Leadershiptrainingisafamiliaractivityinthemilitaryarena,andgoodleadershipiskeytothe
selectionofcandidatesatalllevelsfromJNCOs/juniorratesthroughtoseniorofficers.Manyofthe
valuesinherentingoodmilitaryleadershipalsoembraceChristianprinciples.Christianleadership
springsfromdiscipleship,isrootedincharacter,centredinservice,workingasateamandmustbe
empoweredanddirectedbytheHolySpirit.ThequalitiesofcharacterofaChristianleader,as
indicatedin1Timothy3:115andTitus1:59shouldbethecoreoftheNCOsorofficers
approachtoleadership:
Abovereproach(1Timothy3:2,Titus1:6).Someonewhoseexemplarylifeattractspeopleto
Jesus.Justthesortofpersonthatwaschosenbytheearlychurch(Acts6:3)peoplewhowereof
goodreputationandthereforetrustworthy.
Faithfultohiswife(1Timothy3:2,Titus1:6).Theemphasisisnotsomuchonwhetherthe
leaderismarriedorsinglebutwhetherhis/herrelationshipwiththeoppositesexisabovereproach.
ChristianleadershipiscostlyandnoChristianwhoaspirestoleadershipcanaffordtoheedworldly
ratherthanBiblicalattitudestosexandsexualrelationships.
Temperate(1Timothy3:2).Thisislessamatterofmoderationorlackofselfindulgencebut
morethatofhavingaclearperspective.WalkingintheLightofGod,ratherthanthedarknessof
men,givesawhollydifferentperspectiveonmatterswhichtotheworldareofvitalimportance,eg:
theChristianleadershouldbeledandinfluencedbythosethingsonwhichGodplaceshigh
priority.
Selfcontrolled(1Timothy3:2,3:8,Titus1:8).Prudenceisakeycharacteristicofmaturityandis
relatedtogoodjudgement,whichisatapremiuminallkindsofleadership.Prudencestartswitha
clearappreciationofone'sownworth,balancedbyahealthyrecognitionofone'spronenesstosin
andofone'scompletedependenceonAlmightyGod.
Respectable(1Timothy3:2).Literallyonewhosebehaviour,lifestyle,appearanceandattitudes
commandrespectevenfromthosewhodonotsharehis/herChristiancommitment.
Hospitable(1Timothy3:2,Titus1:8).Apracticalsphereinwhichtheloveoftheleaderis
demonstratedsacrificially.Itshouldberecognisedthatthisisnotlimitedtomarriedpeoplesingle
Christianscandemonstratepracticallovingcareinhospitalitybothtoothersinglesandtocouples.
Abletoteach(1Timothy3:2).Thereisastronglinkbetweenteachingandleading(1Timothy5:
17&1Thessalonians5:12whereindividuallyappliedandcorrectiveteachingisembracedin
admonishing).Christianleadersmustinvesttimeandenergyinlearningsothattheycanteach
learningisasmuchaheartactivityasaheadactivity!

