Schematics
A generalized diagram showing the overall scheme of things.

There are a variety of different schematics used in

automated production systems.

Schematic Detail
G A schematic shows general information about the
components in a system and their interconnectivity.

G They are functionally correct but not geometrically

correct.

G Schematics show the functional operation of all

components packaged as a single unit.
Hydraulic Schematic
(Schematic Drawing)

All parts on a schematic are shown using numbered

balloons which are listed in a parts list on the drawing.
Hydraulic Schematic
(Closeup)
Double Acting Cylinder Circuit
Check valves with metered flow
in one direction. Flow to tank
will be metered.

Double pilot operated check valve used

for holding under load.

Double Acting
Cylinder Circuit
4/3 solenoid operated directional
control valve with spring return to
center position. Center position drain
to tank.
Single Acting Cylinder Circuit

4/3 solenoid operated directional

control valve with spring return to
center position. Check valves in
center position and on tank ports.

Single Acting Cylinder

w/Load Return Metered flow on extend port.

Metered flow on retract port.

Single Acting Cylinder

w/Spring Return
Pump Circuit
Electrically operated pump
with pilot operated pressure
relief valve w/bypass to tank.
Pump unit equipped w/tank,
pressure relief valve, tank
screen, back-flow check valve.

Manually operated pump

sharing tank with electric pump
unit and equipped with a back-
flow check valve.

Shared filter on outlet port of

Dashed line indicates components both pumps.
come packaged in a single unit.
Pneumatic Circuit
120 psi max supply air,
filtered and regulated
to 60 psi.

4/2 solenoid operated

directional control
valve with spring
return. Cylinder will
extend when
energized.

Metered check valves

on control flow rate
during extend and
contract.
Assignment
Review the symbols contained in the last
couple of lectures. In the next lab, you will
have to develop a pneumatic schematic for the
gantry pick-n-place machine.
