Advantages of 11 kV alternators over LT (415 V) Alternators

1. Low current carrying capacity when compared with LT alternators, which

means easy to handle in case of long distances from generator to source of
usage.
2. Clean power as the HT is stepped downed to 415 thru transformer, which
avoids voltage drops.
3. In LT after a particular distance the voltage drop would be as high as 3%
depending on the distance. Conductor size has to be increased to overcome the
voltage drop, which means increase in cost.
4. Engine being a reciprocating machine, alternator being a rotating machine and
Transformer being a static machine the life of the transformer is higher
compared to alternator and engine.
5. Motor starting capability is better with HT machine as the voltage drop is
minimized.
6. The HT transformer can be charged directly in case of utility failures.
7. HT DG set gives a centralized power flow handling system. Easy for
operations.
8. Centralized Power System helps in reducing the redundancy requirement.
9. KA capacity for LT Power System is Huge and hence its s always advisable to
go with HT system in that scenario.

Disadvantage.
Cost of HT alternator compared to LT alternators, however the cost of LT power
cables would offset the savings made by installing LT DG sets. And also if multiple
LT DG sets are synchronized on a common bus the availability of 75/100 kA breakers
and the cost of breaker and copper bus bars would increase the cost more than the
investment on HT installation.

Conslusion.
The cost of LT power cables would offset the savings made by installing LT DG sets.
