing Ctrl+S on your keyboard.

2. Select the folder you wish to

save the project in, enter a project
name, and then click Save.
To avoid losing or damaging files by accident, remember to save your

project from time to time while editing your video production.
2-2 Video editing

If your video clips need to be edited, remember to edit them before adding
any text, effects, or music to them. Here's how to edit a video clip.
2-2-1 Splitting a video
1. Move the timeline slider to

where you wish to split the video
clip, and click on <Split
timeline> to split the video.
2. The video is split into two clips.
Extra Information:
Splitting a video on the editing
track will not affect the original
video file. The edited file will be
saved in the project.

2-3 Applying texts

When the video content is ready, you can add some title text to it. Text is
an important element in video productions. Showing text at the right place
and time will inform and keep your viewers interested.
2-3-1 The opening title

1. Click on to go to the Title
Room.
2. Drag the default title template

Extra Information:
The lower a track is in the editing timeline, the higher the content
displays in your video production. So the background should be on video
track 1 to avoid covering the added text.

the size of your text.

to put the text in the center of the

as 2 Color Gradient, and then
change the colors.

2-3-2 Adding a new text box
1. Click on <Insert title> and

then click in the preview window.
2. Enter some text and then apply

a default character preset.

have the same duration as the

2-4 The audio effects

Don't forget about the audio in your video production. The right
background music will greatly enhance a video, so let's add some music
to enrich yours.

2-4-1 Background music

1. Returen to the Media Room,
click on <Import Media> and
then select Import Media Files.
2. Select your preferred

background music, and then click
Open.
3. Drag the music file to any of the

audio tracks.
Extra Information:
If your project length is much
longer than the music file, you can
drag it onto an audio track multiple
times to extend the length of your
video production.

2-4-2 Music editing

To mute the audio in a video clip,
simply deselect the corresponding

2-5 Producing a video

Once you're done editing your video, you can produce it by outputting it as
a new video file and back up the project. Here's how.
2-5-1 Producing a video
1. Go to Produce.
2. Select Windows Media as the

file format.
3. Set the profile type as Windows

Media Video 9 FullHD
1920X1080/30p(10 Mbps), and
then click on to select a
different output folder.
Extra Information:
The profile type determines the
resolution of the produced video,
but the original video file needs to
have a high resolution to produce a
video with good image quality.

4. Select the output folder and then

click Save.
5. Click on to
produce your video.
6. Your video is being produced.
7. The production is done.

2-5-2 Packing project materials

When you save your project, you save a log of the edits you performed,
which are applied once you produced the video. The media files are not
saved in this project file. If you ever delete or misplace the media files, you
won't be able to open the saved project later. Therefore, it is always a
good idea to back up the media in your production accordingly.
1. Click on File > Pack Project

Materials.
2. Select Desktop and then click

Create Folder.
3. Name the folder is named "

Project Backup", and then double
click on the folder.

Tip:
For any media files that you
imported into the media room but
haven't used in your project yet,
you can select Include unused
clips to back them up as well.
5. Go to your desktop, and you will

see the Project Backup folder,
which has the project file and the
used materials (media files).
With the above-mentioned five steps, you will be able to produce a fun
video in no time.

1. Switch to the "Effect" tab.
2. Position the timeline slider at

the 00:00:03:03 mark, and then

The "Create Time Shift" button is
only available in the "Effect"
mode.

displays automatically.

you want this segment to repeat

of its original speed.

1. Move the timeline slider to the
end of the previous segment,
and the click on

shift segment to adjust its length.

To remove a time shift segment,
select it and then click on
<Remove the selected freeze

3-1-5 Motion Tracker

1. Import a video clip.

The Motion Tracker will follow the selected subject in the video
automatically. However, note that the if the pixels surrounding the
subject are similar to the background, the accuracy of the motion
tracking can be affected. If this occurs, click on "Stop", move the
tracker selection box back to the subject, and then click on "Track"
again.

3-1-6 Title Text

3-1-7 Adding a Tracker

You can add more than one tracker in a video clip. Here's how you can
place the tracker on the other subject's head, covering it with a picture that
moves with the subject.

