Suggested Pattern of the Article Analysis

1. Note the author of the paper. If you know who he or she is, mention it in the
analysis. Note the original source of the article (a popular newspaper, a quality
paper, a magazine, a journal, etc.). The publication it appeared in can lend or
deny the material credibility.
2. Analyze the headline of the article. Mention the characteristic features of
headlines which can be traced in your article. The headline will tell you a lot
about the content of the article: the geographical focus, period, subject, and
sometimes something about the authors approach or interpretation. Dwell
upon the second heading (the lead), if any.
3. Determine the type of writing (descriptive, discursive, narrative) used in the
article.
4. State the subject-matter of your article. The author might be obvious or subtle
about it. Articles generally focus on a particular event, change, person,
phenomenon or idea.
5. Define what facts and type of reasoning (deductive or inductive) the author
uses to present his/her arguments.
6. Dwell on the aim of writing the article. Does it seem to be refuting someone
else's interpretation of some event or phenomenon? Is it offering new
information?
7. Analyze the formal organization of the text (an introduction, a main body,
a conclusion). Is the text coherent and cohesive? What are the meaning and
lexical links in it? What techniques for beginnings and endings does the author
use (addressing the reader directly, mentioning background information, asking
a rhetorical question, stating the reason for writing; making a thought-
provoking statement, making a prediction for the future, summarizing the main
opinion, making reference for further action)?
8. Dwell upon the general character of the text: the style with regard to the target
reader (formal, semi-formal, informal), the slant (dramatic, ironical, humorous,
tragic, etc.), forms of presentation (the authors narrative, reported speech,
direct speech). Define the stylistic peculiarities of the article: the authors
choice of the vocabulary (neutral, descriptive, emotional, formal,
conversational, technical), EM and SDs used in it.
9. What conclusions does the author arrive at?
10.What's your attitude to the problems brought up in the article? Do you
agree/disagree with the author? Express your own opinion.
