CHAPTER-4

ANALYTICAL MODELING AND ANALYSIS

4.1 GENERAL

The main focus of this chapter is to study the seismic pounding between adjacent
buildings with different total heights and with varying separation distances.

The finite element analysis software ETABS Non-linear is utilized to create 3D model and run
the analysis. The software is able to predict the geometric non-linear behavior of space frames
under static or dynamic loadings, taking into account both geometric non-linearity and material
inelasticity. The software accepts and has the ability to perform Eigen values, non-linear static
pushover and non-linear dynamic analysis.

4.2 SELECTION OF BUILDINGS

4.2.1 Building geometry

Grade of concrete: M50

Grade of steel: Fe500

Seismic zone: II,III,IV

Type of soil: Medium

Live load = 3KN

Response reduction factor= 5

Important Factor= 1
Damping ratio= 5%

Soil type =II

Seismic zone= II,III,IV

Seismic Zone factor = 0.10,0.16,0.24

Time period Ta =0.09H/d1/2

Height of building (H)= 51.2m

Base dimension (D) = 52.7m in x axis

10.6m in y axis

maximum value must be taken. So 52.7m is our d

Time (Ta ) = 0.09x51.2/(52.71/2)

= 0.6347sec

Uniformly distributed load on walls

Base shear can be calculated manually by following expression from

IS1893:2002(part I)

VB=Ah X W

Where
Ah = Design horizontal acceleration spectrum Value

w = Seismic weight of the building

Ah= ZIsa/(2Rg)

z= zone factor

I = importance factor

R= response reduction factor

sa/g= Average response acceleration coefficient

At zone II

Ah=0.10x1x2.63/(2x5)

=0.0263

Seismic weight =127902.61 KN

Base shear = 0.0263x127902.61

= 3363.83KN

At zone III

Ah=0.16x1x2.63/(2x5)

=0.04208

Seismic weight =127902.61 KN

Base shear = 0.042x127902.61

= 5382.14 KN

At zone IV

Ah=0.24x1x2.63/(2x5)

=0.06312

Seismic weight =127902.61 KN

Base shear =0.06312x127902.61

= 8073.2KN

Seismic Weight:
The seismic weight of each floor is its full dead load and appropriate
amount of imposed load, While computing the seismic weight of each floor,
the weight of columns and walls in any storey shall be equally distributed
to the floors above and below the storey.
The seismic weight of the structure remains constant irrespective of zone
criteria.

seismic weight of whole structure is127902.61 KN

Storey drift : Storey drift is the drift of one level of a multi storey building relative to
the level below. Inter story drift is the difference between the roof and floor
displacements of any given story as the building sways during the earthquake,
normalized by the story height.

The storey drift of the structure is shown in the following tables under various
seismic zone criteria.