3-2 Wedding
Most girls dream about their wedding day. They dream about the
ceremony, the gathering of their friends and family, and the new life they
have waiting for them. Not to be forgotten though, is the wedding video
that will forever be a treasured memento of the day. This chapter will
show you how to quickly create a wedding video with CyberLink
PowerDirector's Theme Designer. Just select the media you need, and
you'll be able to produce a beautiful video.
3-2-1 Sorting Media

After the wedding you will have a large amount of photos videos you will
want to include in the wedding video. When this media is imported into
PowerDirector, it's all mixed together in the media library. To save time
and effort, we suggest that you use tags to sort the media after it's
imported.
1. After opening PowerDirector,
click on <Display/hide
explorer view>.
2. Click on to add a new tag.
3. Enter "Groom's Side" as the

tag name.
4. Click "Import Media > Import a

Media Folder."

5. Select the folder to be

imported, and then click "Select
Folder."
6. The media is imported with

the "Groom's Side" tag.
7. Import and tag the rest of the

media the same way.
3-2-2 Opening Title Text

Wedding videos often start with some title text, so it's important to select
an appropriate title template. The Title Room of PowerDirector has
several templates you can use as the opening text for such videos, which
will save you some time.

1. Go to the Title Room, and

then drag your preferred
template onto editing track 1.
2. Double click the title template

clip.
3. Edit the text.
4. Change the font size to "36".
5. Click "Save".
6. The opening title text is

complete.
Tip:
You can drag on the edge of the
title text clip to adjust its length or
display time in the video.

3-2-3 Creating a Slideshow Video

When there's a large quantity of photos to be shown, you can create
different themed slideshows for each and every album to present the
photos differently.
1. Select the "Pre-wedding
photos" tag, and then drag all the
photos to editing track 1.
2. Select all the photos on editing

track 1, and then click the
"Slideshow" button.
3. Select the "Highlight" template,

and then click "Next".

4. Preview the slideshow with the

selected template.
5. Click "Customize" to modify the

cropping area on the photos.
Extra Information:
You can customize the focus area and the motion of the photos, but
not every template supports customization. You won't see the
"Customize" button if this feature isn't available.
6. Move the focus area box to a

differently location on the photo.
7. Go to another photo, and then

rezise the focus area.

8. Move the focus area, and then

click "OK".
9. If you're satisfied with the

slideshow preivew, click "Next."
10. Click on "Advanced editing" to

return to the PowerDirector
workspace.
11. Click "OK".

12. The completed slideshow is

placed in the timeline.
The Slideshow Creator applies a slideshow template to your photos, so

it's suggested that you use different templates on different groups of
photos to enrich the final slideshow video.
3-2-4 Editing Photos

You can use the "Fix/Enhance" feature to get rid of some flaws in your
photos before adding them to the slideshow. We'll demonstrate the
fisheye distortion and image cropping here.
Fisheye distortions can be used to emphasize the subject in a photo, and
image cropping lets you crop out unwanted portions of a photo.
Fisheye Distortion
1. Drag the photo you want do

edit to editing track 1, and then
click "Fix/Enhance".
Extra Information:
The Fix/Enhance menu will
display on the upper left corner.
You can click on to close it.

2. Select "Lens Correction", drag

the Fisheye distortion slider to
the left, and then click on to
close the panel.
Extra Information:

section will outline how to use this new tool, and all the other features, to
create instruction and tutorial videos.
3-5-1 Recording an Instructor Video
To overlay an instructor video with a PowerPoint slide as shown in the

example photo, the instructor's part needs to be recorded with a webcam,
and then imported into PowerDirector. PowerDirector has a built-in Screen
Recorder. As long as you have a webcam attached to the computer, you
can start recording directly.

3-5-7 Adding Subtitles to Videos

Adding subtitles to your instruction videos and tutorials can be helpful for
the viewers learning. In PowerDirector, adding subtitles is easy, and in
this section we'll show you how.
3-5-7-1 Adding Subtitles

You can save the script for the video in Notepad before hand, and then
import it to PowerDirector.
1. Right click on the desktop, and
then select "New > Text
Document".

subtitle text, click on the X in the
top right corner to close the
document.

4. Reopen the saved text file, and

then resize the Notepad window
and the PowerDirector window as