Notaheavydrinker(1Timothy3:3,3:8,Titus1:7).Thisisnotacommandtototalabstinence
butratherthatnothingshouldhavethesortofholdonusthatalcoholhasforthedrunkardsports,
hobbies,ourworkeven,candemandandgraduallyachievetoohighaplaceinourtimeand
attention.
Gentle(1Timothy3:3,Titus1:8)."Blessedarethemeek(gentle)fortheyshallinherittheearth",
saysJesus(Matthew5:5).Aleaderismuchmoreeffective,eveninasecularcontext,whenhe/she
treatshis/hersubordinatesgentlyratherthanharshly.Gentlenessinspiresaffection,commitment
andawillingnesstobeled.
NotQuarrelsome(1Timothy3:3).Thisisvitaltocorporateleadership.Somewhoaresuccessful
leadersinprofessions,wheretheyalwayshavethefinalsay,reverttobeingdomineeringwhen
placedinateam.NoonehasamonopolyofGod'sknowledgeandwisdom.
Freefromtheloveofmoney(1Timothy3:3)."Whereyourtreasureis,therewillyourheartbe
also"(Matthew6:21).Whenmoney,possessions,promotion,publicrecognitionandtheliketieus
toourlifeonearth,wehavedisqualifiedourselvesfromleadershipofGod'speople.Ifanything
temptsustosay,"ComebackLordJesus,butnotjustyet",weshouldbeware.
Onewhomanageshisownhouseholdwell(1Timothy3:4,Titus1:6).Christianleadership,like
charity,beginsathome.Ifhe/sheisnotrespectedandfollowedinhis/herleadershipathome,how
canoneexpecthim/hertoleadGod'speople?Godplacesaveryhighpriorityonthisareaanditis
afrequentplaceofdifficultyforChristians.WehazardtheministryofanygroupofChristianswhen
weappointleaderswhoareintroubleintheirhomerelationships.
Notanewconvert(1Timothy3:6).Itwillbeapparentthatmostofthepreviousqualitiesof
characterarenotachievedovernight.Anewconvertisaspiritualbaby.Secularleadershipisnot
entrustedtoinfantsnorshouldspiritualleadership.Thereisaparticulartemptationtoelevate
someonetoChristianleadershipbecauseoftheirrankorprofessionalstatus.Iftheydonot
conformtotheabovecriteria,wehavenomandatetomakesuchanappointment.
Agoodreputationwiththoseoutside(1Timothy3:7).Thisisasignofsomeonewhose
Christianlifeisthoroughlyintegratedwithhis/hersociallife,his/herprofessionallife,his/her
financiallife,his/herdomesticlife,Lovingwhatisgood(Titus1:8)"As[aman]thinksinetc.Tolive
acompartmentedlifeistobetraydangerousimmaturity.Wecannotallbebrilliant,butwecanall
befaithful(1Corinthians4:2).
Notpursuingdishonestgain(1Timothy3:8,Titus1:7). Wearewarnedthatdishonestgain
ruinswholehouseholds(Titus1:1)anddishonestmoneydwindlesaway(Proverbs13:11).Weare
toensurethatallourfinancialdealingsareabovereproach.
Notquicktempered(Titus1:7)."ThefruitoftheSpiritis...patience.."(Galatians5:22)
peopleandsituationsthatconfronttheChristianleaderwillfrequentlyimposefrustration.Onlya
ChristlikeresponsewillachieveaChristlikeoutcome.
Notviolent(Titus1:7).Thisrefersnotonlytophysicalviolencebuttoverbalviolence(gossip,
bittercriticism,etc).Weareblessed,accordingtoJesus,whenpeoplemaltreatusforHissake
(Matthew5:11),sowehavenoneedtorespondaggressively.Ifwearetemptedtobepugnacious
foranyreason,itisalmostcertainlyasignofsininourselves.
Lovingwhatisgood(Titus1:8)."As[aman]thinksinhisheart,soishe(Proverbs23:7,New
LivingTranslation).ThisisaqualityofChristlikeness,notforgettingthattolovegoodistohate
evil.Aswemeditateuponthingsthataretrue,honourable,right,pure,ofgoodrepute,excellent,
andworthyofpraise(Philippians4:8),weimbibeintoourspiritsthatwhichisintunewiththeSpirit
ofGod.

Upright(Titus1:8).Thisispracticalrighteousness,which,becauseofitsholiness,givesa
fairness,anddiscernmentthatreflectsthemindofChrist(1Corinthians2:16).Itisvitalto
leadershipasisindicatedbythefailuredemonstratedin1Corinthians6:16.(fromtheNew
LivingTranslation).1 Whenoneofyouhasadisputewithanotherbeliever,howdareyoufilea
lawsuitandaskasecularcourttodecidethematterinsteadoftakingittootherbelievers! 2 Don't
yourealizethatsomedaywebelieverswilljudgetheworld?Andsinceyouaregoingtojudgethe
world,can'tyoudecideeventheselittlethingsamongyourselves?3 Don'tyourealizethatwewill
judgeangels?Soyoushouldsurelybeabletoresolveordinarydisputesinthislife.4 Ifyouhave
legaldisputesaboutsuchmatters,whygotooutsidejudgeswhoarenotrespectedbythechurch?

Iamsayingthistoshameyou.Isn'tthereanyoneinallthechurchwhoiswiseenoughtodecide
theseissues?6 Butinstead,onebelieversuesanotherrightinfrontofunbelievers!
Holy(Titus1:8).Therootofholinessisseparationforapurpose.Itisbothaseparationfromthe
worldandaseparationtoGod.Anotherwordisconsecration.Theholinessthatmarkedthelifeof
Jesus,who,livinginthemidstofsinners,wastotallyundefiled.Itisthatholinesswithoutwhichno
manwillseetheLord(Hebrews12:14).
Disciplined(Titus1:8).ThedisciplinedlifecalledforbytheBiblewillinvolveregularprayer,bible
study,exercise,healthyeatingandfasting.SuchgoodhabitsallowustofocusonGodratherthan
beingdrawnawaybyworldlyactivities.Weneedalwaystobeclearthatthisapproachisnota
meansofgainingcreditwithGod,butisaheartfeltexpressionofourdevotiontohim."Salvationis
notarewardforthegoodthingswehavedone,sononeofuscanboastaboutit.ForweareGod's
masterpiece.HehascreatedusanewinChristJesus,sowecandothegoodthingsheplanned
foruslongago."(Ephesians2:910).
