Shell Mexphalte C P2
Synthetic polymer modified high performance clear binder
Issued: October 2010

Description: Shell Mexphalte C P2 is a synthetic clear binder developed for use in the production
of coloured asphalt, it is a polymer modified offering a large plasticity range, ideal for use in high
performance asphalt. Shell Mexphalte C P2 is pigmentable to achieve a wide variety of colours
designed for durable pavement solutions.

This binder has been formulated for use in heavily trafficked areas and the binder has an
exceptionally large plasticity interval.

Recommendations

Shell Mexphalte C P2 is a polymer modified synthetic binder that needs some precautions for
storage and mixing as described below in this document.
The choice of raw materials and possibly percentage of pigment will be based on the final
desired colour. The use of 1% titanium oxide helps to obtain the natural colour of the aggregates.
To maintain a uniform shade for each project, it is advisable to work with a homogenised
product tank because slight variation in colour from one delivery to another may exist.
The colour of the asphalt could develop over time for the following reasons: the manufacturing
conditions at the mixing plant, climate condition during application and exposure to sunlight.
Differing UV light intensity may cause the asphalt to whiten at different rates, colour difference
will fade over time to become homogeneous after a few weeks.
The asphalt production and application equipment must first be cleaned to avoid traces of black
bitumen residues.
It is not recommend using recycled fines, especially in the case of a fuel burner.
Note: Wax based additives should not be used in combination with Shell Mexphalte CP2. Use
of these additives in combination with Shell Mexphalte CP2 may result in poor asphalt
behaviour.
More details and recommendations are available from the Shell Bitumen technical department.

Product availability
Shell Mexphalte C P2 can be delivered in bulk and drums, depending the availability.

Quality Assurance
Shell Bitumen has an established quality assurance management system, which has been
accredited with BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 certification (Certificate number FM 79367).
